Another problem after installing new patch

Post by shunwick »

I am trying to install BioEd. I am following the instructions carefully but I have a problem with the COW.REG file. In lieu of any direction, I created the file in notepad, saved it as COW.REG in the Equipment Editor folder, double clicked on it, and I get the following error message from Windows XP SP2:

Error
"Cannot import C:\Matrix Games\The Operational Art of War III\Equipment Editor\COW.REG: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor."

So, I have done something wrong. Does anyone have any idea what?

Edit: Solved. Spelling mistake.

Best wishes,

Ok, after discovering my spelling error I managed to get COW.REG to install into the registry.

Now Ihave another problem. BioEd launched ok but when I try to load V104ACOW300.exe I get a load of errors saying that it cannot load some of the graphics files. After clicking on ok to clear all the errors, I get to the main display but every time I try to select an equipment category I get another two errors. The first is unable to load equipment256.bmp and the second is unable to load i00000g.bmp.

Should it be this difficult?

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TalonSoft\The Operational Art of War, CW]
"game_path"="C:\\Matrix Games\The Operational Art of War III"

Is this supposed to be on two lines or only one line?

Two lines . In additon, the line
"game_path"="C:\\Matrix Games\The Operational Art of War III"
should be
"game_path"="C:\\Matrix Games\\The Operational Art of War III"
Note the doubled slashes.

Ralph,

It doesn't say that in the pdf. Definitely only 1 slash.

So can I just make the alteration and double-click REG.COW again or do I have to make alterations to the registry first?

Hi Ralph,

I'm having the same problem as shunwick. I've tried making the changes of adding in the // but am still getting the error message of not being able to find graphics files.

I bought TOAW III when it first came out hoping that it would include an equipment editor. Now, having waited all this time, its really frustrating to have the set up be so complex.

You should edit either but not both. Double-clicking on the .reg file updates the registry.
Try using
"game_path"="C:\\Matrix Games\\The Operational Art of War III\\graphics"

and I'll try following the directions and see if there are any other gotchas in it.

Adding \graphics fixed the problem for me. Thanks for the quick response Ralph. Now on to the next challenge! - seeing if I can get a modified file to work with TOAW III.

Ok. I didn't add \graphics, just altered REG.COW to include the \\ before The Operational Art of War III and this works as well. OMG ... I now have an equipment editor for TOAW III. [:)]

Thanks for your help Ralph and thanks to you and all the TOAD team for the all the hard work on the patch/update. It's like Christmas. [:)]
