StarshatterMods.com - Now Open!

Post by CaptainX »

A new site dedicated to the Starshatter community is now open and operating.

It is by no means complete, but head on over and register... it'll be stock full of files and info in no time!

Many thanks to wdboyd for financing the hosting package!

StarshatterMods.com
Thanks,

CaptainX

Would it be possible to have files where ever and have links to them in StarshatterMods.com?
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

I request you to have cross references to other mod sites, like Pheagey's Starshatter Dev. Links to files along with screenshots ought to be enough. Just test out stuff with different Starshatter versions and note where it works.

There is now a Submit New File section on the site.

All files available on the site will be downloaded directly from StarshatterMods.com, they won't be linked from another site.

After running two download tests, speeds were in the 200kb to 350kb per second range on DSL connections, so the speeds are excellent.

All we have to do now is get some files... if you have any, upload them via the site. I'll be watching most of the day today to get as many files online as possible.

We also have a links section on the site for websites for mods and other things. To submit a link, just use the Contact Us section on the site for now, and it will email it to me.

In addition, a Suggestion Box is now up and running on the site. If you have an idea for the site, head on over and register, and post your idea in the suggestion box.
Thanks,

CaptainX

So first someone downloads mod elsewhere, then uploads to your site and repeat it after every new version. Did I got it right? What's wrong with mod list & links?

Pheagey has some. Just download from his sites, then upload to your own if nothing else work.

We could have a link to the page that a mod download is on, but I won't provide direct download links from this site to another site, because that's leeching bandwidth. We'd be running up someone else's data transfer rate.

Now, if someone gave permission for us to do that, that would probably be fine. But I know that I personally wouldn't want another site sucking up all of my bandwidth.

Maybe I could work on implementing a system where each mod has it's own page dedicated to it, and the team that is creating that mod would be responsible for keeping it up to date - they could login and edit the page themselves.

I'm not sure if a system like that is possible, but I'll see what I can do. At the very least, we COULD actually host websites for mods, seeing as how the hosting package we have is quite large. But I'd have to discuss that with wdboyd, as he is financing the hosting at this time.
Thanks,

CaptainX

My primary current concern, in this area, is for the players time. I know what our download speeds are for DSL.  Between 230-250 kbs.

Then there is the ligitiment concern about other sites bandwith use.

I personally don't want to have direct links to files that especially have agonizing slow download capabilities. Grouper comes to mind. It was soooooo slow. I hated that, and I have cable.

Regardless, failing to provided a direct link for file downloads.... we will provide links to worthy sites as we have already done for a few.

If you modders are happy with where your mods are currently housed and the download speeds are to your liking... of course keep them there. But if it can be obtained faster through Starshattermods.com then consider moving a copy to us.

Please be patient commanders. We are adapting and changing. Keep your suggestions coming... we will listen.

I can understand that about image files which are shown directly on page (becouse it's loaded every time someone enters page), but I don't understand how link to file on other server would leech anything [&:]

Direct link to Bailey class mass driver frigate introduced in Pheagey's Starshatter Dev site. This leechs his bandwidth... how? I bet it's much less than this:

hmmm I notice something on this model which i noticed in many models: Where there is a bay or something it looks as if the walls are too thin like paper. Maybe if the walls could be extruded to look more solid. What you think?

I've had a few website owners get angry at me because I was posting links to files that were hosted on their site, as opposed to being hosted on my own.

I think what irritates some people is that another site posts a link to something on their server, but the person who downloads the file never visits the site that is actually hosting it.

Honestly, I personally would be a little irritated if another site was posting direct links to downloads on my site without asking permission first. It's kind of like saying "I just want your files, I don't care about all the hard work you did on your site."

Now, if someone asked permission, I'd probably give it, assuming they gave credit to Starshattermods.com somewhere close to the download link.

It's just old fashioned courtesy... ask someone before you use something that is theirs, such as bandwidth.
Thanks,

CaptainX

The best thing to do is actually post the link to their main webpage of the site you wanna link to and just say something like: It has some interesting mods and images, or something like that.
Its neither polite nor proper to just link the files coz if the owners of the site get aggravated they might remove the files altogether.

Hi,

If you haven't checked out our new starshattermods site yet.... well warp on over there and take a look around.

We are gradually adding more and more content. Even privateers are welcome as long as they stay sober and behave themselves.

Starshattermods.com will provide links to notable Starshatter mods and the sites they are on.

Our current policy is not to link directly to files on other sites. [:'(]
