UNITS DISAPPEARED in TOAWIII

Post by dogfacedick »

I've been having some problems with scenarios (native to the official Matrix release)(In this case Operation Blau) with freezes--after the latest one I restarted TOAW and all of the units were gone--vanished. I rebooted (WinXP), same problem.
Any guesses.

It sounds like you had pressed this button, which toggles the unit visibility. Start your game and click the red circled button.

Alternately, you can check the menu item, as shown, and make sure that the "Visible" option is selected (note the dot, next to it).

Or press the 'I' key.

Good catch James.

I'm still interested in the crashes, though. TOAW is pretty stable for most people. Is there any pattern?

True. I'm so "old school", I keep forgetting about the hotkeys. Causes me no end of grief when my toddlers climb up in my lap and start hitting keys...[:D]

Dogface, can you give us a bit more information on the nature of the freezes? When they occur, what are you doing, what patch level, etc? It might be the problem with the number of characters being displayed when you're hovered over a very long terrain description. That should be fixed in the patch that is going to be released...any day now.

James, you little tease! You just had to put that in didn't you? [:)]

Best wishes,
I love the smell of TOAW in the morning...

Dogface,
I need to look at Operation Blau. The good news is that it isn't frozen, the bad news is that you need a lot of patience[>:][>:]. It's very slow, although it should be faster with the patch, it's still very slow.

Thanks for your responses....I do NOT recall hitting either the hotkey or the menu item (I couldn't, since the game had frozen...not just TOAW but the entire XP operating system, forcing me to reboot)(!!). But--I was able to figure out that somehow the game had gone into invisible mode. One of those "features" that probably seemed great to some programmer--damned if I can see a use for it, but I'm just a player.

As for freezes...I'm on a Falcon NW machine with 1GIG RAM, runs just about any game well, altho the system is a little long in the tooth. The crashes are unpredictable--but always seem to occur during all the number-crunching during combat (on my turns)...everything...just...stops. And I do mean everything. Sometimes doing the CTR-ALT-DELETE thingy doesn't even work...but when it does I lose that turn.

Hope this helps. I love this game, despite frustrations.

dogface, over'n'out.

Sounds like overheating.

If you're overclocking, turn it down. You also should turn off the computer, open the case and spray some compressed air aroung the CPU and other parts. Dust acts as a very good insulator causing parts to overheat.

You use it to examine the terrain under a large group of units. It can be difficult to see the most efficient path or the best terrain to place a unit for an assault/defense if there is a mass of units in an area. This allows you to just flip off the unit icons to see whats underneath.
