Tutorial Alternative

Battlefront features the power of battalion-level combat in some of this period's most bloody and intense conflicts: Saipan, Market Garden, Novorossisk, and Gazala. Players will have realistic control over their soldiers, with a tactical scale just large enough to make a telling difference in the strategic picture.

Tutorial Alternative

Having never played any of the DB games I am feeling quite lost with Battlefront. Would it be beneficial to download the BiN demo and play through the tutorial or would that just lead to more confusion?

NO! It is a different system, read the manual, play, browse the forums here and at SSG, read the manual...play etc. As a veteran of the DB series i have found that indeed, although similar, they play very differently. Saipan is a smaller scenario, although with the missing descriptions you may not know that[;)], so you may want to start there.

I concur. Try Saipan. If's its not clear what you need to do, I can put together a mini-tutorial for you to try.

Feeling a bit lost myself but reading the manual and playing 8 turns or so of Saipan and I am starting to get it. But, there is still a lot of information to learn and the manual could be a bit better (not having a dig because I know the time and effort it takes). After about turn 8, things came together fo rme and I started to see what a great game this is so really want to explore it more.

Is there any chance of some more experienced players starting a kind of newbies guide via the forums similar to what was done on the SZO forums for TAOWIII?

This would be easy enough (I think)... idea would be to build the discussion around a save game file or two. Players could download the save game file and then see how a number of features work by following the tutorial steps. Features could have some additional discussion beyond the tutorial actions.

Also, right now you can review the Gazala AAR. A bunch of the new features are discussed in it.

AAR_Link

Page 4 of the AAR has a good discussion of close combat actions and how the results are displayed.

Page 5 of the AAR shows the benefit of using engineer units (engineer shock factor) when attacking a strongpoint. It also shows the impact of air interdiction in terms of movement penalties (along with minefield movement penalties).

Pages 8, 11, & 12 of the AAR cover how defensive fire works (small blue die on a units defense info bar).
