One more point for all those playing PDU's you will have a lot more flexibility in pilot types than I do and you will need every one !!!.
 
I have probably between all bases another 500+ elite navy fighter pilots in Wildcats aboard my CVE's - in fact my CVE Groups are actually better than the CV ones !!!!
 
The ability to use these pilots in Hellcats will greatly aid in managing th ecrunch point.
 
At present I would kill for the ability to disband sqns to pool if I could disband 10 x 19 plane Wildcat groups and the 2 USN F6F - N Groups plus 50% of the surplus Helldiver/TBM Gps and perhaps all the CVR Hellcat Groups I could free up 1,000 plus trained pilots for my USN Fighter Sqns (i.e. nearly 18 months production !!!)

The raids on 3rd marines are pissing me off so a P38J gp will try to give them some cover as they are complaining about lack of aircover

Apart from that I am sending in a DD flotilla with more moving into place after fueling from AO's

I also am moving TG 58.2 and 58.3 close into Bonins with orders for naval attack I want to slow down his supplies and troops reinforcements the sweep will clear the way for Corsairs and Hellcats escorting Helldivers and TBM's

You have played this game very 'fairly' Andy (no one would argue that), but i'm worried that you are getting a little too much like the Brits in the Boer war (and no, i dont mean shooting your only commanders with any creativity...) - you have your 'rules of war' and are sticking to them, but the other side are using a different rule book. (ie. The Boers - fighting a guerilla war, refusing to wear silly red uniforms with big hats saying "shoot me, shoot me", refusing to stand in long lines taking turns to shoot at each other, etc, etc, etc).
 
I understand most of your 'rules' are an attempt to make the game engine work more realistically and historically, and that is fair enough, but you still need to allow yourself some flexibilty. I agree with setting CAP limits on CV TFs on normal operations (to get around a game engine problem), but what if you want to create a 'CAP trap' TF? It is certainly a historical possibility? A TF whose sole purpose is to destroy enemy AC? Why not load one 4 CV TF with 3 (or 4?) squadrons each of marine Corsairs? No, it did not happen historically, but this is not history! Historically japan did not control an industrial juggernaut of immense proportions! Historically Japan did not have the ability to produce 1000s more Aircraft than the USA. Even if japan had conquered india, and China, AND Australia and New Zealand they still would not have had that kind of industrial potential!! Historically the japs did not send their pilots on a 12 month training cicle through china, historically the USA never ran out of pilots or airframes after 1944, historically Britain would have sent ships to Australia if India was captured, historically if the japs had done as well as PzB has done in this game the Allies would have sent far more resources to the pacific, etc, etc, etc. This is not history, and if you try to stick too closely to what historically was or was not done you will lose.
 
You are playing well. I admire your 'ethics' in playing so fairly. But be flexible when necessary - rules to 'fix' game engine issues is one thing, rules to maintain historical accuracy is a totally different issue. Dont get the two confused!!

I guess this puts the kibosh into the plan to run the PI-Formosa gauntlet and get those CVs to Iwo.

Andy, where did the planes come from which hit your ships?
Close their airfields! You have the means, so be mean.
Don´t let plan yellow get all your interest and forget the rest of the theaters!
KB is near Japan, so you should get offensive in India. Use your LBA, you have lots of them.

