THE CENTRAL PACIFIC: SUNDAY DECEMBER 7TH, 1941

The Japanese have apparently launched a carrier air attack at Pearl Harbor and have launched multiple amphibious assaults across the Pacific. Due to serious synch problems our reports from the front appear sketchy and unreliable. Reports indicate Japanese landings at Guam and Wake Island. Initially there was a report of Japanese troops being repulsed at Wake Island but later it was discovered that Japan has indeed captured the island.

Initial reports from Pearl Harbor were way out of synch so an actual damage report was provided by Admiral Kimmel:

SITUATION REPORT: 12-7-41......CONTINUED


The Allies lose 159 AC today as Japan bombs airfields at Pearl Harbor, Singapore, and Clark Field. 10 Allied ships are sunk on the first day of the war. Due to Japan's complete surface and naval air superiority, Allied high command adopts a surface raider strategy....single ships will be sent out to intercept overeaching Japanese offensive thrusts in an attempt to slow down Japans expansion. CL Dragon is ordered to sail at full speed from Palembang to break up the Japanese assault at Kuching, CL Adelaide is ordered to proceed at full speed to hit the Japanese landing at Rabaul, and CA Pensacola and CA Louisville are ordered to intercept an Japanese convoy that appears to be heading to Tarawa.


SOUTH PACIFIC:

Japan lands troops at Rabaul and another IJN TF approaches Tarawa.

MALAYA:

Japanese troops go ashore at Khota Bharu. Admiral Palliser forms a surface TF around BB PoW and BC Repulse and heads south at full speed to get away from the menacing Nells at Saigon.

BORNEO:

Japanese troops wade ashore at Kuching, Miri and Brunei. Allied retention of Kuching is critical if they are to supply and reinforce Singapore.


PI:

Japan lands at Lingayen, Vigan and Laoag on Luzon. Japanese troops fight their way ashore at Cayagan and Davao on Mindanao. Baby KB sails into the Celebes Sea to intercept Allied shipping fleeing to the south from the PI while 2 powerful IJN surface TFs take up blocking positions just south of Bataan to bottle up Allied shipping in Manila. Allied shipping will attempt to escape by sailing directly west from Bataan and then head around the west coast of Boreno to reach Java.

CENTRAL PACIFIC:

Guam has fallen to Japan as has Wake Island. There was no 2nd day of attacks by KB at Pearl Harbor......KB just seemed to disappear out of the PBY search radius to the SE of Oahu. Possibly Japan is attempting to position KB in between the Hawaiian Islands and the US west coast to interdict convoys. A-29s and Lightening recon AC are staged out to Hawaii to increase the search radius around the islands.

MALAYA:

The IJA 5th and 18th Divisons are unloading at Khota Bharu along with a couple of NLG units.


BORNEO:

Brunei and Miri are captured by Japan but CL Dragon makes it to Kuching in time to interupt the landings there:

For the first time in the war, Allied shipping losses to IJN subs has been greater than shipping losses to naval bombers. This may be due to the fact that most of the Allied shipping in the South China Sea has been evacuated or has already been sunk. At any rate the ASW/Sub war has really heated up:

Baby KB disappeared from our search screens off the north coast of Borneo a couple of days ago but their Claudes and Kates are still flying missions in the South China Sea. It makes me think that the CVLs are hiding in port at Brunei. Almost 40 Dutch and British level and torpedo bombers are staged into Tarakan to strike the port at Brunei....weather permitting.

SITUATION REPORT: 12-17-41


THE AIR WAR:

Captain R. Thomas, commander of the 61st Bombardment Group, touched down his B-17E on the airfield at Brisbane today. The 61st Bombardment Group is the first USAAF heavy bomber formation to have leapfrogged across the Pacific islands from California to Australia. Several more heavy bomber groups are currently staging their way across the Pacific for eventual deployment in Australia , Java and SE Asia.

I havent discussed the air war very much until now.....the Japanese have been conducting aerial bombardments of Clark, Singapore, Lingayen and Hong Kong among other locations on a daily basis. Except for a few naval bombing missions the Allied level bombers have been quiet.

The USAAF withdrew the 4 B-17 groups that began the war in the Philippines to Java for repair, refitting and upgrading to more plentiful airframes. Three of the B-17 groups were upgraded to LB-30s.

I consider the level 4 airfield at Kuching to be one of the most important early war Japanese objectives. Ownership of the airfield at Kuching alllows Japan to not only complete the interdiction of sea lanes into Singapore but it allows them to project their airpower into the Java Sea. Kuching, although captured several days ago by Japan had never been made operational....perhaps SACORSAIR was repairing base damage there.

Now however, the air war is about to heat up dramatically. Reconnasaince today showed the arrival of at least one fighter daitai and 3 bomber daitais in Kuching.

The USAAF heavy bomber groups in Java were made operational today and were ordered to strike Kuching along with every level bomber available to the RAF in the theatre.

SACORSAIR has developed a "Bermuda Triangle" between Palembang/Singapore/Kuching by stationing 5-6 subs there. These subs have been wreaking havoc with Allied efforts to resupply Singapore. The most prolific of the IJN subs is I-155 stationed 120 miles NE of Palembang in the narrow chokepoint between Singkep and Bangka. I-155 has sunk or damaged over half a dozen Allied ships in the last 3 days despite the presence of multiple Allied ASW TFs and over 60 ASW AC on patrol. After Kuching has been completely neutralized the Allies will send some crack RN DDs on ASW patrol in these dangerous waters.
