AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/07/42

And the slaughter continues. Allied losses are far heavier than the Japanese so far with almost 40 Allied ships being sunk since the turn of the month in return for only 4 Japanese ships ( mostly previously damaged AKs which succumbed to their wounds.

One of my surface combat TFs making for Toyohara encounters a fleeing transport. Within 3 days time I'll have a solid core of 2 BBs, 2 CAs, a CL and 3 or 4 DDs standing off Toyohara in a defensive role... I'll have to also give some thought to sending them in to bombard the airfield at Shikula... Decisions, decisions.

Two for 9. I certainly amn't winning here on pilots BUT the reason I am keeping this up is that I am expecting Allied fighters and other short-ranged strike aircraft to be flying into Shikula momentarily. Anything I can do to draw down the fighter numbers at this stage will make things much easier for me later on in the decisive area of the Sakhalins.

Hmm, the Mikes had little luck with the B-17s but I think most of that was due to the fact that they had low morale following their thrashing over Shikula earlier in the day. When fired on they broke off their attacks almost instantly, a sure sign of low morale.

Before I go on I'd like to draw attention to the picture above and the clouded in Japanese TF two hexes north of the AK Elna... Yes, that's KB [8|][8|][8|]. It is fogged in about 66% of the time in these northern latitudes. Still, I have sufficient launch platforms that, usually, SOMETHING launches and against the single ship TFs he is trying to have escape even my most incompetent pilots can generally do well.

The Allies have set up a base at Amchitka... I believe that this base is to be used to transfer fighters etc to Shikula via Petropavlovsk.

Unfortunately I was awaiting such a move and the CVL Shoho and a surface strike group are in the area and have finished refuelling. These ships are, most assuredly, toast.

A tough strike... It is obvious that I need to concentrate more on defending Toyohara and less on striking from it for the next short while. Fair enough, I'll make it a fighter-only base from tomorrow and that should do the trick.

Allied forces CAPTURE Yangku [Cent China] base !!!

Unfortunately there seems to have been some sort of code screw-up. Two turns before Yangku fell the number of resources there ( which was 900) JUMPED to 950 with over SIXTY-FOUR THOUSAND damaged resources. Not only is this weird BUT, more importantly, the addition of 950 resources to the Chinese supply lines completely undermines my entire strategy in China. This is a massive blow...

To help in finding the bug... The bug occurred when I deliberately reduced my garrison number to about 170 AV - well below the 400+ required - in order to ensure that the resources would be damaged prior to being captured by the Chinese. The next turn there were damaged resources - some 64,500 of them but the number of undamaged resources had climbed to 950. Crazy [X(] [X(]

I don't think the scale of Jagdfluger's losses are coming across very well at the moment. To put it in perspective he has lost 40 ships over the past 6 days with very few of those losses being in the first two days of the month and most coming over the past 4 days. On average, since our forces have closely engaged eachother he is losing approximately 8 ships per day, including priceless AOs, TKs etc... and all this with KB only flying missions a very limited number of missions and, even then, only striking a small TF. When KB gets seriously involved I am hoping for excellent results.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/08/42

Another day of extremely heavy losses. 140+ Allied planes and 90+ Japanese planes are destroyed. Fortunately for me half of my planes are obsolescent types destroyed on the ground while most of the rest were lost over my own bases. In reality I've lost no more than 20 pilots today which is the key. For the Allies their airframe number is the most important thing most of the time, for the Japanese it is their pilot numbers.

RE: Japan vs EVERYONE !!!

Post by Nemo121 »

My current reconnaissance of Shikula shows 26 enemy units bedding down there. There seem to be a LOT of enemy engineers at that base so I assume it will be building up pretty quickly. In another 2 or 3 days I should be able to convert a 30 bomber sentai to Me-264s and will then be able to launch a solid punch of 75+ Me-264s at Shikula every day. That should help keep them damped down.

