How do I back up vehicles?

I would really like to know how to back up a tank without changing the facing. It would sure be nice to just put the thing in reverse and "back up". Instead the machine turns around (and exposes its rear end) and then moves forward in the opposite direction from the way it was facing.

I've tried using the shift key, but that just seems to maintain the turret facing, not the whole tank facing.

People have been requesting this feature for a long time; I seem to remember one of the staff saying it wasn't possible within the game engine.

Thats why you never retreat

No it's not possible in this game.
But check if your tank has a smoke discharger; if yes, by hitting the "D" key you'll have the three hexes in front(compared with the turret orientation of the moment) of yr tank filled with smoke, and this will allow you a safe retreat.
