Well, then it sounds like our original reference (http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_Radar_WWII.htm ) is perhaps incorrect...[8|]

It does. Hmmmmm....

Hi
I believe a small letter after the designation i.e SRa referes to an official modification carried out in the field - not a dockyard upgrade type modification

So that's what that penetration value is for.

I had thought that all radar in the game was treated as being generic and identical (it didn't matter what type of radar a unit was equipped with, it just mattered that it had radar of some kind).

Now that I know that not all radar is the same in game terms, the next question is "How does this penetration value come into play?". From what you've said, it is related to the minimum sized object that the radar can detect. But is a smaller value better (with a small value of the number indicating that small objects can be detected)? Or, is a larger value better (with a large value of the number indicating a "stronger" radar)?

Any clarification would be appreciated.

Also, where in the manual did you find this information? A couple of weeks ago, I did a search through the manual to find out the differences between the different types of radar. When the search didn't come up with anything helpful, I just assumed that the type of radar didn't matter. Any ideas as to where this is mentioned in the manual?

Hi

Only two values wrt penetration value 0 = surface search , 500 = air search

So all radar in the game is identical? (at least in terms of effectiveness?)

As long as you have surface radar, the type does not matter? You will detect surface ships equally well with all forms of surface radar? Does the number of surface radar-equipped ships influence the effectiveness of a TF when it comes to detecting an enemy TF?

Also, as long as a ship or LCU has an air search radar, its type does not matter? Incoming aircraft will be detected equally well with all forms of (and numbers of ships/LCU's equipped with) air search radar?

While I'm at it, where do "sound detectors" fit into this picture?

No - radars have different ranges and accuracies, iirc, so not all the same.

Okay, but where do you find this information in the game? I searched the manual and couldn't find squat. I searched the scenario/editor thread and found even less (0 matches to "radar" to be exact). Where is this darned information? [:@]

You can check the effectiveness and range of radar devices by using the editor that comes with the game. It is not in the manual.

As for searching the forum - I have rarely had success with the search engine. Sometimes it works but often it does not. It's been that way for a long time, unfortunately.

I assume this means checking the "devices" screen? Correct?

I did so over the weekend and found this moderately helpful.

This screen, however, did not indicate which radars were surface search and which were air search. I made the (probably not good) assumption that the radars with the greater ranges were the air search ones and those with the shorter ranges were the surface search ones.

Aside from using this questionable assumption, I couldn't find anything to definitely identify the radar types. Is there any place the editor specifically indicates surface search or air search capabilities? If anyone can point this out, I'd be very thankful.

Air Search Radar has a Penetration of 500, Surface Search Radar a Penetration of 0; that's how you tell them apart.