One new division, another 200 engineers, another 200+ Aviation support, 20,000 tons of supplies and 30,000 tons of fuel and some more CD guns are unloading into Toyohara over the next few days. My battleline is almost fully re-organised, refuelled and re-provisioned and will be available to attack Shikula again in a few days time. Banzai !!!! [:D]

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/09/42

Another day of massive losses for both sides. 163 Allied planes, 56 Japanese planes and 7 enemy ships ( including 3 DMS) are destroyed. At the end of the day the entire Soviet fighter force defending Shikula has been cleared from the skies. It will be replaced but the number of planes available for continued replacement continues to fall. If things go according to plan Soon my bombers will be able to range over Shikula with impunity and pound it into the dust, freeing KB for operations elsewhere.

RE: Japan vs EVERYONE !!!

Post by Nemo121 »

Tomorrow the question becomes whether or not to send the battleline into Shikula to tackle the enemy DD TF, New Mexico and all those APs and AKs... If I send it in I could lose a BB and several DDs. If I hold back I should kill them when they try to run BUT they will all unload all they carry.

Hmm, choices, choices.

RE: Japan vs EVERYONE !!!

Post by Nemo121 »

Jagdfluger and I got talking about his losses vs mine... we didn't go into much detail since I think he really doesn't like to give any info away but it sparked my curiosity and so I did a full count of on-map planes, pools, reinforcements and production vs losses. I did this because I want to gauge the culmination point for the Soviet forces at Shikula.

I am delighted that the Soviets have finally stood and fought since once the stand and fight I can get at them and inflict massive losses ( in the past two days over 300 enemy planes have been destroyed).

So, what are the enemy losses and what do they tell us?

Fighters: Received/Lost/Left
I-16 Type 4: 252/9/243. 243 of these are left but as the Type 4 is so obsolete these are nothing but cannonfodder.
I 16 Type 24: 412/313/99. Out of a total of 412 Type24s only 99 still survive. Since I downed over 50 in just one day today those 99 fighters just simply aren't enough to guard Shikula effectively.
LaGG 3: 104/69/35. The LaGG 3 is a useful plane bu, again, with only 35 available for service the LaGG 3 just doesn't have the numbers to intervene long-term.
Yak 1: 69/36/33
MiG 3: 66/0/66

So, overall, the Soviets have 233 relatively front-line fighters available with a monthly replacement rate of 73. This is completely insufficient to fight a significant battle of attrition over Shikula without major American or British intervention.

So, what can they expect from the British and Americans? Well, not a lot actually, most of the better US fighters are being shredded by F2 Dainan Kokutai over Pearl Harbour.

F4F3: 313+what was already on the CVs/361/ -48 Essentially this means that all of the F4F3s on-map, on the CVs and arriving later have been destroyed.

F4F4: 101/48/53 - I believe that this is why I haven't seen the US CVs. With only 53 F4F4s unaccounted for the Americans don't have enough fighters to outfit their carriers... and thus those CVs are staying in port. If I do see the US CVs then I expect to see less than the maximum number and for them to be handled somewhat cautiously.

P-39D:274/204/70 - 70 P-39s left for combat over PH. With a dozen or more being destroyed every time I run into them over Pearl these P39s won't last long.

P-40B: 361/297/ 64 - 64 P40Bs left.

P40E: 221/172/49 - 49 P40 Es left,

Spitfires: 48/29/19. He's just started receiving about 20 more Spits per month.

Hurricanes: 184/49/135 - The key point here is that as far as I am aware only 1 Hurricane squadron has made it to India. The others are all trapped in Aden - blockaded by the CVA Yamato [:D]

All in all it looks to me as though only about 250 British and US fighters are available for combat with many of those being tied down in India and Hawaii. Overall it is looking damned good for the air war over Shikula.

In total 3 x Me-264s were downed today. Still, they managed to secure 8 supply hits which are, in the current context, priceless. In any case I am producing over 100 per month now so can lose 3 per day, for a short while, without any significant deterioration of my striking power. I have also saved up more than 30 produced Me-264s and am planning to convert my first 30-bomber group tomorrow. That ought to tempt the Allied fighters back into the air over Shikula.

