AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 09/14/43

Going backwards round the map as SEAC was the most interesting theater by far these 2 days.

SEAC

Japan keeps up its night bombing of andaman island and Sabang harbour facility. Quite unusually
they hit something today :-

Night Air attack on Sabang , at 19,41

Japanese aircraft
Ki-45 KAIa Nick x 11

Allied aircraft
Beaufighter VIF x 9

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-45 KAIa Nick: 1 destroyed, 5 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Beaufighter VIF: 2 damaged

Allied Ships
BB Warspite, Bomb hits 1 (have to re-paint her again[;)])

More normally allied night fighters (Beaus over Kuala and american P70's over Andaman) kill 0-2
and flak takes out another 1 for no results at all, at least he gets intel on this one.

Allied Dive bombers from Kuala also target the japanese defenders in Medan, Weather prevents
most ops but today we got some hits in

Day Air attack on 150th IJN Base Force, at 20,45

Allied aircraft
Spitfire Vb x 6
Vengeance I x 52

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
40 casualties reported

Day Air attack on 5th South Seas Det. , at 20,45

Beaufighter Mk 21 x 30
P-40B Tomahawk x 33

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
55 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
16 x Beaufighter Mk 21 bombing at 2000 feet
14 x Beaufighter Mk 21 bombing at 2000 feet
12 x Wellington III bombing at 11000 feet
4 x Liberator VI bombing at 11000 feet
9 x Liberator VI bombing at 11000 feet
4 x Liberator VI bombing at 11000 feet

Last raid was from Sabang and in total a good kill tally for the day.

Now back to the main event .. Both TF's had bombardment orders but bumped into one another
before either could shell the land forces. Allied Radar tracked the incoming japanese BUT in a quirk
of fate the skilled night fighting of the japanese still suprised the allies but no long range
Torpedo attack (thankfully).

In 3 rounds of combat varying from 4000 to 9000 yards the scary BB mushashi did little more than
ping the BB Valient with 6 inch shells and vica versa .. the Hyuga unfortunately slammed a 14 inch
shell into the CA Dorsetshire and the CA Chokai badly hurt the CA Cornwall with 3 8 inch shells
and a long lance to boot .. all allied 8 inch shells bounced off the japanese CA's but the
CL's did good work on the escorting DD's and it is with much shame that i reccomend the following
2 ships for thier major efforts

1st up and quite galling is the DD Le Triomphant who personally set fire to 3 japanese DD's
and 2nd ( and not galling at all), the DD Van Galen whom stayed behind and in the last few
seconds slammed a Torp into DD Kuri , sealing her fate.

As you can see the CA Cornwall (improbably captained by Cpt Manwaring) was too slow to get back
and got jumped by heavy air attack 60 miles away from home.

Day Air attack on TF at 21,45

Japanese aircraft
D3A Val x 25
B5N Kate x 45

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships

SANK

I'm guessing the godfrey was on watch and Pike was spilling tea over the radio at the time.
Meanwhile Fazier was proving to be the prophet of doom " We're all DOOMED "

Not a good exchange as all allied torpedo planes happily listened in on the radio but due to
a small localised shower (in the mess hall) refused to fly (BAH).. Looks like Major Magoo was
commander there today too.

Over in Burma the heavy bombers had a 2 day rest. tomorrow ,weather permitting, B17's will
finish off the last 50 resources in bangkok, while wellingtons and B25's visit local
airfields that are sending out recon planes right now.

also beaufighters will start harassing defensive bases along the malayan coast ( just to worry him)
might throw in a few Liberators later on to add a bit more realism.

I'm ordering a new attack on Medan by the indians for tomorrow too. todays hevy raids and the
lack of japanese naval support (for a few days) might tip it just ..

Having spent a while tinkering with troops and rangoon and holding the river line it appears
that they are rebuilding well e.g tanks upto 96-99% str , even the chinese are looking well
at post mid 95%, some individual british brigades are still badly battered however and i still
need to rotate a few back down before we open up a new assault, meanwhile i hope the japs are rotting in malarial jungle hexes while mine drink singapore slings (in anticipation) and
overload the Gin output of Rangoon.

