problem starting starshatter

I installed starshatter the gathering storm and when I play the game, w black window comes up then goes away and nothing else happens. Any idea how to get the game to work?

I patched it to v5.01.........since then my shortcuts don't work to start the game. Also when i go to programs>starshatter>starshater(gathering storms Game menu) or Quickstart............nothing.

I need to go to the matrix Folder>go to Starshatter folder>click on Stars.exe.................and my game runs.

I'm on windows XP.Have I have an AMD Athlon 64 processor 3500+ 2.19 GHz......1gig of Ram

I tried going to the matrix game folder and the same thing happens, a black window pops up then the game shuts down. I'm on xp and have an nvidia geforce mx/mx 400 graphics card, but thats pretty much all I know because I bought the computer from a friend. I dont know the processor but I've run games built for just running xp with more requirements and they seem to work just fine.
