203mm Howitzers

Post by vahauser »

Goblin,

I played that ridiculous battle to prove an extreme point. And note that not all 24 of those howitzers were stacked in the same hex. They were stacked 4 per hex in the six hexes around the ammo carriers.

Look at my recent DARs and you will see how I actually play (nothing but mortars in my core or on-map support).

Also, I'd like to see how you actually play. Mind posting a DAR?

Goblin,

I've been banned at the Depot.  But if I ever get a chance to look at them someday, then I definitely will.

Also, that is precisely the deployment/game I was referring to at the start of this thread.  I was pointing out to Riun T that playing with Reduced Ammo ON hurts the computer more than the human player.  Every single unit in my battlegroup was deployed initially to re-supply all their full ammo loads during the first several turns of the game.  Thus demonstrating that Reduced Ammo ON favors the human player (that game was the tinderbox that started a whole lot of Forum fireworks).  Anyway, what you can't see in that huge mess of units crammed around the ammo carriers is that the 203mm howitzers are spread evenly around the ammo carriers and not all piled into the same hex (LOL, as if it matters given the enormous piles of units crammed in there anyway).

But that demonstration game was for Riun T's benefit in that I was demonstrating that the FlashFyre template still needed work and that FlashFyre was out of the country at the time so we had to wait until he got back.  But Riun T didn't want to wait and started his campaign anyway.  But that's another story.

Bottom line is that I am aware of the abuses I performed in that game.  Indeed that game was INTENDED to have as many abuses as possible because it was a demonstration game intended to show certain problems and the best way to show those problems was to make them as obvious as possible.

As an aside, I play PBEM much the same way I played that demonstration game except that I am even worse in PBEM.

However, my single-player DAR games using FlashFyre/Cataclysm are very much different than that abusive demonstration game.  In my single-player DAR games I am trying to be as entertaining as possible in addition to being challenging, using rules and restrictions that "historical" gamers might use.

I also try to use historical doctrines in my DAR games.  And I am more convinced today than ever before that it is absolutely historical for a large battalion (such as the cores I use in my DAR games) to attack on a frontage of 8-10 hexes.  I have found dozens of historical battles over the course of this weekend that confirm that every nation routinely attacked on battalion frontages of 500 yards or less throughout the war.

Before this gets too out-of-hand, I want to clear up something that have been mentioned in this thread and others:

The so-called "Flashfyre Campaign" is not my campaign; I do not play according to its format or rules. In response to those who indicated they were tired of "beating" the AI every battle, I looked for in-game settings that were not being used by the very people complaining; I simply provided a list of the ones that could be adjusted to make the battles tougher.

FlashFyre,

Heh.  The FlashFyre campaign format will forever bear your name.

That said, however, I'd like to see some of your actual DARs too.  I'd very much like to know the rules you DO play your campaigns with.

Riun T,

Congratulations on the new addition to your family.  I wish her all the best.

And don't worry.  I am slowly but surely playing KG Hauser in the desert.  I finished a few turns this weekend and will be posting another report soon.  I just play real slow these days.

Goblin,

I owe you an apology.  I just rechecked my DAR and my 203mm howitzers are indeed all stacked in 2 or 3 hexes instead of the 6 hexes I thought they were.  I must be getting senile.

Anyway, even in a PBEM game there would nothing terribly dangerous (abusive true, but not dangerous) about that initial deployment provided nothing fired to give away the re-supply position.  Obviously, the 203mm howitzers would have to load up and scatter to other firing positions once they were fully re-supplied.

But the point you made is a very valid one.  Just how many "big" units (heavy tanks, heavy artillery, heavy forts, etc.) can you pile into a hex and still perform any sort of military mission?  I don't know the answer to that question.  I am going to look into it now. . .

Goblin,

Well I have done some "looking into" the question you posed to me in an earlier thread (and I posed again above) and have found some answers.  May I post in this thread the answers I've found?