BB New Mexico, PG Jumna and 6 merchants slip beneath the waves during the course of the day. This takes Allied shipping losses since the beginning of the month to 60 ships. US Navy shipping losses are running quite high and I just don't see how sufficient supplies can have been landed to survive a concentrated Japanese aerial assault on Shikula. In addition I also have a 1000 AV guard force in the Home Islands to repel airborne invaders and 1000 AV at Toyohara with another 900 AV due to arrive over the next 10 days.

Below you can see the situation in the Petropavlovsk, Etorofu Jima, Shikula triangle... 58 enemy ships are confirmed either spotted or docked in that area and I plan to collect most of them, pushing the number of Allied ships sunk well over 500.

The "battlefleet" may well be a TF of some subs (would make sense to station some old S-Class subs in Russia) or some AK's loaded with supplies...

Seems that I erred[8D].

Actually this would have been an excellent move by Jagdfluger in an ordinary game. But in this mod, with the enhanced Japanese capabilities, the delay caused by this stunt will probably prove too costly. But it remains a very interesting strategic decision to commit in Northern Japan that early.

Kereguelen,
Well I always find it interesting that people seem to have the idea that I won't pull back etc. Sure when I attack I try to hit as hard as possible but operational art is all about stringing together a pattern of acceptances and declinations of combat in order to gain advantage. That simply isn't possible if one isn't willing to pull back on occasion. In any case I plan to pull back from all but 5 Chinese cities which should settle the issue of whether or not the strategic withdrawal is within my remit for once and for all.

Do you mind me asking why you say both sides have lost too many ships? True the Allies have lost over 400 ( but they receive over 5,500 ships) and the Japanese have lost over 80 ( but they get almost 3,000). I think that the context is important insofar as those 80 ships hae bought me the DEI, Port Moresby, Guadalcanal, the Pacific including a foothold in Hawaii and India. As with all things the price can only be assessed as worthwhile or excessive when the return on this investment is taken into account. I truly am interested why you think 80 ships is too much to pay for those holdings + the horrific losses I've inflicted on his merchant and battle fleet. I may be missing something, to be honest though I think that once I pay the hundred ships for India, the DEI and the Pacific that my losses will tend to fall markedly as I'll be able to phase future advances such that they can be covered, in series, by KB.[/b]

Nemo, I don't mind ship losses if it is neccessary to bear them to achieve strategic goals in the game (but I think that taking India, the DEI etc. would have done Japan no good if there would have been no ships left afterwerds). But I was rather musing about the fact that losses in the game (both shipping and air losses) are extremely related to playing styles and cannot always blamed on game mechanics (actually this is more an A2A combat issue). When players complain about game mechanics, they tend to ignore this (not directed on you, just generally speaking). If I understand it correctly, Sid/El Cid (as the original designer of this scenario) tried to remodel plane performances - nevertheless, we see extreme losses here.

Kereguelen,

Re: enhanced Japan... Don't forget that Japan doesn't start off enhanced... It just has the potential to build better fighters, bombers etc as the war goes on. To be honest if I were going to do such an invasion as the Americans I would do it as early as possible before Japan had developed sufficient airfields in the north - this would pin such an attack down to some time prior to mid-March since after that time there would be a few Level 4 airfields in the area.

Still, assuming that I can reduce his supply levels there quickly I am just delighted to have roughly 3 divisions worth of US troops stuck in a base that requires resupply by sea [:D] and will, if evacuated, require another massive committment of merchant shipping.

As to DEI and India - I aree with you. On the other hand I've seen games where Japanese players have lost 100 ships long before the DEI is captured nevermind India, PM, Guadalcanal, Hilo etc. Still, one of the things that characterises different playing styles is that different players draw the line in different places when it comes to what is worth doing and what cost is worth it. FWIW I agree entirely regarding losses being very much a representation of play styles and that with aggressive play styles losses can be much higher than in a "normal game" even if the combat model is designed to reduce losses. What I will say is that in a stock PBEM game Allied A2A losses would be even higher and my naval losses would be even less as EOS and EA tend to feature more leakers which translates into fewer A2A losses and more hits on what they attack.

