VSWG vs ctangus - Into the Heart of Darkness

Post by VSWG »

This is the Allied AAR for my PBEM against Chuck (ctangus). It's my second PBEM after the first one ended in Spring 1942 with an Allied victory (AAR here: tm.asp?m=1187748 ). Chuck is writing a Japanese AAR ( tm.asp?m=1352120 ), and we cannot read each others AAR. So post away if you got comments, questions, and (most importantly) advice!! [:)]

Settings:
 • WitP version 1.804
 • CHS 2.06, Scen 158 (extended map, NikMod, Soviet fleet available)
 • I've fixed a bug in this scenario regarding the TOE of US GS Eng Rgt so that they don't replace their engineers with combat engineers during the game, everything else is unaltered.
 • Turn cycle = 1 day
 • Allied sub doctrine = off
 • Japanese sub doctrine = off
 • fog of war = on
 • advanced weather = on
 • Allied damage control = on
 • historical 1st turn = off
 • player defined upgrades = on
 • vary setup = off
 • December 7 surprise = on
 • reinforcements = fixed
 • auto sub ops = off
 • facilities to expand at start = off
 • automatic air upgrades default = off
 • air and ground replacements default = off
House rules:

There are none. However this does not mean that this is a free-for-all, everything goes kind of game, to the contrary. Chuck and I are both interested in a fairly historical game. Having read each others AARs, we came to the conclusion that our styles so similar that we would try a game without dozens of house rules (which would be inevitably incomplete), except the following:
 • If you don't think a historical commander would have done it, don't do it in the game (El Cid's rule).
 • Don't do stuff you don't want your opponent to do (Kant's categorical imperative for wargamers [;)]).
 • Lets talk about all problems that might arise during this game
It's like the Pirates' Code - more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules. [;)] (I hope someone gets the reference)

We have nevertheless talked about the most controversial issues (turn 1 rules, PT boats, PDU limits, ...) beforehand, and found out that we're really in line with what we had in mind for this game. For instance, I never had the intention to upgrade as many 2Es as possible to 4E bombers, and Chuck said that he would do a conservative turn 1 - which he did. So now it's my turn to honor our agreement...

This AAR is closed as soon as Chuck posts a comment in here (BANZAI, or whatever...), and acknowledged the above stuff. Then I'll start posting the first screenshots...

BANZAI, or whatever!!!
So post away if you got comments, questions, and (most importantly) advice!!

You'll certainly need much advice against the wrath & strategic genius of Admiral Chuckamoto!!! [:'(]

There's a couple more points to the house rules/understandings.

- Nothing technically impossible (to the best of our knowledge). E.g. no upgrading sub-based Glens.

- Let's fight hard but also do our best to keep this a fun game for both.

- Los Angeles is absoultely off-limits to the Japanese. (I hate LA so Martin can keep it.) Seattle is a different story (Starbucks, yummm...)

This will be my last visit to this thread until sometime in 1947... [:)]

Okay, let's go!

Chuck manages to sink 4 US BB on Dec. 7th, and heavily damages the remaining 4!! [X(] [:(]

A little 'trick' to increase the number of repaired planes at Pearl Harbor: with such a high airfield damage a base repaires damaged planes at an abysmal rate - even small bases with few aviation support are faster. So I've loaded the 2 squadrons with the most damaged planes into AKs and dropped them off at Lahaina and Hilo. They repaired these squadrons completely within 3 days - much faster than Pearl Harbor, which manages to repair only 1-3 planes per squadron every turn! More air groups are already enroute to Lahaina and Hilo.

On Dec. 8th, Lexington and Enterprise went hunting for KB's oilers, but without luck (didn't change their orders on Dec. 7th, just increased speed to full speed). My carriers will now be reduced to transport duties - Enterprise and Saratoga from San Francisco, and Lexington from Pearl Harbor. No exciting Dec. '41 SoPac raid in this AAR, sorry! Instead, all carriers will be packed with fighters, the manual says 2x capacity is the maximum. This means, of course, that no missions may be flown from my carriers, and I'll accept that. In fact, this suits me well as I don't want any missions to be flown, as it would give away the position of my carriers. Should they meet a detachement of KB, they'll be sunk anyway, and against I-boats they will be covered by a strong ASW DD flotilla.

