When I hit the Smolensk line the soviets were 2 deep and everytime I attacked and got a hex I had a division go to at least half strength. Since I couldn't attack across the entire front it forced me to focus my attacks thus allowing Larry to dig in with more divs. Same story at Leningrad, I didn't get across the Luga line fast enough and he dug in. On both of these fronts my inf divs were probably at 55% inf squad average.
You kept fruitlessly pushing far too long in these sectors while you were developing a breakout in the south. You should have rested the tired divisions and railed fresh ones to the areas east of the Dnepr. All that back and forth in the Smolensk area merely served to increase the Soviet material superiority over you. It's hard to keep sight of the strategic vision in this scenario, but if you can realise that units would be more valuable 200 hexes away than where they are, you can do a lot.
I see the situation now is if the Soviets want me out of the country they will have to attack. Last turn I think he had at least 3 divs evaporate while attacking.
The fact is this just doesn't matter. He can afford to lose this stuff. I suppose the one good thing here is that you've realised that you're not going to be able to pull a miraculous offensive out of thin air in 1942. That's a start.
