Launch date

Post by christof139 »

NASA needs only $1 billion (American billion, not British billion) to assemble and then launch a spacecraft to find, identify, and chart the ~20,000 asteroids that have the potential to strike Earth or 'only' rip through the atmosphere, and I have volunteered to pilot the spacecraft, as some will be happy to know.

Actually, I am getting near to installing and launching FoF on my new and much faster and advanced compooter, as soon as I get the remaining 2GB of RAM in the mail to max-out at 4GBs.

Then, I will try HW's, but I can't do that for every battle anyway.

I am synchronizing all this with the launch date for the new update/patch. This is wise and brilliant planning on my part, if I must say so myself. Hmmm?

So now you need to know when the launch date for the update/patch is, right? I think that it has become a necessity in your case, don't you? To know just when? [;)]

No, because actually I have never asked and pestered about when the new patch is due, as many others have. [;)]

I am not going to ask and pester about it, but I will observe that I am not sure I am going to have anyone to play the game with once it is finally released.

I have always said it is better to wait for a well done patch than deal with a rushed one. However, waiting on a *patch* to fix a broken game because there is a bunch of enhancements that all need testing at once...well, that isn't so great.

The fixes should be in a patch, or a few of them. The updates in an update, or a few of them. Instead we have a gigantic patch/update that is probably going to have a bunch of problems itself, since it will be so large. Sigh.

They already released one patch that caugt most bugs. Personally I would rather wait for the new upgrade and patch, and whether they were seperate or not I don't have any control over, but it doesn't bug me that much at all, if any.

It's not a matter of life or death etc.

Well the game ain't broke, ok it could be better and indeed will be (I hope and believe) with the new patch but at the moment it is just a tad imballanced towards the CSA in a human vs human game which can be countered by using internal settings. OK it is irritating that you need to heavily bias towards the USA rather than the CSA to get an even game but that is just balance problems, most of us have them friday nights anyway.
The AI is admittedly amusingly incompetant and indeed if the game were historically balanced this would make for a very historically realistic game as a human CSA player vs the computer USA early on, but as is, it is just funny once you get used to the game. As it stands it would make most advance to contact gamers think they are napoleon, ceaser, alexander material.
But even so if you give the pc a decent bonus or play on a high enough level you can have a half decent game even against this version of the AI, just mentally decide not to take advantage of all of it's stupidities.

Yeah you're right. Even J. Caesar had trouble balancing and getting the AI to function halfway decently, just look at Brutus and friends. [X(][8|]

Problem is so many AI's operate simply by the designer giving them less costs for producton and upkeep, and a little bonus to firing etc. in battles. that does not make an AI. AI's are hard to design, since they are basically operating on triggers or pre-scripted moves in a tactical battle. Some AIs are pretty good though.

My problem is my eyeballs having retna burnout and the old prescription bifocals I am wearing. Makes reading things etc. on the screen a headache and real squint and eye bulge bugout. I think I will finally go to the Optometrist tomorrow. [X(][X(]

I bought the game and played through and made some comments about changes...like the drop - out ending. I have not been reading everything - but - is there any word on if they patch will be playable with save game files? I hate to start a new game - the one I finished consumed a goodly part of several weeks - if a patch is coming out soon...or at least some time within reason...

Sadly, that would be impossible. The changes are so extensive that the structures of the save files had to be changed significantly.

Regarding the "drop-out ending," we'll be adding more info that appears at the end of the game, though I don't think it'll make it into public beta. It should be there in the actual "gold" patch, though.

Life or death?

Well, no. Not sure anyone said it was though.

It is, however, a matter of whether there will be anyone actually playing by the time the game is playable though.

Wait until you invest a few dozen hours in a PBEM game and then have one of your armies retreat into a out of supply area before you say that.

Until the new patch I would only practice with the AI.

I'm a long time player of WITP. You think this game has problems in the start, its nothing like WITP. [;)]It has had a half a dozen patches and I have restarted more PBEM games than I care to think about. [:(]But after saying all that I have been rewarded with more enjoyment out of the money spent. [:)][:)]That game has so many great people both playing and supporting it over the last 2 and half years.[&o][&o][&o] I'm not saying it gets frustrating when the engine is stuck with some unrealist actions. [:@]But I love the game. I was a little slow to FOF because I knew about WITP. I love the ACW and have played many different ones.[:D] Can you say Gettysburg by Avolon Hill in 1965.[:D][:D] This game is very playable as is. It has a few quirks[8|] but I have enjoyed it a bunch. If anybody is looking to buy, spend the extra 10.00 to get the boxed edition. The manual alone is worth it. Wish the append was in it though. [8D] I can't wait till the patch/remodel is done. Will practise some and then find somebody to fight. PBEM is the best form of gaming and you find out that maybe you are not Napoleon after all.[:D][:D] This game is 2 in one with the Detailed combat. Once I get a feel for how it plays ie. distances, morale and just the flow of the game.
I know some of you spend hours moving troops to get all the right odds and maxium out of the situation and then a bug bites and you lose all that time. Well people who fought these wars weren't able to calculate all the odds and sometimes they messed up.
Don't dwell on the negatives and just enjoy the GAME this is after all what it is.

Gil R.,

your games have normally a long live expectation and after the gold patch FoF will belong to the top elite of the strategy games for many years.
Therefore my question: Will Western Civilization Software after the gold patch have resources free to work on the naval battles in Crown of Glory, or will it concentrate on new projects?

Thank you for your compliment. I'm pleased to say that we'll be doing both: a new game unrelated to either that is out there, and an expansion for COG that will include both some stuff programmed for FOF that's retrofitted to COG and a greatly enhanced naval game for COG. Both should be out in the second half of 2007. We also hope to do a FOF expansion pack, but no decision on that has been reached yet. It's not impossible for all three to be out in 2007, but knowing how hard programming can be and how many unforeseen issues can arise I'm not going to promise that.

We like to think so. And it's only going to get better when we add some of the features that were programmed for FOF. (Mercifully, this does not include adding bios for all of the generals of the Napoleonic Wars...)

Also, I am in the receipt of 1GB of OCZ Gold 677MHz RAM today, that makes 3GB now, and await the arrival of the 1GB of Kingston 667MHz RAM, to complete my 4GB RAM dream.

I bought 2 x 1GB 667MHz G-Go RAM from FastMemoryMan on Ebay for $129.50 including shipping, and it works well and can operate at 3, 4 or 5 CAS. G-Go uses Samsung and/or Nanya RAM chips I do believe, maybe someting else. It works very well so far.

So, it will be nice to be able to play some HW and have all my games zip along. Hope I can win this 36GB WD Raptor with 16MB Cache on Ebay. I'll know in about 2 hours. There are a lot of the 8MB Cache models available, some 16MB ones, in 36, 74, and 80GB(Dell version of the 74GB), and a few of the new 150GB 16MB Cache Raptors, but the 150GB is expensive.

I can see the MAW (Mex.-Am. War) in its entirety as a game one day, soon I would hope. Neat stuff there. Mexico had a few lightly armored, yes, tinclad type, vessels, one fairly large, but these were repossed by Great britain just before the war started due to non-payment of monies by Mexico. Interesting stuff, with a northern theater and a southern theater and a big area of inbetween and the western theater (Doniphan) and the farwest of California.

Onward and upward through the goop to make my little realm of inconsequence more consequential to me, myself, and I etc. [8|]
