Many threads wander off topic. Hara would be 108 years old today if still alive, and as far as I can tell there is not a sniff of him on the Web. So . . . off topic this thread goes.
Which isn't bad. So far I've learned a couple things.

As for the article on China, I don't really understand why China would need to invade Taiwan before the Olympics. Seems this would result in half the world boycotting them. Besides, as was pointed out, China is not positioned qualitatively to take on Taiwan (backed by the US) yet. I'm looking for problems after 2008 when, I'm assuming, their trade wealth will permit upgrading their military. Of course, the more China becomes tied to the world economy, the less likely it is to cause real problems.
Well, it stated there pretty clear that Olympics will provide cover for military build up, monsoon window for attack, and will be a good time to ease the tension with Taiwan before the attack.
Why? I guess we will never fully understand how dictatorship works for real as we enjoy democracy for 200 years. One thing I know, that they put it in a form of law that if peaceful means of reuniting Taiwan fail, they will use military force.
Some food for thought:
China executes people for economic crimes.
China is the only country, which filters Internet content on the state level. That’s it – the big brother thinks that CNN is a bad site, not a single user from China will be able to access CNN (just an example). They can cut off it in mere seconds for the whole country.
My cousin married chinese girl and was working as a teacher or something in China. Village cop was watching him 24/7 in hope that “western spy” will finally expose himself. For 3 years.
We have clerk who immigrated to Canada being 12 years old. She still believes that Taiwan is an occupied Chinese territory, supported by US and ruled by western marionettes.
They steamrolled 2000 students with tanks and nobody in the world lifted a finger to punish them. Why? Look around your house. 50% percent of the junk was made in China.
Recent carefully orchestrated “civil” protest against Japan. When police stood and watched. Do you think they can’t do the same in Canada, US, Europe to influence local governments? Go to the China town – they don’t speak English there. How in hell police or spooks are going to find anyone there?
Heart of Iron 2 was banned in China because of presence on Nationalist faction in game (the one that fled to Taiwan in RL).
They already upgraded their military. Su-30 has the same performance as F-15, Kilo class subs in shallow waters outperform nuclear subs, new russian DDs are very potent missile platform.
Conclusion: people are easily manipulated; communists know how to do it. They don’t like western civilization and afraid of it. They take Taiwan issue very seriously; it’s like Pearl Harbour for Americans or Berlin wall for Germans. And looking at Somalia and Iraq they are making false assmptions - they think that US cannot sustain high casualties and will not get into the conflict with high attrition rate.
Still it's just a scenario. Pretty viable scenario per se. Try to find something like this on conflict with Iran or North Korea regarding nuclear weapon. There are some plans about aerial strikes and such, but nothing really serious.
Edit: I'm taking securities course on Thursdays, we have exchange student from China there, Steven[:D], he is in my research group. I'm going to ask him what he thinks about China "liberating" Taiwan.[8D]

I'm not so pessimistic. Remember the line from Jurassic Park, life will find a way? So will freedom.

I completely missed that. Maybe it was in a linked article.

Yeah, these are so obviously staged that they would be laughable - except that it's disturbing to me that the Chinese government is still taking such an issue over text books. The protests could just be "See? We told you our people are mad!" or it could be an early part of a planned escalation to something else. I'm not suggesting they plan any military action against Japan, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some economic/diplomatic pressure applied or maybe a renewed spat over one of the islands both China and Japan lay claim to. You know, make Japan worry a little bit and put them on the defensive. The good news is that maybe Japan will get a little more aggressive in building the JDF while events are still harmless.
You know, he's right: this thread has gotten off topic. Gee, has anyone asked recently where v1.5 is? Maybe I should start a thread on that.

Actually, there is no version 1.50. They are just saying that to keep the complaints down ("Don't worry, it will be fixed in 1.50!")[:'(][:D]

I'm glad your search was rewarded after nearly 2 years! I finally got hold of a copy of "Japanese Destroyer Captain" just last week and am about halfway through the book. It's a great read.

No luck on Lt Commander Ishii - i did managed to locate his name on a list of Japanese Naval officers, but no real details on him.

I kind of figured that might be the case, but thanks for trying. If it was that hard to find out about someone as relatively well known as Hara then Ishii is going to be really tough. I think it would take someone looking at the records in Japan to actually track down the information about him.

Well, two years ago, very little was on the web about Hara or Tanaka, so maybe in a couple of years details on LtCdr Ishii Hagumu will be on the web as well...

RE: What Ever Happened to Capt. Hara?
I read Hara's book years ago (in high school? college?) ... the most memorable portion of it to me was the party they had prior to sailing where he had to drink a toast with each sailor from his ship who approached him. IIRC, he was carted back to the ship in a wheelbarrow...

Its not the rate of US losses, that could be worrying, it is the amount of power that can be diverted to protect Taiwan. With 1 and a half war already going on (Iraq and Afghanistan) and Iran still looming ahead I wonder what forces would be available without seriously weakening homeland defense. The number of modern chinese planes are quite low.
China has about 400 Su27 and Su30 aircraft, a few dozen J10As, and not many more J8Fs (an attack aircraft). Currently, the Chinese air force is mostly some 2,000 locally built copies of Russian MiG-19s (J6) and MiG-21 (J7).
http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htmurp ... 70220.aspx
The chinese know that for at least 15 yrs they would not stand a chance to do it (lets not forget about the taiwanese armd forces) unless the US is REALLY overcomitted.
What makes me worry that chinese are long planning 4th generation warfare (they stated some 10 yrs ago -in their white book maybe?- that in the forseeably future they wont be strong enough to tkae headon with the US, so in case of a confrontation they will revert to guerilla and other unusual means of fighting), in which ALL western countris (incl Russia) seem to lag behind.
Just my 2 cents.
