Increasing 'other' skills

Post by Korgmeister »

Pardon if I rehash old ground here. If I have, hopefully someone can just point me to the thread where it was discussed.

But I've got a problem keeping jock's skill progression in check.

OK, you increase piloting skills by having the jock pull off risky maneuvers.
You increase weapon skills by hitting things (that sounds so deceptively easy).
You increase other skills by...errr?

OK, scanning other titans is one way, but sometime's there's no time to get an active scan, or maybe the other pilot's got a kickarse E-Warfare skill and/or an ECM system so it's just no good.

What are other ways, besides scanning of increasing 'other' type skills? (because those skills are so **** handy anyway)

To get OXPs you have to successfully pass 'other skills' skill checks, as I'm sure it is logical. So, if you go check what 'other skills' do, you'll find the answer to your question. Very simple.

Now, in the unlikely event you have not read the manual or the guide :) , here are a few tips.
Successful ejects
Successful repairs in battle
Successful recon movement
Successfully avoiding ammo explosions
And some other not so obvious cause you don't get the messages, like preventing shield overload, healing, scanner links, ... I guess.

And let's keep the recon "cheat" out of this please.

OK, I always try to keep scanner links open as often as possible to generate OXP (though this seems to generate a negligable amount). Most other skill checks you mention are very rare, or last resort things that happen when you get your butt handed to you on a silver platter. (which explains why I get more OXP when I lose)

Recon movement, though. Hmm, now that seems like a tasty way to generate OXP. Hmm, so the best skills to max out for more OXP would be Scanner, and then Recon, correct?
(Hmm, and Survival is good if you don't want to endlessly recruit rookies :()

As I mentioned, yes, I have read the manual, but I'm no cunning strategist. Hence, I go ask dumb newbie questions despite having played the bloody game for months, because 'basic' concepts just elude me.

If you want to try a training game where you can ask questions as situations present themselves it would be my pleasure to help :)

Locations a bit of a problem, though.

I'm in Australia, which is on the other side of the planet from you.

Also, my ICQ is being rather idiosyncratic and does not accept offline requests for authorisation.

Once I get a better computer (I'm using a 5 year old 166 running Win95 ATM) I can get Trillian and then everything will be sorted.

As it is, this old bucket can't handle a half decent instant messenger, and definately not while playing ToS, as it goes berzerk unless I play the DirectX version.
