H3 ANW MP - which version is best?

Post by Anonymous »

Hello,

after half a year out of Harpoon I tried to play H3 ANW MP in a LAN. But it always crashes (back to Windows desktop). So which release is most stable and suited for MP? I bought the CD-ROM-version with 3.7.0. Right now I have 3.7.1. Few days ago I downloaded 3.7.3 (not yet installed). Tried to download 3.8.6, but was not allowed to catch it from the FTP-server.

It is a real nerve-racking experience. I bought H3 ANW because I have bought everything from the Harpoon series and have played it for 15 years - and especially because of the MP feature.

Another question: Can I go back to 3.7.0 from 3.7.x?
Any help ?

Regards

Ralf

Ralf,
3.7.1 is the only version to definitely avoid for multiplayer. I've posted some tips in tm.asp?m=1370689 and more importantly

These applies thru 3.8.0 RC6
  • Disable MP Logging in harpoon3.ini at the server to have the game run faster and not make potentially gigabyte sized log files
  • Run each instance of the server on a single CPU core, use task manager or a program like setaffinity. This may apply on the client side too but I've yet to personally see multi-processor affect the client piece.
  • The server is more tolerant of players signing into it one by one instead of everyone hitting the connect button at the same moment.
  • The smaller the scenario the better to prevent the server from being loaded down enough that it cannot respond to the players before the connection timeout.

Hello Tony,

Ralf,

So I was really unlucky using exakt this release! [:D]

Well, I downloaded 3.7.3 and will try this one.

But where to get 3.8.0 RC6? At Matrix -as a registered user -I found 3.7.3 and 3.8.6. But the latter was was not accessible to me. How to get those versions newer than 3.7.3?

Thanks and regards

Ralf

Hi Tony,

just tried again to download 3.8.0 RC6. This time it seems to work; no authentification at the ftp-server. I´ll inform you if it does not work properly.

Otherwise I´ll show up on the H3 ANW server soon!
Best regards

Hello,

now I have installed 3.8.0 RC6. My first experience was yesterday evenings (GMT +1) session on Tony´s server. No problems, running stable and smoothly.

Dale and the Harpoon founders say we should give ANW a try. I think they are right. I now will start playing ANW regularly and take a deeper look.

Best regards