As to exactly what model is used for A2A... It is substantially the EOS A2A model but it has been tweaked to allow representation of the greater ranges of cannons vs MGs...

Pauk,

Thanks, it is nice to hear some feedback as opposed to playing in a vacuum. As to lasting into 1943... Well I hope it will but if some massive game balance issue comes up there is always the possibility that it will have to be fixed rather than continuing. Hopefully though we can play on as most of those things will balance out over time.

Oh and check this out for a stupid game design decision. If Allied paras capture a base with a load of resources, armament factories engine and airframe factories etc and the Japanese recapture them then the Japanese recapture the base the resources etc suffer a little damage ( fine so far) BUT the airframe and engine factories just disappear. They don't get damaged, not even 100% damaged. They just disappear entirely [8|]

Learning that little inconsistency in the game's design just cost me over 100 airframes and about 200 engines per month. Way to go Grigsby [8|]

We've also just had our first carrier exchange of the war in the Indian Ocean. It looks like my Yamato CVA TF is facing 2 to 3 British carriers escorting a major resupply convoy to Karachi. the first day's honours are pretty even. I managed to down 16 Albacores and about 7 or 8 escorting fighters and suffered no hits but my riposte was very weak ( my torpedo bombers refused to fly for some reason) and I only got two penetrating 250 Kg bomb hits on the Indomitable. It also looks like he has swapped out a lot of his Albacores to give himself more fighters to fly CAP and protect that convoy. Well we'll press him tomorrow and see how well he does on the back foot.

I'll post the updates later after the rugby.

Hi Nemo121,
It is already long time when I read the manual, but if I remember correctly, aircraft factories should be switched to vehicle factories when captured. Don´t you have there any vehicle factory that wasn´t be there before?

Thats a dumb decision and game design mechanic , i feel your pain on that one. Have to say I'd assume they would be halved/quartered and then damaged , wierd decision.

ahyhoo looking forward to the ireland game this afternoon. Playing France is a critical game for the 6 nations, after englands pathetic performance vs Italy yesterday I'm guessing the trophy will be between france and Ireland this year with hopefully Wales getting the wooden spoon.

Nice haul of allied troops in the north too ! [&o]
sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit :)

Jumper, I think you might be right. Still, given that the Allies only held the place for one day it seems like an idiotic design decision to me. Grigsby just didn't think through an awful lot of the permutations possible within the game. That much is obvious from playing it.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/12/42

Quite a quiet day mostly just featuring the Allies hitting some of my airfields again and destroying moreof the obsolescent training types. [>:] Jagdfluger is definitely avoiding bases at which Mikes are known to be operating. Sadly that just leaves him about 90% of my bases to hit.

Jagdfluger has created a line of Soviet subs on the way to Toyohara in order to interdict my supply lines. I believe, however, that he is far too late as I have over 800AV at the base, have almost finished completing a Level 4 airfield and have significant resupply on the way.

What is this you ask? Well, this is my decoy amphibious convoy off the western coast of India. I doubt it will fool Jagdfluger BUT I think that he'll have to honour it and since I'm going to try to make my big breakthrough in the middle of India in about 5 days time anything which prevents reinforcement flowing there for a few days is worth it.

I'd been trying to get them spotted for 3 days now... well, to get them spotted in a non-obvious manner.

I managed to write over the February 13th save. About the only thing to note was that I moved my CVs north again at Aden in order to cover the Aden/Karachi convoy route as I was expecting Jagdfluger to make a run for it from karachi. Before they could make it they were hit by 32 B-26s and a few Blenheims. This ended with 26 of the B-26s and a gaggle of Blenheims being downed on their approach to my CVs. The only damage tomy forces was a single heavy bomb hitting one of my AMCs. Elsewhere the usual tally of 6 Allied ships was sunk in the north-eastern Pacific. The most interesting thing was that I-165 managed to sink 2 of the ships fleeing from Shikula in a single day. Not bad at all.
