OPART3 at 90+% in Task manager

Post by Jeff Norton »

Ralph et al,

We got a lead on what is causing Elmer to be so sluggish and hog a lot of the CPU time? He seems okay for the small games, but the big boys sure make him crawl.

Suggestions?

a better CPU seems to be the only solution, more RAM wouldn't hurt either

Disable non-essential tasks and background services.
De-frag.
Clear memory (I use CCleaner).
What processor do you use? And what RAM do you have?
Mine is P4, 512 Mb of RAM and runs at 4 or 5%.
Also clear out the dust from your harddrive, and ensure the fan has a clear airflow.  I had a noisy fan for months, inspected to find 1/4 of an inch of duct stuck to my duct (air holes). [:(]

I also like to run ENDITALL to close down unnecessary apps before playing any CPU intensive game.

Using an Athlon 3200 (2.4ghz) running 1.5GB DDR ram. Using a SATA HDD, religiously defragged via DiskKeeper.

No bugs I note - I'm too much the geek to allow that.

It worked rather well prior to patching. I'm just concerned...

I updated the pathfinding code a little more. The next patch should be faster again.

by the way, has the game been updated to take advantage of 2 core processors?

Yes and no<g>. I've found an obscure post about a fix to the sound library. We're testing that, and it it works, then I'll work on making the code use hyperthreaded and multiple-core CPUs down the road. There's till a lot I can do about modifying the basic algorithms before I take that step, though, unless I run into some simple cases I can fix.
