Gazala - Axis OoB (Long)

Battlefront features the power of battalion-level combat in some of this period's most bloody and intense conflicts: Saipan, Market Garden, Novorossisk, and Gazala. Players will have realistic control over their soldiers, with a tactical scale just large enough to make a telling difference in the strategic picture.

Gazala - Axis OoB (Long)

Post by Montbrun »

I would like to preface this post by saying, that, SSG has given us another excellent, high-quality product in Battlefront. The Editor alone (once all of the unknown, "magic" stuff has been clarified) is worth the price. The potential is enormous.

After playing the Gazala Scenario, and perusing the game OoB, I decided to dig out my old notes on the North African Campaign for a comparison. The WWII Mediterranean is definately one of my areas of interest. The following information is a compilation of 30 years of research, including such references as NARA, many various unit histories, Nafziger, Niehorster, the British, Australian, New Zealand, South African, and Indian Official Histories, and especially the excellent four volume "Le Operazioni in Africa Settentrionale" Italian Official History series.

First, here is the Battlefront OoB:

The Battaglione Carri 11. of the “Trieste” Division was organized in the same way as the 8th and 9th Tank Battalions.

General Notes / Comments / Questions:

1) The term and title “Panzergrenadier” was not yet in use during this time period. The Mobile Troops Inspectorate (Panzer Troops) issued an order on 7/5/42, redesignating “Schutzen” regiments to “Panzergrenadier” regiments. This only affected the infantry units under the Mobile Troops Inspectorate’s control (ie – infantry regiments within the panzer divisions). The “armored” panzergrenadier regiments were given the suffix “gp” (gepanzerte), while the motorized regiments had no suffix. On 10/15/42, the Infantry Inspectorate redesignated the “Schutzen” regiments under it’s control to “Grenadier” regiments. On 3/1/43, Heinz Guderian was appointed as the newly created Inspector General of Panzertruppen, being given control over all mobile troops, including the Mobile Troops Inspectorate, Infantry Inspectorate, the Luftwaffe and Waffen SS. The Infantry Divisions (motorized) of the Infantry Inspectorate were redesignated as Panzergrenadier Divisions on 6/23/43. Units created on, or after this date would have the designation “Panzergrenadier.” The individual Grenadier regiments (motorized) of the existing Infantry Divisions (motorized) were not redesignated as Panzergrenadier regiments until 12/1/44.
2) There were no Axis armored infantry units in North Africa until the arrival of the 10th Panzer and HG Divisions in Tunisia in 1943. A very few SdKfz 251/1s arrived early in 1941, but were soon either disabled, or requisitioned for command duties. There were several SdKfz 250/3 leichter Funkpanzerwagen used by Panzerarmee Afrika and DAK in a command capacity. The infantry-recon companies within 3. and 33. Panzeraufklarung Abteilungen were carried by VWs.
3) The Divisione Fanteria 17. "Pavia," Divisione Fanteria 27. "Brescia," and Divisione Fanteria 60. "Sabratha" were “divisione fanteria autotransportabile,” and were NOT motorized. The 47mm ATGs, 81mm Mortars, and artillery regiments within these divisions were motorized, but not the infantry elements. The “autotransportabile” description means that these divisons were structured for the ability to be truck-lifted, but had no organic transport. These units required army-level transport elements to be transported by truck. In addition, the Divisione Motorizzata 102. "Trento" had been stripped of its organic transport in late 1941, in order to completely motorize the units of Corpo d' Armata di' Manovra XX.
4) From 1/42-5/42, the Axis had reorganized their forces to reflect their experiences gained in North Africa. The Germans reorganized with a “Few Men, Many Weapons” policy. The numbers of actual field combat troops was reduced, while the numbers of small-unit support weapons was increased. The Italian “Africa Settentrionale 42” (AS42) reorganization basically de-centralized the divisional support weapon assets. These assets were distributed down to company level throughout the divisions. The biggest changes took place within the 17th “Pavia,” 27th “Brescia,” and 60th “Sabratha” divisions. The infantry battalions within these divisions now contained four companies, each with one Plotone Fanteria, one Plotone Mitraglieri, one Plotone Controaerea, and one Plotone Controcarri. This structure was implemented to reflect the very limited mobility of these units. Each company within the battalion was able to then form a “strongpoint,” meant to hold ground, either during seige situations, or to follow up behind the mobile forces. Obviously, the offensive potential of these units was very limited.
5) The Italian divisional engineer battalions, “Battaglione Genio Misto” (“mixed engineer battalion”), were NOT combat formations. They consisted of two small signals and communications companies, and were not intended for combat. On the other hand, the independent assault engineer battalions, the “Battaglione Guastatori,” were specially trained assault engineer battalions, equipped with flamethrowers and demolition equipment. Also, there were two ad-hoc CV33/35 “Lancia-fiamme A” field conversion flamethrower tank companies consisting of 16 tanks each. Initially, these units assisted the Guastatori units, and were later attached to the 101st “Trieste” Motorized Division for its breaching of the minefields North of Bir Hachiem (lanes known as “Peter” and “Paul”), and for the assault on Bir Hachiem. The Battaglione Genio 34. (a construction engineer unit) also assisted the 101st “Trieste” Motorized Division in this assault.
6) What, exactly, does a “step” represent? If I am intepretting the system correctly, the “step” is purely a function of numbers (strength). The unit specialty (armor, infantry, artillery, etc.) determines the actual combat values used, allowing for “tweaks” by the scenario designer within the editor. It appears, that, for infantry, a “step” represents, more or less, a company. For armor, a platoon. I would just like to see a little clarification on this.

I'll post my notes on the Allied Gazala OoB sometime over the next two weeks.

RE: Gazala - Axis OoB (Long)

Hi Brad,

extensive list you have there- nicely done.  I think a step loss represents a platoon loss in infantry as well.  It is a combination of many things such as disruption and diorganization and actual combat losses wia/kia and missing i presume.  A full strength battalion usually has 9 total (timed replacements and actual steps)-i believe.  A company is often represented as a 2 step unit with 1 timed replacement as well.

Thats how i have been interpreting it anyways- the system is great.  just wish i ould be better at working with the editor.

cheers,
john