China

after a lot of recon i expected better than this :-

Day Air attack on Changsha , at 47,36

Allied aircraft
P-40N Warhawk x 69
B-25J Mitchell x 45

No Allied losses

Resources hits 2

Pathetic ! .. day 2 hit 8 more , might as well keep it up now as no opposition sighted.
Meanwhile coastal B25s sink a japanese PC Off Formosa and SS Gunard had a field day

Sub attack at 46,45

Japanese Ships
AK Pacific Maru, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS Gurnard

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 46,45

Japanese Ships
AK Sydney Maru, Torpedo hits 2, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS Gurnard

SS Guardfish was hit again by helens while escaping the South china sea (she wont survive)
Time to abandon the formosan straights as its too dangerous.

SW Pacific

Tiem for some major reorganisation in this area. now Tassaforonga is in allid hands the
troops are ordered to follow the aussie tanks to lunga (should be slowest unit in jungle)
and engineers are being loaded at rennel island for deposition here and build it up a bit.
also Rennel has hogged so many transport ships i need to send 150 ! back to noumea as rear area
supply runners etc. (really wasnt paying attention here was i ?). The CV's have reached
Noumea , should I hit lunga for training ?? or too dodgy as im sure KB is in rabaul/truk
Catalina recon over Rabaul shows a lot of CA contacts in various TF's. have to refuel today
anyway so next turns decision.

also sending in the transports to PM to collect up the extra men for further duty after a
bit of a rest in australia. Gili Gili can how house 200 a/c and extra fighters and 40 odd
dauntless DB's with 14 torps bombers flown in. No more pointless japanese raids in the region
either. Still need more airfields in the forward areas though. Gili will also recieve a sub
tender for forward ops too (if she makes it).

Rest of the Pacific.

south pacific is being raped of combat units, not a single div will be left here (only one
left to collect). Lets hope japan does not realise how weak i'll be here for a while.
Plenty of air power to compensate though as the americans have many more planes than i can
find uses for right now.

Daily bombing on wake continues :-

Day Air attack on Wake Island , at 82,63

Allied aircraft
PB2Y Coronado x 1
B-24D Liberator x 39

No Allied losses

Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 27

Paltry attack as they were heavily fatigued, swopped over for the Pb4y's for the next 2-4 days.

Pearl Harbour is becoming swamped with units for the wake op and i'll probably have to divert some
AP's from north pac just to load up what i need for the 1st wave. Too many AP's in the coral sea
area and they are shunting men around anyway so will have to rely on AK's for the invasion
(which i'd prefer not to). However finally got V amp corps hq onto an AGC (amphibious command ship)
for the 1st time so we will have a new trick up our sleeve for this one. already prepping
for wake at 40 ish for now.

2nd Amphib hq being sent to NorPac for that op, but only one AGC and cant convert any.anyway I'd
have to conduct that one after midway anyway. Actually toying with the idea of doing the kurile op
1st to avoid the winter ( assuming i get the CV's there in time and i have adquate forces for
the attack). both are a bit iffy imo. when does wither set in ? nov i think?

anyway thats enough for today, spent a long time on this turn and still need another to
review all my subs (next turn).

bye for now

Joe is on a roll right now ,, great news.

another 2 days have passed and plenty of air activity.

Over the SEAC theatre allied planes hit the japanese defenders at medan hard killing 150
and must be disrupting the enemy badly. However the indian div has had it and performed
abysmally.

I checked morale --30% down , disruption at 30% too .. supplies in the green . must have been
an awful die roll[;)]. considering the adjusted defence leapt from 67 to 169 I must presume he's
been flying in men (despite the LR CAP thats catching a few transports daily).

Allied bomber command also struck on the 1st day (2nd washed out) and met heavy flak over

Been happening since jan 42, utter stalemate. china is however always supply short
even with the burma road never being closed and dakotas flying in stuff daily.I would hate
to have to try and organise china if burma ever fell (never happened so far).

Bangkok raid is pictured

RE: 43 - The Mouse bites back. Rob vs Littlejoe 43+

Post by Rob Brennan UK »

Well it appears that bangkok is syuck on 50 resources left and no amount of bombing will
drop it lower (im guessing recon is being inaccurate).

