Late War Alllied AAR while being way down on Points. Zeta16(a) v. Przemcio231 (j)

Post by Zeta16 »

Well I am starting a late war allied AAR in which the allied player is way down on points. Zeta16, which is me is playing Przemcio231. This was a game that started with the 5/42 start and Przemcio handed me great defeats at PM and then in China. He also took Luganville and Efate making my life tough for years. I did not final get any where near NG until mid to late 43. China has been tough on me as at this point he is doing a number on me and I am trying to help this by taking Ragoon and Mandalay so hopefully supply will get there. In the Pacific I have taken the Marshalls and have moved in to Hollianda and Morarati and I havet took Utlihi. This AAR is going to be about an allied player that is still down 20,000 points in 9/44 and needs to get a ton of points. I will tell you my plans and show you what I am doing in the AAR. Przemcio is to stay out as these are my plans and thoughts on this game. At this point I am playing scared as he has lost no CV's and every time we meet I lose, so that is on my mind. Other than that I feel that I can do what ever I want where ever I want.

So to come in the next few posts are screen shots of the score and other things as well as maps and so forth.

You aren't really in that bad a shape actually...
There are only two kinds of people that understand Marines: Marines and the enemy. Everyone else has a second-hand opinion.

I think you right as I am way behind on base points. I hope to make those up.

OK so he has about *12 CVs, but only *5 carry similar numbers of planes to your CVs, the rest are smaller, brittler, etc. I am figuring that depending on recycling launch dates, you have at least *6 fast carriers and 5 CVLs. My two cents is try the direct clubbing blow (the Soviet approach if you will) coz he's too spread out:

1) arrange what carriers you have into the classical air combat Tfs (2 x CV, 2 x CVL, and escorts to maximise the AAA) I'm thinking you can do 3 or 4 of these, use them to protect your staging post for the below (Marcus is a good anchorage, also I think it gives you some recon coverage of Tokyo et al)

2) pick something thats not near a lot of other Japanese air bases but is important (Iwo Jima is a bit close to Tokyo, but otherwise fits the bill) so he'll fight for it, target it with all the HQs and land forces involved to build up prep points.

3) Its only 1944, so grab Marcus as a staging area, and a way station for airplane replacements, put some CVEs with the VRs there, neutralise the airbase on Iwo with your fast carriers (meaning 99% runway damage) and have replenishment TFs available.

4) send in the air combat TF's followed by your old (expendable) BBs to pound the place, followed by the CVEs and two enormous amphib task forces each carrying a corps of marines (2 divs, tanks, artillery, engineers, combat engineers, a corp HQ, with an army division in reserve) - This will be bloody but you will prevail. Always be rotating one of your air combat TFs back to your staging base - when the KB shows up, and loses a lot of fighters on turn A, your reserve TF can arrive on turn B and give the KB a thorough hosing.

5) early on, ie NOW, form up a huge transport TF in San Fran with AKs full of supplies, and tankers full of fuel. "Do not unload" The object of this TF is to sail slowly over to the staging area while preparations are continuing. The turn the Marines go in it goes in as well set to unload. As well as assisting your assault with a trickle of supplies over the beach it will confuse the defenders. When you take the base it will be one of the best supplied in the Pacific, for a while.  You should also have a smaller TF loaded with crated fighters (mustangs and corsairs) and a big aviation regiment (270 support) to land the turn you fly some Mustangs in from another base. The empty CVEs are also good for this task.

6) Have a corps of 3-4 army divisions plus tanks plus artilley, corps HQ ets available and building to 100% prep for Iwo, once the marines have taken the base and you have moved about 500 Corsairs and Mustangs in there to establish local air supremacy ship the army in and stand down the Marines - who can start prepping for Okinawa.

5) forget about the Philippines or the Marianas and do the above to Okinawa. Do Okinawa initially with the entire US Marine Corps (6 divisions, tank btns, amtrac btns, artillery, HQ's, engineers, Howling Mad Smith, Chesty Puller, the kitchen sink, every thing) landing in one hex.

6) Fire bomb (at night at 5 or 6 thousnad feet) every Japanese city in reach with B24s or B29s or P38s or whatever can reach (which from Okinawa will be lots).

7) once you have his attention use the otherwise unemployed BPF to perform operation Matador (landing on the west coast of Malaya) and see if you can take Singapore back.

