Not to worry my friend. I have developed a scheme over the last couple of years to avoid getting fired. It takes a huuuge amount of discipline to play two or three turns andthen get back to work. But so far, so good. Thanks

I too have been spending far too much time on this game. And to think I used to do the same thing but on PACWAR, TOAW-CW, or (insert you latest favorite here).

Auslander,

Are from DC, or the "DC area"? I live in Prince William County, VA (out near Middleburg). Bull Run starts less than a mile from my house. It would be neat to know someone in the area that plays the game (that I didn't hook myself:) ).

Fallschirmjager,

I know I'm getting old when there's someone in this forum that was born the year I graduated high school! :)

Welcome Auslander,

Sleep

Post by mogami »

To play, or not to play: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler online to suffer
The slings and arrows (and anti tank fire) of outrageous combat results,
Or to take arms against a sea of opponets in PBEM,
There by having no end of them? To play: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand op fires and shocks
That your core force is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To play, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;
For in that sleep what dreams may come
When we have shut off our computer,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of ISP by minute rather then one low montly bill.;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The ever present Tiger, the Wurferman on ammo dump,
The pangs of crew bailouts, the artys delay,
The lack of orders with C & C on and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes with 40 minute turns,
When he himself might his quietus make against the AI
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear (or shrapnel for that matter),
To grunt and sweat under a weary game,
But that the dread of something after a less then marginal victory,
The oft discover'd country from whose bourn
a commander returns with burnt out eyes, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those lossess to keep those victory hexes we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience (and hidden AT guns) does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution (640x480)
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought (and cigerette smoke and glazed over eyeballs),
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their assaults turn awry, (usally into a building or 'freindly' mine)
And lose the name of action and untold victory points

Bravo!! Bravo!!!

I wish I could be that witty and erudite- unfortunately, I am marching on no sleep today! (Still trying to perfect my lackluster performance on the tutorials... I can assault a (dummy) bunker like nobody's business!!)

And David- Yes, I am in Prince William County as well- I live in Woodbridge, near the dreaded Potomac Mills mall. We will have to play online- I think a sound beating is what I need to learn how to play this game well.

Cheers,

Auslander (Chris Lehto)

Hi, nah it was just a spur of the moment response to this thread and triggered by the 'Henry V' sig line. If I had a minutes sleep for every hour I've spent on SPWaW or other wargames I'd break Rip Van Winkles record for sleep.

Auslander,

I never enjoyed getting my butt handed to me on a platter at anything I've ever done. I would imagine that dangling a carrot just out of your reach, so to speak, would be much more enjoyable and motivating for you.

I don't mind playing the part of the "more intelligent AI". If you beat me because you did the right things and have better "stuff", I'll still have fun. I don't mind playing the French, for example, if it provides for a good 1940 battle.

But, if a "whoopin'" is what you want, I can accomodate you. :)

Let me know if you are up to it. I suggest a pre-done scenario. Would you prefer a small or large battle?

Regards,

Butt whippings

Howdy. At present Taglia is beating the tar out of my Italians in Russia Dec 42 (Operation 'Little Saturn' )It is only turn 7 and my force is destroyed or routed. First PBEM game I have played in a long time. I like online battles much more but this one has been fun (If some what predictable) 2.4k Itailians vrs 7k Soviet. I did manage to kill a few T-34's and 1 KV-1e. Next I will try to talk him into being the Greeks in 1940 while I try an assault as Italy.
He is going to post the AAR on his web site and I recommend him as a good opponent for anyone looking for PBEM games.
I was kind of down on PBEM games after some in the earlier versions but it appears all the bugs have been fixed in recent versions (6.0+ current battle 7.1) I don't recall ever winning a PBEM battle, I usally get smoked pretty fast.

I'll follow you, I'll lead you about a round,
Through bog, through bush, through brake, through brier:
Sometime a horse I'll be, sometime a hound,
A hog, a headless bear, sometime a fire;
And neigh, and bark, and grunt, and roar, and burn,
Like horse, hound, hog, bear, fire, at every turn.