I'll have to be brief here as the combat report got corrupted somehow [&:]

Japan tried to stem the flood over bangkok without success. my airfield attack
netted good results too.

Oscar 2's tried to intercept but the escorting P40's chopped them down, netting 11 in a2a
and another 15 misc a/c on the runways with 50odd runway damage to boot. CR said another
50 (the last) resources have been neutralised. recon next turn might show something.

Over Medan in north sumatra joe set up a nice ambush for my bombers, his timing was perfect
as i had just upgraded the AVG to P40N and none were operational to escort the liberators
and wellingtons (only lost 3 but many damaged) LRCAP that was there to prevent transports
arriving didnt engage the japanese fighters so only limited escort came from kuala to cover
the dive bombers, downing a few zeros but the bombers did suffer. Nicely done Joe.

Over in newguinea the allied commander in PM decided to send the liberators unescorted to
rabaul (idiot). 11 downed for no hits on the ships in harbour, range reduced to stop this
from happening again.

Bit further east Munda caught several heavy bombardments from BB Idaho and company, unsuprisingly
the annoying jap raiders failed to get into the air after over 300 runway hits and 20 odd
a/c destroyed on the ground, c2000 casualties were reported too, so i suspect the service
personell here are in a right old mess. Transports unload engineers at tassafaronge to try and
get it to a level 3 (fighter and recon base) while the main army marches on lunga. This is
reported to have 48000 troops ! holy moley. very very glad i didnt land here now. Unless my men
arrive en mass i fear he will be able to send them packing piecemeal. But there is nothing i can do
about that. IF he does succeed I'll bypass and take tulagi to starve the buggers to death and live
without the airfield.

Thanks to helpful folks on the forum I have some idea that lunga has the equivalent of 3
divisions ! yikes .. will neeed to starve them out. Speaking of garrisons the next 2
proposed targets are looking good and bad

good = Wake 8000 men
bad = Parumahiro jima (kuriles) 20000 men ( more than about 2 divs can handle without
land based support. maybe hit an adjacent area(s). BUT it'll take time to build and my
CV's will be vulnerable .. Think we'll go for wake this autumn and leave the kuriles till
44.

apologies for the lack of detail, i've deleted the file and it 'should' get re-built when the
next turn runs.

time for me to go re-heat yesterdays curry for dinner (yum yum). [;)]

Well thats a lot of bombs used up (supply). just as well another 100,000 is unloading
at rennel (will last a good long time imo).

Over the water in new-guinea the japanese retreating from PM finally made it to buna and the
aussies will move next turn (darn missed by one day). bombers changed from the jungle kill
zone near GG to flattening any and all supply in buna so the aussies wont find a hard target
when they arrive in 30 odd days ( 2 artys and one tank unit following for extra oomph).

Piccie of todays action area.

almost forgot to mention the CV strike .. my bad

Multiple CV's launched against lungas airfields and port facilities.
Main target was the supply dumps.

Day Air attack on Lunga , at 67,97

142 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Airbase hits 14
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 49
Port hits 10
Port supply hits 8

9% supply scrapped in one attack, for 40000 men thats a sizeable chunk.
However i'm not hanging around as we need the CV's for Wake island, so back to
luganville and efate (to use up the fuel there). then onto pago and up to Pearl.
This will take some time but i still need more time to prepare for the landings
so it's not time wasted.

I was sorty of hopeing that japan might send down the CV's to contest but no-show
as i dont think he even detected me coming. FYI 3 operational CVE's have been left in
townsville to act as decoys and spoof his long range recon. Meanwhile the brit CV's
are heading to Perth from sydney (long trip given the map 'stretch' ).

Incidentally no sighting of japanese subs for a long long time , so no idea what he's doing
with that particular arm of the navy.

ok bye

PS

Just had a chat with Joe and they were trasporting the 90 naval infanty.
Only one AK arrived with men and only 12 Assault points survived, so
the unit was slaughtered .. hip hip hooray

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 09/22/43

Well 2 days of almost comlete inactivity (compared to normal ) So hopefully as a one off I'll concentrate of the lesser, but still on-going, activities elsewhere.

