hi, very interesting game both from you and Mosses....

as for the carriers, it might be even better for you if you don't sink them - they will not respawn as Essexs and they are out of action for a several months....[;)]

now when you have total CV superiority in Pac do you have any plans to take advantage of current situation in this particulare theatre?

As to "plans to take advantage" .. no big "General Hoeppner" type plans ... like invading all the islands in the SE corner of the map! ... but the additional, unplanned for "freedom of action" will be very welcome ... this will greatly ease the conquest of the Solomons/NG area ... and reduce the losses we would other wise probably have taken and probably mean that we can control more territory for a time. But the priority at the moment is still in the SRA area ... so until Java is safely invaded, the KB will remain West ... and this is probably several more weeks.

Way up earlier in the thread I did mention that for this game, I had decided not to split the KB (in all previous games I had split the KB). But I will admit that the unplanned carrier outage, is making me rethink this. Might change my mind on that one. But the difference, at this piont, won't be so great.

IMHO, sinking enemy transports could delay Allies even more than possesion of Pacific atolls, so perhaps you could conduct some raids once when you finish job in SRA...

I'm not great admirer of Pacific expansion pack[:D] too... a lot of things can go wrong for Japan.....

Actually I was headed out to do exactly some of that in the Indian Ocean - when that Assie Bde showed up at Derby and had to recall - but yes raids on both sides of the map will be easier now, for a while .. but gotta hurry and get some troops aboard Java now !!! Even Moses is worried that I haven't invaded Java yet - so can't let him down too much!!

Singapore, Singapore, Singapore!!!

The rest of the map has gotten very quiet over the past few days. Moses kicked off the "Battle for Singapore" by flying in 200+ aircraft from all over into Singapore itself and there seem to be at least another 100+ close by ... also the RN have shown up to provide support.

We've reacted by moving the zeroes that were in Burma down to Khota Bharu - bacially they go where the AVG goes - and since the AVG went to Singapore - so did the zeros ...

So anyway, big furball today over Singapore ..

Looks like Moses has withdrawn the air and combat navy from Singapore ... we will keep pushing on ... with the departure of the USN CVs and the recovery of our air groups, we're actually enjoying a bit of "air superiority" in the Solomons/Papua area ... a three day storm mostly covered the unloading of a large BF, some CD guns and NLF oh as 10K supply or so.

At the same time a large BF is unloading at Rabaul, together with a pile of supply. We've taken Shortlands and have a large BF headed there as well.

We've started planning for PM but decision to go or not won't come for a while. It will still be several weeks before KB could (even in theory) arrive over here.

The Initial Java invasion force:

12 Army HQ
38ID
23IB
8 Armor
1 Res Armor
6 Res Armor
1 Mortar Rgt
12 IER
28 BF
125 BF
18 Av Rgt
2 Yok

Has or is loading aboard ship and heading towards the Celebes. KB is refitting at Kendari. When we move, we want everyone moving together, so it will still be a few days before the move starts.

In Oz, looks like, for the moment, we have things under control. The 4ID is at Darwin, one RCT of 2ID is at Wyndham and two RCTs of 2ID are now at Derby, one of these RCTs will pursue the Aussie Bde that advanced to Derby, the other RCT will advance from Derby to Broome and attempt to take the final Northern Oz port.

In China, nothing but training for our airforce except in the North where we are advancing both West and SW from Yenen. We will attempt to cut off the large group we retreated out of Yenen, but occasional spots (we've had a lot of t-storms up there lately) indicate Moses is flooding the area with troops.

In Burma, the 33ID has reached Mandalay and the 55ID will arrive shortly. Don't know if it will be enough. The IJA 2 Raiding Rgt is prepping for Mandalay and could be dropped to support an attack if we think one is viable. Currently the fort level is zero, but there are a lot of units there.

In the PI, we had a coordination disaster and everybody arrived at exactly the wrong time and the whole pile (our whole pile) got booted back to Lingayen. We will have to recover and try again. Even with over 200% of the historical forces on Luzon, it still isn't enough to shift Moses out of his positions!!!

More summaries with screen shots will be forth comming at month end (about 5 game days hence).

Got some time to do a screen shot. Here is Solomons/Papua area and some dispositions and intentions. We come into this area with an expectation of being here a while, but ultimately knowing that this is a delaying action theater. At least in previous games, I've been able to hold the Allies attention in this area until about late '43. But by then the bulk of the Japanese combat Navy will probably be in and remain in the West, due to the need to protect the SRA and any direct threats to that area. We will have to defend over here with planes and light surface forces, and small chunks of LCUs.

But during late 42 and hopefully early '43 the bulk of our combat navy may be over here due to the need to delay the Americans (assuming they try to come this way).

Well, Moses has come back to Singapore with a pile of planes. We did what we did of course without any idea there was any airforce at Singapore and - as per the way the game works - he moved back in to Singapore based on his knowledge of our deployments. But as it turns out, our attacks weren't totally useless. We were attacking from two bases and NOT doing a pre-attack strafing run this time. Our primary offensive strike with the Sallys/Nells/Oscars/Zeros from Kuantan against Singapore met stiff opposition but managed to at least "touch" the airfield. Our second strike with Zeros and Nells from Khota Bharu shot down a pile of his fighters.

