How similar is this to the Total War series?

In Slitherine Strategies' Legion Gold, Gates of Troy and Spartan and Chariots of War (re-releases), you will lead your nation to victory in the ancient world’s greatest battles. Control a vast empire and fight epic battles on 3D battlefields. Historical heroes to come to your aid it will take strategy to build your civilization and conquer your enemies. Gates of Troy and Spartan are fully compatible and owners of both titles can play the full set of scenarios with the Gates of Troy engine.

How similar is this to the Total War series?

I ask because I liked those games, but after playing for a few months, they got kind of old. From the screen shots, it appears to be the same basic game, but looks can be deceiving.

I play both the Slitherine games and Total War games. The Economics in Chariots etc. are a tad more complicated than in Shogun etc. The battles in Shogun etc. are a lot more complicated than in Chariots etc. you can actually be watching TV at the same time as a Chariots battle. Don't try that with Shogun;^) I find both enjoyable for what they are.