Image

KB retreated slowly to west after Dec. 7th, veeery slowly - perhaps to conceal the fact that some carriers have split off to raid the eastern Pacific? I'll run some smaller AK convoys to Pearl Harbor before sending out more important stuff. I expect KB to cover the invasion of Wake Island next turn, hopefully I can then discern how many carriers are in this TF.

More updates tomorrow.

SoPac:

Not much happened here, only 2 I-boats caused lots of trouble for some ships of the Pensacola Convoy, sinking 1 and damaging another AP near Canton Island (thankfully after they had unloaded their cargo)

Image

AKs and APs from Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific are converging on Pago Pago, where they will be sorted and formed into larger TFs heading for Panama or San Francisco. Fuel and supplies are underway from San Francisco and Pearl Harbor. Some CD units and Base Forces will be fast transported into this area using the cruisers and destroyers that aren't needed right now since I won't send my carriers into harm's way at the moment.

Nice to see the master of sexy looking AAR's is back. I also happen to like CT's style and have been reading his AAR too, but i'll not snitch on either of you [;)].

Heavy losses at PH for both sides BB's vs pilots. Nice idea of fixing up the battered a/c at PH . never even contemplated it .. thanks .

Good luck to you.

Thanks Rob! [:)] Terminus referred me to Alikchi's awesome Iron Storm AAR (Link), and I'll try to improve my style by incorporating some of his features, for instance adding real life photos of the ships and planes involved in major actions.
I also happen to like CT's style and have been reading his AAR too, but i'll not snitch on either of you .
His AAR against Patton was awesome, from an artistic as well as a strategic point of view. His defense of the DEI was one of the best I've seen on this forum so far. He will be a tough opponent.

SWPac:

Some major action here: CL Adelaide and CA Louisville managed to sneak undetected past the Japanese floatplane tenders Chuck uses to patrol the Solomon Sea and to harass the small Allied AKs in the area. They ambushed the Japanese invasion fleet at Kavieng, but CL Kashima bravely defended the transports. Upon their return to Rabaul they engaged Japanese cruisers which had orders to bombard Rabaul. The ensuing battle was fierce...

Image

Image

This was one amazing battle: all Japanese ships fired their torpedoes at Adelaide and Louisville without scoring a single hit! If there was an island behind my cruisers, Long Lances have sunk it! Then Adelaide and Louisville started shooting up the Japanese destroyers and even scored penetrating hits on all Jap. cruisers. Only as the distance closed to 6000 yards Aoba managed to land a penetrating hit on Louisville, and some Japanese DDs caused havoc on Adelaide's bridge (all other hits bounced). My task force quickly retreated, evading all further hits except another penetrating hit on Louisville by Kako.

I'm highly pleased with this battle, the damage to the Japanese ships must be worse than the combat report indicates, as three ships have split off from this TF. All Japanese cruisers have suffered penetrating hits and will need some yard time sooner or later. Adelaide and Louisville managed to heavily damage a Kashima, sink a MSW, shoot up a Jap. cruiser squadron and will live to fight another day!

Image

The now battle-hardened CA Louisville and CL Adelaide before the Battles of the Bismarck Sea.

Here are the day/night crew exp. before and after the battles:

CA Louisville: 72/38 -> 79/57
CL Adelaide: 70/40 -> 80/59

Nice.

The 7th Australian Brigade is on its way to Rabaul (I'm forward deploying this unit in order to throw a monkey wrench into Chuck's advance), and because of this battle the unit might actually make it to Rabaul. I might divert it to Port Moresby if it is spotted too early by the floatplane tenders, though. The transports are covered by CA Canberra, CL Perth and DD Le Triomphant. CL Leander, CL Achilles and CA Pensacola are also on their way to Rabaul.

There was an AAR many years ago littlejoe vs someone and he used a LOT of historical piccies. might be worth seeing if you can find it to pinch some of them [;)], actually afer a search i think its been deleted as it was rather old [;)]

Although it turned out well why mix the adelaide sp/22 knts with the much faster US one ? Actaully losing the adelaide is worth it to get a new one in 18 months[:D]

Looks nice...

