OT: Reliable Vehicles

For those of us who have to work, having a reliable work vehicle is simply a must. My 1998 Cavalier has done well for me. She's got close to 97, 000 miles on her, is paid off, and I think I can keep her going for well over 100, 000. I've had no major engine troubles (knock on wood) to this point. I keep her oil changed regularly and I'm gonna take her in a bit early for her 100, 000 mile tune up. New spark plugs, all filters replaced, etc.

I'm not a car freak, by any means, but I AM attached to my Baby Blue. She's had some minor issues, but I've babied her and she's been dependable. [;)]

I don't know if all americans will agree with me but for the most part you can get most american cars (nowa days to give you 100,000 miles of headache free driving. Its the accessories that go out and the do cost a lot to repair.
Like, power window motors, automatic door lock units, senors, and the like.

The motor and drive train will be reliable if oil is changed regularly as you have done.

I've got a 2002 GMC Safari van with 158,000 on it. The motor and trasmission is still good but I put a lot of money into keeping the little gadgets up and running.

Buy Ford. Ford makes only 2 kind of cars... REALLY good dependable ones OR the worst lemon on the block. Buy new, and with in a couple months you will know if it is a lemon and can take steps to solve the problem.

One of the tricks I have found with car buying is don't buy the new engine designs! Buy the ones that have been around for a while. For instance I own a Jeep Cherokee Sport with a 4.0L engine. That straight 6 cyl. design has been around since the 20's! No recalls or bugs.
 
Also, before you buy decide what you are going to use the car for. If you need a solid truck to haul a lot of stuff, american is the only way to go (I also own a Dodge 2500 4x4 truck). If you are going to be driving around town most of the time commuting, I think japaneese cars are the way to go. (toyota, honda, nissan...) cheap and dependible (plus for about $3000 you can have the engine and transmission completely replaced!)
 
Another trick, get a print out of the car price from the internet before you go to the dealer. When I bought my dodge, one the car web sites had a new truck listed for 24k, I showed that to the dealer and his priced went from 36k to 29k in about 10 seconds, and that included some nice optionals.

Obviously alot of what I said does not apply to you white. My wife is from the Philipeans, I know how it is there. But on the other hand you could probably go to one of your neighbors and have them build a Mercedes Jeepne for less than I could by a new motor![:D]

Last time i was there I think it was about 20P/litre? Am I close?

IN a Junkheap challenge show they used a 20+ yrs old demolished one and the 2.5 liter diesel started running after 10 seconds. The chassis is next indestructibel too.

We have two vehicles, both with about 110,000 miles on them, and both are going strong.  We intend to keep both for a while.  98 Jeep Cherokee and 97 Geo Prism (Toyota Corolla clone).  Wife and I have always kept our vehicles a long time and have saved a tremendous amount of money in the process that otherwise would have gone to car payments.
