Well Moses and I have been turning the turns around pretty quickly - 5 more days have gone by - pretty much same ole - same ole.

In the Solomons/Papua area we continue to try to suppress PM. Moses conducted some kind of raid on Gili-Gili but mostly offered our Betty's a distraction from bombing PM. Several of his ships were holed, I think one sank later. We now have some Emily's operating from Gili-Gili.

The first pic is of the Java area - the invasion flottia is now formed and moving towards Java. However, our airstrikes have still been pretty much shut down by the weather. I think over the past 10 days, the KB airstrikes have gone in twice and the Landbased air at Banjarmasin maybe 3 times. This has greatly increased the risk to the invasion, but waiting won't necessarily make it better - as we have seen!!! So we go forward. The landings should happen in about 3 days.

And this pic is of CBI.

In Burma we have some forces starting to move towards Akyab and just this turn we inagurated some airstrikes against Akyab. Trying to use just Oscars and Sallys in the first round [:D] but given that we achieved operational surprise, we didn't do too badly ... a few Zeros are on the way, but most of them are tied up in the Java campaign.

In China, two of Moses stacks involved in his central offensive have backed off a hex, well one stack totally, the other has just pulled two of four members back to Ichang. Our bombing campaign against Ichang and Honan has been useful and gotten some damage on both bases. This will hopefully take the edge off his supply situation which would seem to be strained by a full offensive with so many troops. But the big stack that crossed the river West of Wuhan is still sitting omminously still. In the mean time, we've pulled back in the North one hex. But we still want to cut the road North out of Sian to see what kind of reaction that brings. Maybe we are just settling down into a complex stalemate - at least for a while. But we should know in a few turns if he starts advancing in the center or continues to pull back.

Java: 2/18/42

Our landings are finally going in.

For the sack of completeness, our OOB for the landing and cover forces is as follows:

Ships:

KB: 6xCV, 2xCVL, 5xBB, 12xCA, 3xCL, 24 DD

Landing Force: 2xCVE, 2xBB, 3xCL, 14xDD, 14xPG, 8xPC, 12xMSW, 2xAPD

Other Ships: 5xAO, 10xTK, Numerous AP and AK, 6 Submarines nearby.

Military:

38ID, 23IB, 3xTank Rgts, 1 IER, 1 Av Rgt, 1 Spec BF, 12 Army HQ, 1 Mortar Rgt.

Scheme of Maneuver.

We will land at Kragen and the Tank Rgts will pursue off the Beach Head to try to quickly take Madoien for which they have significant prep points. Madoien will then be occupied by the Av Rgt and we will move in some land based planes to control the airspace on the Island, thus relieving KB of this duty.

The Infantry will advance to Soerabaja(for which they have significant prep points) and launch a probing attack. Based on those results we will reinforce. The 56IB and 35IB are near at hand and will be the first reinforcements. The 1&3 YOK are also near at hand if needed.

View of Java - We have gotten ashore and pushed inland with the armor.

23IB is 80% unloaded and will try to start moving inland this turn.
38ID will start to unload as will all other followup troops.

Plan will be for 23IB to move to cover Soerabaja while the other combat troops try to take Madioen.

View of China.

Well Moses troops in Central China have returned to their lairs, so I guess we can declare his first "major offensive" to be over, and yes it was in fact just a "smoke and mirrors" offensive, but it accomplished something. It deflected our attack in the North, causing us to pull back, though we have now reversed direction yet again. But he has sortied a large group to break my road block North of Sian and not much we can do about it. Had we not pulled back, it would have been risky for him to split his forces this way, but he has time now. So the effect of his offensive? To enable nullification of the Sian road block - not sure that was his intention - was that was the effect. Also we may have over-reacted and reinforced the center too much. We will probably start pulling some of this back out now. So at this point the IJA considers China to be stalemated, at least until either side can reinforce significantly. The main constraint on China is supply, the main constraint on Japan is troops.

Here's a view I haven't done yet - the Home Islands. We have spent some valuable PP dollars in releasing a number of the float plane units that start in Japan. These have been strung across two primary convoy routes, the one shown in the picture, which actually feeds both the South Pacific and on into the Celebes area. And the other, not shown, which moves along the China Coast and down to Camh Ranh Bay and beyond. Both of these routes are also supported by small PC/PG/MSW ASW TFs which can prosecute contacts provided by the float planes. Kind of a poor man's solution and it hasn't been seriously challenged yet, but maybe we're seeming the beginnings of some sniffing. Generally in games, once a key route gets figured out by the enemy, I will try to alter the route, though altering the route to Truk would not be too easy. There are more options on the West side of the map.

