Vista PC user looking to join beta?

Post by wfzimmerman »

Hi,

I recently moved to a new home which had two effectes

1) I was reunited with my collection of Napoleonic history
2) I am about to purchase a Vista Premium PC (with Aero)

This made me think it might be a good time to join the Empire in Arms beta. can someone help me?

I have been a diligent member of the World In Flames beta team since startup.

Best,

Fred Z

Now that is a sneaky way to become a beta tester. [;)]

If you rush out and buy Vista, even with its Direct X, and some of your games do not run well, it should not be a surprise.

Wait a year, then try Vista...if it is not a flop like ME.

Here is a link to a site that is keeping track of what works and what does not.

Attack of the Show also recommends a wait and see attitude on Vista.

Definitely wait on Vista. My buddy works on the Geek Squad and tested it on his test computer and found that most drivers and software are not compatible. Give it time for the other companies to catch up with Microsoft. Hopefully it won't go the way of Windows Millenium[8|]

Fortunately, I have minimal installed base of games (just CWIF and HexWar), so Vista's teething pains shouldn't bother me too much (he writes bravely, little knowing the agony he is about to endure).

My Dual Core with 2 GB RAM and 20" widescreen ultrasharp shipped yesterday and should arrive tomorrow.

I hope this is a sneaky enough way to become a beta tester... there can't be too many people in the community with brand-new Vista Aero machines... please, someone, invite me! ;-)

I have installed Vista and installed all of the following games which work without any problems. I did have trouble installing a couple of them but a quick search in Google solved most of those issues:

Age of Empires III
Age of Empires III Warchiefs
Age of Mythology
Age of Wonder II
Age of Wonders Shadow Magic
Operational Art of War III
Arx Fatalis
Rome Total War
Rome Total War Barbarian Invasion
Battle of Britain II
Battlefront
Battles in Italy
Birth of America
Ceasar III
Championship Manager 4
Chessmaster 10th Edition
Civilization 4
Civilization 4 Warlords
Combat Mission Beyon Overlord
Combat Mission Barabarossa to Berlin
Combat Mission Afrika Korps
Conquest of the Agean
Crown of Glory
Crisader Kings
Dangerous Waters
Dark Crusade
Down in Flames Eastern Front
Disciples 2
Dominions 3
Doom 3
Doom 3 Resurrection of Evil
Dragoon - Prussias Glory
Enemey Engaged - Commanche vs Hokum (This is only game I can't get to run at the moment)
Falcon 4.0 Allied Force
Forge of Freedom
Fritz 8
Galactic Civilizations II
Galactic Civilizations II Dark Avatar
Harpoon 3 ANW
Hearts of Iron 2
Heroes of Might and Magic 5
Heroes of Might and Magic 5 Hammers of Fate
Highway to the Reich
Icewind Dale II
Janes F-18
Tin Sodiers Julius Ceasar
Lock On Modern Air Combat
Mechwarrior Black Knight
Mechwarrior Vengeance
Medieval II Total War
Flight Sim 2004
Myst III
Neverwinter Nights
Neverwinter Nights II
Oblivion
iL2 + Expansions (I had trouble installing the second exapnsion but a workaround is available)
Pharoah
Riven
Sacred Underworld
Space Empires V
High Heat 2001
Starfleet Command 2
Strategic Command 2 (You need to copy a DLL into the Windows/System32 directory after you install it before you can play)
TacOps 4
Take Command 2nd Manassas
UFO Aftershock (You need to use the no cd crack because the Starforce copy protection for this game does not wok under Vista)
War in the Pacific
World at War

As you can see this is a pretty big list with very few problems. I think the rumours of Vista incompatibility with gmaes has been greatly over exagerated.

For the record I am running a two year old system specced as follows:

P4 3.2 (not dual core but it is hyperthreaded)
Creative Audigy ZS Platinum Pro
Nvidia GT6600 graphics card
2 gb DDR2 memory
2 x 160 gb Western Digital drives RAID0 <-- Vista had trouble installing the correct driver for the RAID controller and for a day or so I had woefully slow disk speed until I upgraded to the driver available on Intel's website.

My computer scored a 4.3 on performance (Vista has built in performance testing) and as far as the interface goes, I am using Aero and I notice no visible slow downs. I don't play many graphics intensive games but I have not noticed any noticable slow downs in any of my games.

I was expecting the worst but have been very satisfied with the OS to date.

Cheers

Is there a website that list the games that work with Vista, and most importantly, those amongst the latter games that do not work ?
Maybe this is off topic, and I would be gratefull to be directed to the right topic place