Lets start with the night attacks on Sabang and Andaman.

This is completely normal and a daily occurance with few allied kills and impotent japanese
bombing, they might be doing something so subtle( like increasing fatigue by 1 point) that its
untrackable. The brit squadron has 50 odd kills to its name and the americans only 20, when the
americans get P61-s i expect them to do better.

On spotting where the night time nicks over andaman were coming from, allied bomber command were
running out of higher prority targets and clobbered the field.

DD Anderson, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage no biggie.

As you can see , it was a quiet 2 days ( i've not doubled up the reports as much the same
happened day 2 ).

Ok time for a quick word about plans for the SW Pacific front for the near future.

1) small transports and barges to go to gili gili and then seed the surrounding bases (i.e re capture the empty ones ) with base forces and engineers for more fighter bases. Once that is achieved we will know if buna can fall to the aussies tramping over the kokoda trail (unlikely). So step 2 is to use GG as a launch point for amphib ops at buna and possibly Lae ( units already prepping before leaving Port moresby). Allied CVE's will lurk behind the NG mainland to try and look like fleet carriers without being in danger while the real air cover will come from land bases.

2) once lunga is secured ( tass is not good enough as a main airbase). time to ooze (there is a theme going on here i think) up where the japanese arent, unless significant bases are needed to support the advance the watchwords will be air supression and avoidance/surround/ignore.

Plans for central pacific

Assuming Wake goes well ( i'm not assuming anything at this point ). I'm open for suggestions as 2-3 options spring to mind

a) Marcus island
b) swing south to the marshall islands (kwaj etc. and then swoop on the Gilberts once they are out of supply and cut off.
c) above but ignore the gilberts utterly and drive west to the Palaus ? ( no map infront of me). I'll have to be careful with convoys getting whacked from japanese held bases if i do this but it'll save time.

In the North I'm not sure i'll even go ahead with the kurile invasion unless it's sensible to divert even more men up here , not to mention i'll need every CV i can scrape together here too.

In Burma Its really brute force approach firstly down the rail lines into thailand and malaya with a possible flanking landing IF i get stalled ( no idea on the possibility of this working). This is where i'd like nice counters with numbers printed on them to make combat odds more transparent rather than our currently extremely murky and arcane system [;)].

US and indian Paras will be used in sumatra and troops are also prepping for an invasion of
south sumatra ( will be extremely risky) while the north slowly gets absorbed using the trails
and possibly a fast landing after or even over medan (if needed once more men arrive).

This is just an example and about 3-4 raids (some smaller) are all adding up to disprupting the japanese. Unfortunately large stacks seem unusually resilient to air attack so not entirely sure
this is a wise appreach. any comments ?

Very odd day for the chinese airforce they are usually much mech better than this . PS the reason i fly at 6k and not skip bombing is to preserve morale and means i dont have to micro manage the air units , usually they do much better than this.

More engineers unload at tassaforonga and the LR CAP managed to fly this time. the amount of escort got some bombers through but no actual sinkings.

Nice going. I would vote for Marcus Island as for CenPac target! [;)] ...That would give you nice base just outside Japanese home islands. I doubt your opponent would be too pleased with that.

Naturally that would also force him to commit his naval forces too! If you are looking for an grand battle that is.

thanks Aztez , marcus would be a good target , wonder how well its garrisoned ? wish I had some of those floatplane subs in the allied fleet or even emilys ! Love those birds.

anyway another 2 days of much of a muchness, October has arrived by the way and churchill was rather annoyed i did'nt send him back a carrier and has sulked and refused political support for a while (-1000 PP). So no sacking bad commanders for me for a while, I think i've already weeded out the worst anyway.

It's drifting away from 2-1 . need more men. I'm going to do a seaborne op with another brigade in the near future , just need to re-jig the RN in colombo and load up the men in sabang. also strip
out some of the less useful a/c in sumatra and replace them with more fighters to cover the landings. I'll still keep the torp planes in place in case the IJN comes calling.