Adelaide and Louisville started the day only three hexes away from Kavieng, and had to retire only three hexes to Rabaul, so I decided to join them to increase their punch.
Actaully losing the adelaide is worth it to get a new one in 18 months[:D]
True! [:D] But neither Chuck nor I am playing this PBEM with such a 'gamey' ([:'(][;)]) attitude... To be honest, I wish there would be a non-respawn version of CHS.

VSWG's China 101 (CHS)

Post by VSWG »

China:

A lot of people complain that China in CHS is a mess. It really is, but it can be a lot of fun, too! [8D] Maybe the following map can help, it displays the assault values of all Japanese and Chinese troops in all occupied hexes (I talked with Chuck about gaining this much information from the scenario files, and since he's an expert for China in CHS, he gave me permission collect the following data):

Image

Some general comments:

1. AV (assault value) isn't the problem of the Allied player in China - you outnumber your opponent heavily: 22,000 vs. 15,000!! [X(]

2. These AV values must be reduced for both sides: several Chinese Corps are static, and Japan has to garrison its cities. Substract several thousand AV for both sides. The situation becomes worse for the Japanese player if you consider that the Japanese troops in southern China have to conquer Hong Kong, and the troops in Shanghai are almost entirely units earmarked for other theaters - substract 1000 AV in Canton (at least until Hong Kong falls) and in Shanghai (unless your opponent decides to use these troops in China, which would be quite fortunate for you). A conservative estimate of all 'mobile' troops would be 17,000 vs 10,000 AV.

3. Of course AV isn't the whole deal: you're lacking in supplies, artillery, combat engineers, supplies, and engineers. Your air force is mediocre. Did I mention supplies?

4. Supplies. It's not as bad as many players think. You produce a considerable surplus even without the Burma road (unless the Japanese player bombs your entire industry to rubble, of course). Even with 'replacements on' you will produce several thousand supplies in excess per month - I'll add the exact numbers later.

5. Troop allocation: this is where it turns ugly for Japan. Few troops in central China, too many in northern China. On the Chinese side, you can throw approx. 10,000 AV against central China, while holding the line in the south and north.

And heres the plan: I'm going to be greedy, my aim is to conquer central China entirely - Operation Al-Andalus. Major obstacte is Hankow (Operation Granada), an urban hex in the middle of Japanese controlled central China. In order to conquer this hex, I have to pin down most Japanese troops at outlying cities, and then run the defenders out of supply (approx. 10,000 supply will be in the city when the siege begins). Hopefully the following screenshot (from Dec. 12th) isn't too overwhelming, lets start with the black lines, the supply paths that run into central China from the Japanese controlled coastline and its supply dumps:

Image

2 of the 4 supply paths are already cut (dotted lines): the road from Shanghai to Nanchang to the very south, and the road through Kaifeng to the north. In order to cut the last two supply lines I have to take (or at least occupy) Sinyang, and the Kiukiang/Anking area. Army Group D should be able to take Sinyang, but there's the threat of a counter-attack by Japanese forces from northern China. I still have some forces in reserve in northern China and I think I will be able to cause lots of trouble with them and the guerilla units along the roads, but I have to be careful nevertheless. Before Sinyang falls, the mighty but slow Army Group C has to enter the Hankow hex in order to cut off the retreat path to Hankow. Until Army Group C arrives at Hankow Army Group D will wait northeast of Sinyang.

Meanwhile, Army Group B and parts of Army Group A will (hopefully) co-ordinate their attacks across the river against Kiukiang. Army Group A has orders to keep as many troops as possible pinned down at Nanchang.

As soon as central China has been cut off from the coast and the area has been secured against incursions from eastern and northern China, my troops will have to run the defenders of Hankow out of supplies. Since I won't have air superiority (even though AVG will stay in China) I cannot keep the air field damaged and the fort levels down. I will have to deal with level 9 forts, and will have to rely on ground attacks to reduce the supply levels (the entire Chinese artillery corps is already on its way from Chunking). So it all boils down whether I can keep my troops in supply and all paths to Hankow shut down... To be honest I have no idea if this will work, but I guess it's worth a try.