You might pick up a few points that way.

Ian, nice little plan, but a little to radical for me as we are trying to play a some what normal game. I have troops prep for my next moves on guam, tinian, Saipan, the PI. About the carreries we have a house rule of only 500 planes in sea hex. He is getting good at only sending his carriers when he has local land air as well so it is hard. In this last invasion of Utilhi he attacked over and over with land air and but a bunch of bombs in cve's, which did not sink, but are ported in Utilhi. he also shot down a bunch of my planes from cv tf, so after I took Utilhi I headed home with my main cv's as I know he will show up with his cv's after land air had made my pilots tired and when I had less planes.

So this turn his cv's show up from either the PI or Japan itself. Since I landed air support and seabees with my landing I thought I could have the field in ok shape to put up fighters to defend the ships landed there. Well I guess they did a poor job as non of my pplanes got up into the air. His cv's showed up a long with land air and put 3 cve's into sea. He also got a few more hits on invaison ships, but all reality it could have been worse. He also attacked my cv tf that was sailing back to Hollandia but these guys got no hits. So he almost got his wish of finding my main cv's tired and low on planes but I knew he would come and mass an all out attack. So I will trade a few cv's for him to lose more trained pilots as he is running out of places in China to train them at this point.

So here is the combat report.

Well on the 30th of September Prz sent a surface force into Utilhi, my tf of old battle wagons meet him. The Mississippi did not make it, but they got soem hits in. Other than that there was little damage to my ships at Utilhi. Still trying to rebulid the airfield at Utilhi. In other news now moving on his troops in Burma, He has 25 units at Tai Gui? and I hope to trap them there or make them retreat towards the trail hex south thus making them usless for a long time. While this is going on I will be attcking towards Bangkok. I hope this makes him move troops out of China or even other parts of the Pacific as I move towards Bangkok then Singapore and other parts East.

Interesting situation Zeta. Curious as to when you lost your CVs and the circumstances. Was it during offensive or defensive operations?

Well lost the first two around PM at the start of the game. Lost a few around Ndini in trying to bulid a base there to jump towards Solomans Islands. Lost a few around Baker Island taking it back. Lost quite a few CVE's in this operation around Utihi. I had to withdraw my cv's as they took a lot of plane loses so he jumps in with his CV's at this point. The base at Utilhi could not recover airfield damage in time and he had a field day with the CVE's as the FM's suck and one hit almost sinks the cve. So he roamed around Utilhi while I was getting more planes and pilots for my CV's and the airfield some how in 3 or 4 turns did not repair with Seebee's there at all. So by the time I come back to play from Hollandia he is long gone. He is good at coming into action when I have started to lose planes from land attacks and thus my numbers get lower.

So some day I will get his carriers, once Utilhi is bulit up better I will control that area as he has lost a lot of planes in the battle so far, but so have I. However, I have a lot units and replacements that are better than what he has. I think I may see his cv's when I move on the southern PI, however he may not be able to replace his loses that fast as training is no harder for him in China. So for the rest of the war he will always show up if and only if he has some sort of an advantage.

"we have a house rule of only 500 planes in sea hex"

At the battle of the Philippine Sea, with 8 CVs and 7 CVLs present, the USN had approximately 945 aircraft 'in  sea hex'. It was the concentration of force which historically enabled Spruance to beat the LBA threat and then the enemy carriers in turn.

Your house rule puts a real crimp on what Mr Churchill called "the proper application of brute force", something central to my "jugular strategy" - which simply skips a couple of steps rather than being completely novel.

It was also very sporting of you not to apply the rule to the Japanese player.

Japanese aircraft
A6M5 Zeke x 151
D4Y Judy x 205
B6N Jill x 9
B7A Grace x 208

= 573 aircraft, and its reasonable to infer less than a 100% sortie rate and zeros at home on cap.

Sea hex meaning CV based I think...the list above are land based I believe.

Lee, I thought Zeta said the KB showed up that turn - all the other air combats seemed to have LBA such as Betties, Franks or Franceses (sp?)  in them so I thought that must have been it.

How quick did you start your "counter offensive"?

Just trying to get a feeling for the "proximate causes" for the deficeincy in CVs which really hampered your ability to counterattack before mid 43.

Also have to say it is an intelligence gathering exersize for my PBEM against Prz[:D]