OK its the 1st of October .. Nighttime . Japanese ships sneaking down from rabaul come across some

Yeah. I miss decent recon planes too! [:(]

I doubt he has that much in Marcus Island... Allthough you can never be sure though. For one IF you go for it you need to grap the base quickly. I mean you need establish LBA airfield fast or you will be screwed! (KB will show up there and that is 99,99% guaranteed)

Basically this would need to be one huge amphibitious operation!

Hi Rob

Sorry not a turn.

Things seem to be going quite well. Glad you got 2 bomb hits on the Yamato. I find that flotation damage always repairs faster than sys hits.

Don`t foget about yhe monitor. Please have chat before you order anything.

Did England win ? Always want them to,unless playing Scotland. Divided loyalties.......-good way to be disappointed either way.

Anyway , cracker of a turn last night too much to write up then so after a wee delay we present the best october start i could have imagined (almost).

Chinas bombers target the heavy industry for a change, still rather poor so I've diverted them south
as they do seem to perform better against shipping, while still in range of some resource areas
should i feel inclined to switch targets. Wuuchow now has over 250 AV support so no problem
basinf a/c here. P40's boosted in case Japan decides to attack chinas airfields (hasnt happened

That is a good way to go ahead. Just remember that you do need to have LBA cover or Allied CV Fleet covering this!!! Joe will have his naval assets nearby!

Yup Aztez that combat scared me .. look at this ! ok its the worst damaged unit , but EEK !

As for CV cover/Air cover i'll be taking enough base units for Wake along with a bunch of seebees to get it operational.

Speaking of which the US CV's are near PH now, CVE/support ships just left pago after re-fueling and some AP's also heading up from there from being nicked from SW Pac command. 2 more new essex units will stand in for the lost (moved) UK CV's .. so iirc 7 CV's 4 CVL's total, ill do a full tally when all is set at PH (guessing about 2 weeks).

Meanwhile shiver at the poor lost chinese men !

I'm invading this island with SeeBee's with no combat power so cant take an empty island (sigh).
Also sendin men out from gili gili to other nearby allied held dots and bases to up the air
capacity for the region. also mounting up heavy inf and support to stop off at gili before
invading gasmata/buna and possibly Lae. all to be done while Wake keeps the japanese CV's
occupied. Basically ive moved up the schedule a LOT to co-incide with Wake. The Ex- PM divs
have been rested but not fully re-fitted and prepping will be at best 50 iirc.

Rest of the turn was unremarkable Although i did recon that base south of medan (forget the name )[&:] and it looks empty so stopping recon to not tip him off, Cats are doing a lot of recon round the area so he probably hasnt spotted it. Also loading up the US Paras at colombo for sabang
for the 1 SEAC airborne op. and NOT to be the last as I'll send down the indian Para unit when
transports arrive at madras. (on the way).

What wasnt un-remarkable was a 2-1 ratio at medan for both combat turns , time for another punt
and finally caught Japanese L3Y transports downing 7 supplying medan.

Ground combat at Medan

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 17070 troops, 159 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 312

Defending force 8228 troops, 7 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 146

Congratulations on sinking the Yamato! Nothing makes the heart rate go up as seeing an enemy capital ship in the crosshair of a sub.

Can you give us quick rundown on your forces (LCUs, ships, air groups) on Sumatra? As you know, I'm a big fan of this operation. [:)]

Okey dokey i'll do a list next turn i get , Joes having a busy week unfortunately. It isn't much compared to whats in burma though, mostly a weak indian div and assorted brigades and support sraff.

I want medan as an airbase where i can para drop further south and rapidly exploit the situation , as i only recently got the paras and i wanted them prepped they stay in malaria free india for a while , Actually the american paras i pre prepped for balikpapan before i transfered them to SEAC so they are 100% ready.

also available are 3 divs (infantry) in reserve in india for a possible malaya /south sumatra landing. Malaya i suspect might be too tough and he may have neglected south sumatra (although its a very risky invasion without LBA ).. Japan has a LOT of men stopping me on the thai border and the daft river crossing rules mean i cant send them back to rangoon as they'll just re-shock attack when i send them back [:@]

hopefully get a turn this evening.