Why can´t you free up Navy bomber pilots for your fighters?
I always thought there were two possibilities of "combining" two units. One would give aircraft and pilots to the second unit, the other one only the aircraft.
The second point would be to use Marine units on your carriers excessively. You have them, use them. The OP losses will be much lower than your A2A losse snow are. PzB called for it, screw him. He uses High flying kamis, you use a 6CV deathstar. The gloves are off now. YOu have to win a war. Get creative! Mine his ports, you loose subs in great numbers without achieving much. Use them differently then.
Bomb strategic, attack Bangkok and Saigon, burn those cities, this will cause damage to the industry, too.
Attack in the DEI, make use of your Airforce.
Go, get Colombo. It would be interesting to see what reinforcement will arrive there!
Withdrawl your 3rd Marine division, you will only loose men to Malaria and the enemy without achieving much. This was thought be be an distraction. If you want to loose men, try doing it while achieving something: Rangoon, Colombo, those are the places you should attack. Lure his LBA into battles with your carriers, where you have advantages.
I estimate, that you could liberate Ceylon with 4carriers, 8CA some destroyers and 4 divisions. Land them on a rail hex near the base and march them in. This would spare you the shock attack and reduce your losses while landing. There is no reason you have to stick your finger into a hornets nest.
On D day the Allies didn´t land in Cherbourgh harbor, they invaded little beaches and marched towards their targets. Do it like them.
YOu have lots of supplies, use them to build up the Aleutians as high as you can. Raids from there kill Japs as well as raids from other bases.
Make fightersweeps with your P51s when you have them. Use them against each and every airfield you can lay your hands on.

When you attack in the Marianas, use your BB to close those nasty airfields. Do recon where he has his planes, then bombard them with the strongest ships you have. Some "Bombardmend nukes" would help enormously. Just imagine destroying 300 Japanese planes in one bombardment run on two airfields each. This will break his LBA advantage.
Do not do the raids one after the bother, but you have to hit the places simultanously.
Additionally dont forget to protect your shipping lines. Hunt down his subs (you should use every searchplane/levelbomber in the rear are doing this), watchout for his carriers.
I am sure he was shocked to get almost in contact with the combined US fleet. He will not want to loose his fleet in one single battle. I think he will break his deathstar up into 3 or four small carrierforces to attack your lines of supply. Additionally he can keep some of them as a threat for your fleet.
Try to lure him to send one of those smaller TFs to attack a nice target and then sink his carriers.
Use small worthless TFs to make him use his kamikazes on those. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing loose him 100 elite Kamis in an attack on an empty AK and two DDs while your carriers are untouched. You can use CVEs for this job, too.

Frank is right make him bleed do not attack his bases with you CV based planes use your CV fighters for CAP  and escort attacks on Naval Targets where the CAP will be smaller[;)] don't fear the KB how many CV's PzB has now?? if he sorites better for you you will murder them... Attack on India is a great Idea maybe you will get lot's of British Reinforcement and push him out... he can't be strong everywhere[;)] I think the most crucial thing is to start Firebombing his City's in Japan... i bet he have large pool's of rep aircraft but when you destroy his factory's he will have to watch out on his losses... Are there some cut off Jap units near your bases  if so train your pilots the same way PzB dose.

You can only "combine" units of the same type aircraft so no, you can't disband a bomber unit into a fighter unit.

Apologies working late so no real commentary I sent in heavy airstrikes against Bonin - it cost me but it was worth it my logic is I want to send surface ships into Iwo but I am not willing to until I have both AF's hit hard and broken otherwise the sheer number of TF's will totally fragment my strikes and they will get torn apart.

The plan for tomorrow when I see the turn after I get home is to do the same to Iwo as I did to Bonin today taking the AF out of play for a day and then send in every surface ship I can to clean house in the harbour so every DD, CL, BB and CA I can spare will go in in 8 - 10 ship TF's in the mother of all surface battles

(The raids by DD's have been determining that there isnt a MF at Iwo it wasnt just suicide there was method to my madness as I would not send my battle line into a 5,000 mine trap ----- there appear to be no mines so lets get it on !!!!

I figure PZB will have split his fleet between Bonin and Iwo which should allow me to defeat him in detail.

I will answer other questions raised above when I get home but for the avoidance of doubt it is time to take on the IJN ship to ship Iowas, SODAK, NC's, Baltimores and Clevelends with hordes of Fletchers going in hard....

Of course all my ships need to be in strike range as there is no point in going in if they are not !!!!