Otherwise, the KB is preparing to leave port, as soon as most of her planes are ready. We will probably do a "pre-invasion" attack with the carriers to try to further reduce air power ... the actual invasion troops are all enroute, but will not arrive nearby for roughly a week.

Here is a shot of the area around Java, the next major target area. We just tried to raid Soerabaja but KB only steamed 6 hexes despite everyone having highspeed orders to go 8 hexes ... so only the Zeros went it ... no bombers ... well with surprise lost, we will pull back for a couple of days, cover landings to Koepang, Maccasar and then refuel and try again. In the mean time, the troops are on the way and will be arriving in the area over the next week. Unfortunately, the first wave has the farthest to go, they are comming in from Japan and are current off Iwo Jima, so they won't be here until a bit over a week, by then we should be ready to go. Well as ready as we can be given the timeframe and all other events.

In CBI, Mandalay finally fell, though we flubbed things up about as badly as we could've. The fresh 55th sat for 2 days awaiting orders to attack, once I failed to order anyone to attack, then even worse ordered the beat up 33rd to attack by itself. Finally, the dumb general got it right and ordered both to attack. In the event, the 55th probably could've done it by itself, and maybe the two days rest helped. But attacking with the 33rd by itself did not. Now the 33rd is really beat up and the 55th is still in good shape. But, now the nightmare is that all the Allid units (18 of them) retreated towards Lashio. I don't know who got S#$%# worse, me or Moses. Now I have to face to eventually that he gets to use these units in China (many are Indian/Brit) for free even though we have a house rule against sending Brit/India troops to China w/o paying PP. But I can't very deny him a retreat route. I think I would have rather had them retreat to Mytchina. But I guess the computer choose the closer base. Funny, but I don't remember this happening before. Not sure why, I guess it should happen every time.

Well the 23IB is prepped for Mytchina, so they will go there. The 4IB is prepped for Lashio so they go there. Now we have to decide where to prep/send the divisions. But one of day rest first.

Oh and we still have dreams of taking Akyab, just no means!

Well Burma campaign has certainly been different than what we expected. We figured the big air battle would be here, but Moses has chosen to have it down around Singapore. But the outcome wasn't much different than we expected. Horrendous losses on both sides. We are counting on his near term replacement rate being lower than ours. We can certainly replace the planes. But there will be quite a few Oscar and Zero units headed to China for retraining soon!

Post by jwilkerson »

Not a whole lot going on this turn except at Singapore and in the P.I. At Singapore we came back (uh forward) across the Straits again. Our prep points gave us reasonable losses vis-a-vis Moses, but we still have to survive his almost certain Shock Attack back at us. Not sure whether we can. But prep point are about our onoly hope. Most of our units have been prepping for Singapore since day one. That's probably one reason we had such a tough try getting down the Malaya Penn.

In the PI we've tried everything else so now we're gonna try "going to the right"!!! So we sent the assault force across the river to San M. and finally took a hex against opposition!!! ... Now maybe we can get a bead on Clark Field. Of course Moses could play revolving door and attack Limgayen, but we've moved 150 AV of Naval troops in there and have more on the way. And even if he does that he walks away from Manilla and Bataan for good, so I'm not sure we would've welcome it. The conservative thing for him to do would be to move to Bataan or Manilla. But he might just sit there and make me come and boot him out. And I'm not sure I can, though if I can sit on the hex, I'll stop the resource production of supply, so that will at least be something.

Ok as January 1942 ends, we will do our Monthly Reports. First we will survey each major front. The first front is CBI. In this theater we have offensives underway in both Burma and North China. The month of January ended with our capture of Mandalay and the pursuit of surviving British/Indian and Chinese units towards Lashio. They are pretty beat up. Our 4IB just retreated 17 units with a deliberate assault!?

The 21IB has signifiant prep points for Mytchina, so it will head there and will be supported by the 55ID. The 4IB which has significant prep points for Lashio will continue the pursuit to that town and be supported by 33ID. The 2nd Raiding Regiment will prep for Lashio (it is located at Mandalay).

Once either Lashio or Mytchina fall, we will start some units prepping for Akyab.

The next front is Malaya. As the month ends we are besieging Singapore. Moses gave us a hecque of a hard time at Jahore Bharu, but now the tables have turned as all of our units had switched their prep points to Singapore from turn 1 of the game. We are now average 70+ on prep points in the Singapore hex. But Moses still has significant air/naval forces operating in the area, primarily out of Palembang. We have two large air groups in Malaya, with 100+ Sallys, 100+ Nells and 100+ Zeros though usually about half of these are down for maintenance.

Next is P.I. this is our great embarrassment. We completely blew the first attack on Clark and all of our units were ignomiously retreated back to Lingayen. So we crossed the river farther West at San Marcelino and will approch Clark from that side. We have brought in several SNLFs to hold our supply base at Lingayen - well we hope they do!!!