That yellow thing is outside my window, I have to crawl deeper into my cave.

Greetings, another night on the Eastern front, first encounter of the T-34 (I am in 13/40's)

O soft embalmer of the still midnight,
Shutting, with careful fingers and benign,
Our gloom-pleas'd eyes, embower'd from the light,
Enshaded in forgetfulness divine:
O soothest Sleep! if so it please thee, close
In midst of this thine hymn my willing eyes,
Or wait the "Amen," ere thy poppy throws
Around my bed its lulling charities.
Then save me, or the passed day will shine
Upon my pillow, breeding many woes,--
Save me from curious Conscience, that still lords
Its strength for darkness, burrowing like a mole;
Turn the key deftly in the oiled wards,
And seal the hushed Casket of my Soul.
The game is saved and will rest a while.
Before the fire begins anew,
A few hours of hexes on my iris burn'd
Before leading on my weary crew's

Hey Mogs,

I agree with the online part! Lately, as you know, I just can't find any time to do it (we are done with seasonal lay-off) I guess that means more PBEM for me.:( Can't wait for winter......;)

PS-Do you have a classical library next-door or something?:D

Greetings 11 battles into long campaign with a core force of Italians 11 DV's in a row. The last a terribly long defense against a horde of angry Russians 11/41 My poor Tank company comader was overrun and killed when his 13/40 broke down. (he was a 97)
my core is valued at around 1300 points (started at 1100 with 200 of that going to the A0 HQ unit)
A0 HQ (now S-35 Souma Tank)
A1 recon sqd (4man) (now incursori Sqd 6man)
A2 81mm mortar
A3 81mm mortar

B0 Tank Company HQ 11/39 tank (now 13/40)
B1 11/39 (now 13/40)
B2 recon sqd (4man) now incursori sqd (6man)
B3 recon sqd (4man) now incursori sqd (6 man)

C0 1st Platoon 11/39 (now 13/40)
C1 11/39 (now 13/40)
C2 same
C3 same
C4 recon sqd (4man) now incursori sqd (6man)
C5 same
C6 same
C7 Flame team (3 man)

D0 2nd Plt same as 1st Plt

E0 3rd Plt same as 1st Plt

F0 MC Platoon HQ
F1 MC Sqd
F2 MC Sqd
F3 MC Sqd

the tanks are all in the 70s and up (5x90's)
the infantry riders are in 60's and up (changing to incursori dropped them a bit but they have reached their final upgrade and should all be veteran in a battle or two (if they live)

The MC are all in 70's and up

I don't think there will be any more equipment upgrades for a while so the points will pile up. I have only killed 1 T-34 so far (flame team op fire at 1 hex) The 13/40 AP rounds just bounce off.
I may be forced into changing A2 and A3 into AT guns (those nice 90mm AA things)

The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold,
And his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold;
And the sheen of their spears was like stars on the sea,
When the blue wave rolls nightly on deep Galilee.

Like the leaves of the forest when Summer is green,
That host with their banners at sunset were seen:
Like the leaves of the forest when Autumn hath blown,
That host on the morrow lay withered and strown.

For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast,
And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed;
And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill,
And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!

And there lay the steed with his nostril all wide,
But through it there rolled not the breath of his pride;
And the foam of his gasping lay white on the turf,
And cold as the spray of the rock-beating surf.

And there lay the rider distorted and pale,
With the dew on his brow, and the rust on his mail:
And the tents were all silent, the banners alone,
The lances unlifted, the trumpet unblown.

And the widows of Ashur are loud in their wail,
And the idols are broke in the temple of Baal;
And the might of the Gentile, unsmote by the sword,
Hath melted like snow in the glance of the Lord!

Take that you Stalinist b#*&%ds!!!! (opps I thought the forum censor would modify it:eek: )