Why can´t you free up Navy bomber pilots for your fighters?
I always thought there were two possibilities of "combining" two units. One would give aircraft and pilots to the second unit, the other one only the aircraft.

You can only "combine" units of the same type aircraft so no, you can't disband a bomber unit into a fighter unit.

But won´t the pilots who will not go to the other unit be redirected to the pool?
No, they won´t, I tried it out.
disband will give planes and pilots to the receiving unit
withdrawl will give only planes, but pilots are lost.

Sorry guys a 2nd all nighter at work I did the turn bleary eyed this morning so my judgement may have been flawed !!!
 
OK the plan of action
 
I was pleased with yesterdays action clearing out the Bonins is a good start to my plan.
 
I want to send in every naval unit I can find tomorrow so today its time to get cunning !!!!
 
The plan for today
 
Phase 1
 
All 6 Carrier TF's will move to 2 hexes of Iwo Jima - this is important because time to target helps with co ordinated strikes so the same range is essential.
 
I have then very carefully (I hope !!!) set all units to very specific orders
 
Navy Hellcats Escort and CAP
Navy Corsairs Sweep all of them 0% CAP 20,000 feet sweep
Marine Hellcat Nightfighter Sweep (expendable I have pilots and frames for these)
Navy Wildcats CAP and Escort (expendable pilots will up 30xp so be it)
 
The plan is I send in my most capable fighter (and the one I have reserves of) on a massed sweep of Iwo trying knock out as many of the CAP fighters as I can.
 
P51's from Marcus will sweep Bonin to try and keep there under control
 
Phase 2
 
CAP is weakened (I hope) all Navy Helldivers and TBM's on fleet and escort carriers are set to unrestriicted naval attack - yup PZB has hundreds of TF's in port and this will fragment my strike so I must clear CAP 1st otherwise my bombers will get wiped by Uber CAP. (as a precaution Hellcats are set5 to escort)
 
Phase 3
 
30 Subs are ordered  to the vicinity of Iwo including several in the hex itself
 
Phase 4
 
Surface TF's congregate 120 miles from Iwo getting ready for tommorow surface action in support of initial landings
 
Basically I hope that my Carriers will hit and attrit his forces before I send in the battle line tomorrow
 
This is important because its time to deal with all the navy units and transports ASW TF's in Bonins in general..

Buzzz my ethics are not al they appear - my stacking limits are to many folk gamey we each play to our own rules and stick to them - I wont ground attack train but I have no compunction putting 500 B24J's onto a non atoll lvl 5 AF.

Each person draws the line in different ways this just happens to be mine.

But I appreciate the sentiment

Frnak oof of Iwo planes are coming from Marianas and Japan - unfortuantely this is the price I pay for a hostile Marianas at my back.

But thats ok

Marine Units on Carriers are ok now we are in 45 they did operate that way so I feel no restrictions

I am getting an additional 24 - 48 planes per day as of tomorrow as the CVE Bridge from Midway is operational the first Marine F4U Sqn will transfer onto a carrier tomorrow there after I will have c 24 - 50 fresh fighter per day (Marien F4U1D's/ F6F N's mostly) until this fight is won I want to keep my carriers on location until the second wave arrives (currently just left Pearl with a further 4 Divs in case I need them)
 
Now I am going to crash and burn and sleep for 10 hours minimum !!!!

had this done to me also. Unfortunately even if you damage an airfield 100%, transports can still land there and offload troops. [&:] Made a house rule that as long as the AF was greater than 50% damage, than only paratroops, supplies, or troops brought in by patrol boats can be utilized.

The long and short of it is a reasonable day losses are within acceptable parameters the 1st marine F4U sqn is operational on board Enterprise with another and a F6F N ready to deploy tomoorow - from this point on I will be able to replace c 40 fighters a day via my CVE Bridge from Midway

Tomoorow I go after the AF again max effort then I will go after KB and the surface ships