To summarize:

I want: Hankow, the 'Jewel of central China' [;)]

I have to:
1. pin down all troops where they are ASAP
2. cut off central China from the coastline by taking Sinyang and Kiukiang
3. run Hankow out of supplies
4. storm Hankow
5. at the same time I have to defend the Honan area against a Japanese counter-attack from the north
6. and all this must be done without air support, without much supply, with inexperienced troops under bad generals (although I've heard that the supreme commander is a genius [:D] [;)])

*cue Mission Impossible soundtrack [:'(]

So far Chuck has made no blunder: he realized that he is heavily outnumbered in central China and pulled his troops from Ichang (an utterly unimportant city) into Hankow. He also wants to hold Nanchang though, and has send 2 divisons to this city. This plays into my hands, as I want as many troops as possible away from Hankow. He will be able to hold Nanchang, but maybe this spells doom for Japanese controlled central China...

*cue Darth Vader soundtrack

great stuff once again VSWG...will enjoy this AAR immensely.

Concerning your China Offensive, if its not too late, you can get the Philipinne Eng Rgt out of PI with Patrol Planes flying to Pakhoi. This may help with the fort levels you will be facing.

I'm working on some more screenshots for China, maybe they will help. Thanks for the good wishes, I can need some luck as I doubt that Chuck will make any errors here - he has proven that he's an expert for China in CHS.

Malaya

Post by VSWG »

Here's the screenshot for Dec. 7th in Malaya:

Image

A very conservative landing at Kota Bharu, but with overwhelming force and covered by 4 BBs. Paratroopers took Victoria Point and Tavoy on Dec. 7th! 2 AP and 1 AK had to be scuttled to avoid capture. The loss of Victoria Point and Tavoy this early not only means that the northern SLOC to Singapore is already closed, I will also have problems moving troops and materiel out of Rangoon.

However, no invasion of Kuching so far (Dec. 14th). I'm using the Dutch transports to fly the 22nd Indian Bde from Kuantan to Kuching, half of it already arrived. The base has also been mined, but 1 ML was lost to an I-boat on its return to Soerabaja. I'm going to fight for Kuching as hard as I can, maybe I can keep the southern SLOC to Singapore open for a while.

Kota Bharu fell on the 8th. Chuck poured lots of LCUs into Singora and Kota Bharu, and  I had to retreated from northern Malaya because two divisions pursued quickly along the eastern road. Alor Star fell undefened on Dec. 11th. I've pulled the RAF bombers out of Malaya and into reserver on Java/Borneo (you'll see them in action in the PI on the next screenshots), no need to waste them against the strong Zero CAP over Kota Bharu. The fighters stayed in Malaya though, and managed to evade combat until a sweep over Singapore downed 14 RAF Buffalos on the 14th. All Dutch fighters have gathered at Palembang and will join the RAF on Malaya sooner or later.

Another paradrop into Tuguegarao, the empty base fell immediatly. An incredible number of ships is unloading troops and supplies at the 4 bases in northern Luzon! Again very conservative, but it also minimized his losses, as I had no chance to disturb these strongly covered invasions. Only my PT boats managed to inflict some damage: DD Maikaze caught a fish at San Fernando on the 8th. All subsequent PT boat attacks were defeated by small Japanese SC TFs (3-4 destroyers) - only 3 PT boats survived.

So far Chuck has landed only on northern Luzon, but SigInt reports a division preparing for Naga so I've moved some troops to Lucena, Naga and Lingayen. Maybe I can ruin his day in southern Luzon. My top priority is to get all troops in good shape into Manila, but without retreating too early. I'm only going to fight seriously for Clark Field. Since Chuck hasn't moved out of northern Luzon yet most of my troops haven't moved - I don't want to create a vakuum by retreating too early.

Air Force: I've evacuated the B17s to the south, but kept the fighters in the area. I'll try to keep Manila open and minimize damage to port and airfield so that my engineers can expand the forts. Clark Field won't be repaired. AVG has joined USAFFE for now, until Operation Al-Andalus requires its assistance in China.

DEI

Post by VSWG »

The following screenshot deals with Mindanao and the eastern DEI, on Borneo Chuck conquered Miri on the 10th and Brunei on the 12th. He's ver y focused in his attacks.

