Wdolson, as for Linux Debian (I am a Debian user myself) you have like 9,000! [FREE, of course [8D]] programmes to choose. You may check that myriad of Debian packages. Maybe they already have what you need.

I only use Windows as a platform for games though.

I am aware of the variety of open source programs out there. For work, I need to use Windows (I write Windows programs in C++), I have quite a few utilities that are Windows only, and then there are games. If I were to switch to Linux, aboud the only things I could do with it were e-mail and writing the occasional document. I would be constantly bopping back and forth between Windows and Linux. Even if they were on different machines (I do have 3 under my desk and a KVM switch), it would get tiresome.

Then sharing documents with my business partner who is not as computer literate would become a pain. She has enough trouble with shared out Windows folders. She keeps muttering about how great Macs are (though her Mac hasn't been on in over a year).

I'm stuck with Windows until there is a good Windows emulator for Linux. WINE showed promise at one time, but I think it's stalled now. I don't think it will ever be what people had hoped.

I experimented with switching to Linux several years ago. The Linux box is one of those sitting under my desk. It hasn't even been plugged in since we moved here in 2003. I have had the intention of getting it going again, but it's been too low a priority.

I deliberately live behind the technology curve. It's a lot cheaper and I can do everything I want to do.

My sentiments exactly.

My brother doesn't just LAG behind the technology curve...it has lapped him at least 4 or 5 times!

There is a solution - but it's memory and CPU intensive - VMware... Run your linux on a virtual computer. MS Does have Virtual PC for free but I cut my eyeteeth on VMware.

Come on guys, I was just looking for a simple "YES" or "NO", not a lot of techno speak[:D]! I'm just a simple ol' boy who knows just enough about computers to get me in trouble (thats why I've had to replace mine twice in the last 4 1/2 years)!

Agreed... Buying a new OS immediately when its released is a huge mistake. Give them at least a year to 18 months to get a few of the kinks out...