Supplies at Tokyo? Uh, those were needed somewhere else, sir!!
[:D]

Well, one little "battle" South of the Bonins. An Allied pre-damaged merchantman trying to run back to Pearl from the P.I. Our Patrol Craft were unable to close the range, during a daylight action. Hum, we'll need to talk to the designers about that one!

The 12A will launch a hasty attack against Soerabaja: 38ID, 23IB and 12A .. both infantry formations have 100 prep points for Soerabaja.

Enroute to Soerabaja are the 23rd IER and 1st Mortars. Farther back (just unloaded) is the 56IB. All are prepping for Soerabaja, I think the 56IB is in its 20s. And still over on Borneo is the 35IB also prepping for Soerabaja, we will pick in up in 2-3 days, arrival on Java in a week and then reaching Soerabaja a few days later. So "worst case" we hope to have Soerabaja in 2 weeks. At that point, we can finally release KB for the East.

He seems to have "given up" in Java, we're not getting challenged in the air at all. Nothing flying but recon & patrols (oh and that one beefalow that comes up over Batavia).

Day Air attack on Malang , at 22,66
I've let the "AI" run these Sally's based at Banjarmasin for some time now. Setting them to attack airfields, but letting the AI decide which one. It has done a great job of selecting from among the three targets, Madioen, Soerabaja and Malang and keeping all three of them out of action. All I have to do is decide which ones to rest and which ones to put back on operational status.

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 9

Day Air attack on Port Moresby , at 53,91
At Moresby we're going pretty minimalize in our attacks, trying to keep some damage on the AF ... but trying to rotate and rest the aircrews. The 9 hex missions from Rabaul especially add lots of fatigue and detract lots from Morale.

First we will look at the CBI.

Our major offensive activity is in Burma as we try to complete the campaign by capturing Akyab. We've commited the main force for the 15th Army:

15th Army HQ
33ID
55ID
12 NLF
2 Para

The Army HQ and 33ID have reached Akyab. The 55ID isn't far behind. The 12NLF is walking the trail from Rangoon to provide an overland trace. And the 2nd Para is staging back to Rahaeng in readiness to drop on Akyab to support the attack.

In China, the Giant stack that walked over to Wuhan is now pulling back. There is a 5 unit stack advancing out of Honan, we're keeping our eye on that one.

Next the DEI.

Things are well in hand.

The 12th Army with:

12th Army HQ
38ID
23IB
56IB
23 IER
1 Mort

Should capture Soerabaja tomorrow, thus meeting the pre-requisite for releasing the KB for the East.

And 25th Army with:

25 Army HQ
18ID
2 Tk Rgts

Is unloading at Palembang with a view towards capturing Southeast Sumatra.

In the Northern Oz area ... we are moving in some engineers to Timor. It is most important to get started building up there. The purpose of the invasion of Northern Oz was to buy time for this. So we have a number of BF and CE enroute.

And next we have the Papua/Solomons area.

Our landbased air continues to dominate the area, in part due to the January carrier strike by the USN which left the Lex and Sara knocked out. While Enterprise, Yorktown and Hornet are certainly available, the USN have not ventured a replay of their earlier effort. In the mean time we are using the opportunity to "flood" engineers and BFs into the area.

While our air campaign has been successful to date, we really need yet more bombers to be able to sustain even this level of activity. It takes a looog time to recover from a 35 morale.

The Industry screen. Our Heavy Industry is holding at 50K in the reserve, this is about 3 days!!!

But we're trying to really pump out the planes at this point, so we're riding the edge of what we can produce.

The Naval and Merchant ship points are also right on the edge, we have to deaccelerate or even halt ships on a turn by turn basis to keep the high priority ships moving forward.

Air Production.

As usual this view is fairly misleading since we have a lot of production turned off. In particular most Zero production is off now. We have a decent reserve and we need to spend the HI available where it is needed the most. But we certainly have some "surge" capability for the Zeros.

Also much of the Oscar and Transport production is off right now. We're focusing on Betty's and Sally's. The reserves of each are about 160 for Betty/Nell and about 180 for Sally. This is adequate and production levels are now catching up to attrition, but we do get in some new units, so we are still expanding capacity in this area and that is sucking up the supply and HI we have available.

Not sure what this screen should be called. Might make sense to call it the "Victory Point" screen. But I remind our readers that Moses and I have declared, in our house rules, that we are ignoring victory points for this game. We're playing for "bragging rights"! Which really means we're just trying to have a good game and figure we will know if someone wins or loses without having to add up VP.

Air to Air losses are running at about 2.5 to 1 .. this still isn't the 3:1 I strive for this early in the game, but it is better than the flat 2:1 we were heading towards last month. The initial air battles between KB and the airfields on Java helped boost the ratio in our favor for the month of February.