Image

Force Z hasn't seen action yet, they are in reserve near Java. They won't engage until either Kuching, Balikpapan or Kendari are attacked - this is where I draw the line in the sand. These 3 bases will be reinforced as much as possible. For instance, an Aussie AIF bridage has already unloaded at Kendari. As long as Chuck doesn't know where PoW and Repulse are he will be forced to cover all further invasions heavily.

One Tip for the allied fighters in the DEI and mayala is use them as LRCAP over any evacuating shipping as this deters any unescorted nells etc. also makes them safe from sweeps at the same time. I'm sure you already know this however.

Vildebeest out of kuala lumpur can cause japan some scary moments and frankly with thier range its a good use of obsolete planes that cause a scare far in excess of thier real power.

have fun , looks like you have a large and vocal readership . goes to show that eye candy even turns our collective cynical heads [:D]

Task Force 97

Post by VSWG »

I lost almost all ships that are near the Chinese coast when the war started:

AK Taiping: sunk by TB near Hong Kong
AK Joan Moller: sunk by DB near Hong Kong
AK Hai Lee: sunk by DB near Hong Kong
AK Wawa: sunk by DB near Hong Kong
AK Soochow: sunk by DB near Formosa
AK Norse Carrier: sunk by TB near Iwo Jima
AK Ravnaas: sunk by TB near Iwo Jima
AK Morazan: sunk by TB near Okinawa
AK Chekiang: sunk by DB near Luzon
AK Kiangsu: sunk by DB near Luzon
AK Haraldsvang: sunk by DB near Hong Kong

AK Halldor:  escaped to PI, joined TF 97
AK Ben Nevis: escaped to PI, joined TF 97
AK Churruca: escaped to PI, joined TF 97

TK Ebonol: sunk by DB near Luzon

AP President Harrison: sunk by TB near Okinawa
AP Ariadne Moller: escaped to PI, joined TF 97

DD Scout: escaped to PI, joined TF 97
DD Tanet: escaped to PI, joined TF 97
DM Thracian: escaped to PI, joined TF 97

ML Redstart: sunk by DB near Hong Kong

PG Tutuila: sunk by Jap. destroyer near Luzon
PG Mindanao: sunk by Jap. destroyer near Luzon
PG Wake: sunk by TB near Chinese coast

PG Cicala: heavily damaged in Manila Harbor
PG Moth: heavily damaged in Manila Harbor

To bad, but I don't think anything can be done about it. For the Philippines I decided to merge all shipping (except the tiny Filipino AKs, which are hauling supplies to Manila) into a single, large convoy which would make the run south - against the conventional habit of sending everything in single ship TFs. This convoy - Task Force 97 - would be escorted by all available combat ships in the PI and covered by fighters. So far the result is amazing, TF 97 is at Tarakan and hasn't lost a single ship!

Image

4 AKs and a TK tried to flee east, towards Pearl Harbor, but since Boise drew Bonsai KB into this area they have been harassed by floatplanes and have now turned south, towards New Guinea. I should have merged them into TF 97.

Since this task force had also bombarded Cagayan twice during the previous days Asiatic Fleet HQ deemed it likely that this TF would now retreat to Palau to replenish ammo. It was decided to detach Task Force 97's escorts for a raid on the Japanese transports at Cagayan. However the Japanese SC TF did not retreat, and a fierce battle ensued, in which the Allied tincans held their own against a vastly superiour enemy:

To be honest, I wish there would be a non-respawn version of CHS.

Ron did a non-respawn version under CHS 2.06, which is available on Andrew's site. It's not at "real" non-respawn version however, in the sense that Ron's just included the historical ships over and above any respawns. The latter will then have to parked somewhere at the players discression.

Subsequently, Cid's discovered how to do a real respawn version. It's a pretty simple thing and it's a wonder really than nobody thought of it earlier. There a thread out there somewhere retelling the story :)

Basically certain ship class slots are hardcoded to respawn and any ships put into those slots will respawn as another ship defined by another set of hardcoded slots. Moving the relevant slots empty will disable respawn. If you feel uncertain about toying with the editor (don't blame you), drop me a mail before you start up your next game and I'll cut you a non-respawn version.
Where's the Any key?
