Ideas for Scenarios

Post by JeffroK »

Some thoughts for those wanting to create mods.

British Attack on Rhodes - 1941 6th British Division spent some time in training for this.

Tobruk - the Australian defense

Both would use the equipment and TOE used in the game, maps of Rhodes may be the problem plus working out how to garrison the Tobruk perimiter.

PS Has anyone worked out how to portray Naval Gun fire support... More Airstrikes??

JeffK,

Both battles are good ideas for scenarios.

At the moment I use more airstrikes to simulate naval gunfire.

Tobruk sounds like an excellent choice. I think you would need the minefields from BftB to get an accurate representation though. Perhaps Battleaxe, Brevity, Crusader also?

Thanks Hop,

I was considering the creation of a small "island" offshore and placing 1-2 Arty Rgts to represent Naval support. IMHO you would get more flexibity, you could order a longer bombardment or get arty support  at all times.

KW, I also think Compass, Bardia Jan41 & Beda Fomm would make interesting topics. I assumed COTA had a fortification type terrain which could represent minefields, fortified posts etc (I need to look at the scenario designers more [8D])

Plus some battles from the Syrian or Abbysinian Campaign (Agordat, Keren, Kassala, Gallabat)

This is a good idea! perhaps use the fort terrain (metallic colored) in the shape of a battleship for the island.

Plus try to work out the arty equivalent of DD, CL & CA's

Plus the RN had a number of Monitors in the Med, ie Ladybird.

Most DDs mounted 6 or 8 guns ( 6 inches ) equivalent to 155 How/Guns. So roughly equivalent to a medium battery. Lt Cruisers mounted 8" guns IIRC and these are heavy 203mm guns so equivalent to a Hvy How battallion I'd say. However, naval guns often had more ammo. if the weather was good then they offered a reliable platform, otherwise if bad they would not be as effective. They were generally guns rather than howitzers and so had a fairly flat trajectory with long range.

Just a quick correction, light cruisers had 6 inch guns and heavies had 8 inch. Arjuna has just got back home so he's probably tired. [;)]
Ray

Edit: DDs would range from olld ships with 4 inch through to modern with 5.5 inch but most at 4.7.

I think that would be pushing the system too far.

It would make a great idea for future Games, the Japanese push through Malaya, Burma, Phillipines & DEI would provide numerous scenarios.

Burma would be way too big. But I think Malaysia could be done with the current engine. You would have to have the invading forces just appear on the beachs (As they would if they were paras) But then the Japs did land Paras to take one of the airfields.
