Variable initiative kludge solutions?

Post by jtownsend2k »

Was wondering if there was a way to 'kludge' variable initiative. I like PBEM best, obviously, but I'd really enjoy PO play more without variable initiative. I don't like the computer getting it, and I don't like me getting it ;)

I know there isn't a switch (hopefully it will come someday) but are there any tricks as the game currently works to keep play vs. the PO rigourously sequential?

Maybe the lads would know if starting the game as hotseat and then setting the PO to play a side would work...
To repeat history in a game is to be predictable.

There are none that I know of, but you could give Wyatt's (Veers') suggestion a whirl. I would be interested in the results.

It appeared to work fine, thus giving me precisely what I wanted!

Tutorial (Korea '51) from first turn to glorious communist victory, no initiative flipping. Not an exhaustive test, but Korea always flipped iirc.

Cool. Thanks for the feedback!

But be aware that there are some scenarios (a couple of mine, for example) that need to be started in PO mode for the PO to work correctly.

Shoot. I wonder how many that is? Is it scenarios where the PO normally is P1 on the first turn, or is it subtler than that?

I just really have a severe hate on for variable initiative.

My two are:

Axis PO in "Campaign for North Africa 40-43": The game needs to start with the Axis-side PO-controlled so the events that cancel the Axis capture and holding requirements can trigger. If not canceled, the Axis PO will probably fail those requirements and lose by turn 25.

American PO in "Okinawa 1945": The game needs to start with the American-side PO-controlled to prevent the Carrier formations' "hold" orders from being canceled. Once canceled, the carriers will try to move under PO control - and that takes an eternity.
