Stldiver (allied) vs BlackSunshine (Jpn) BigB Mod, The Sun will set early
Hello Everyone,
This is my second AAR, the first was 2 day turns with Patricks mod and went till June 42 with Japan capitulating due to an early chinese offensive. This time I will be playing BlackSunshine in the BigB Mod, we both started playing 2 months ago in RHS but ran into the cruiser respawn problem and stopped the game until RHS was updated, a couple of weeks ago we restarted RHS, but once again still buggy so no longer wanting to wait, and not wanting a restart we had heard great things about the BigB mod so we jumped right in.
Scenario 192 (Long war Dec 7th surprise, 2 day turns, upgrades can be modified
This will be a joint AAR, so lies, missdirection and outright boasting will be accepted by both parties.
The ground rules are pretty standard.
Max 6 ships in ASW TF
Manchuko garrison must be maintained. Cease-fire in effect.
Japs must stay out of channels and at least 4 hexes away from exits.
Semi-historical invasion beaches on turn 1.
Only beaches/bases may be invaded.
No sub-invasions.
Units with China/Manchuria command must remain in prospective theaters or pay PP
Max 500 AC in TF
Allies may only issue orders to Chinese units and CV TF already at sea on turn 1
We initally had a rule against 1E to 2E, 2E to 4E but BlackSunshine (Japan) wanted to have choices so it dissapeared.
Since we both played a 6 weeks in RHS, we got to see each others styles. So without further adoo.
Rollem Furndock!

Showa rules!
Pearl hit, Manila hit, Singapore hit Holy Crap!
One of the initial problems we had starting this game was we redid the initial turn 4 times trying to get the KB to strike Pearl on Dec 7th, BlackSunshine wasn't sending fighters on escort, when he changed that in all attacks (he was strafing with them) the strikes went as normal.
His email with the turn results started HOLY CRAP!, know an allied player never wants to see that.
He hit all 3 ports, Pearl, Manila, and Singapore with 2 day turns, there were two days of attacks, as KB was parked and the damage was extensive at Pearl with the Arizona going down and all 7 other BB heavily damaged, at Singapore the POW was heavily damaged and BC Repulse sunk. Manila got off lightly with with only 1 sub sunk probably due to high altitude, cap and bad rolls.
Here are the Harbor attacks, Dec 7th, then 8th.

Showa rules!
Lady Lex wades interrupts Wake!
This turn surprisingly went well for the allies, considering its only the 3rd day of the War. In our last game 2 things stood out that BlackSunshine did, he sent his subs outside almost all ports, and into shipping lanes and they started sinkings immediatly so this game I did not rush out of ports unless necessary but reconned to find these buggers, and he sent a lot of landings unsupported which I caught with several surface fleets. This time the subs are out there, but not as widespread (I can't find them all [&:]) and his landings are more supported but not all [;)].
I sent the CA Houston to Legaspi, with a final port of Naga, both these landings appeared to have little protection and that was correct, here is the damage and the transports retreated from Naga, stopping troops and supplies.
I also flew some buffalos off the Lady and flew the wildcats from Wake onto her, figured they would provide better protection.
China is just bombings and probings, he has moved two division into Hong Kong and is bombing it with Nells, Betties and the kitchen sink, thus leaving Manila, Clark and Singapore alone for these two days.

BB's outside of Manila!
Well BlackSunshine since the beginning of the war had parked BB's and CA's outside of Manila, I had sent subs to clear these to no avail,so this time I sent in PT boats, also to no avail.
CA Houston moved out from Naga and hit some AK's and has moved out, aside from that there are various sub attacks and plane strikes, nothing major, the KB continued SW from Johnstone towards Kwaleign area. Lady Lex dissapeared.
On the land front I have made a stand at Alo Star and it holds, Wake Holds, and Hong Kong is getting reduced, greatly aided by the airstrikes.
I defeated a shock attack at Naga, I had sent reinforcements.

1st Jap sub confirmed sunk
Well if my headline is a Japanese sub sank, then there is not a lot out of the normal happening, I will give then a little more detail of his forces.
China
[>:][>:][>:][>:] just general reduction of Hong Kong
PI
He holds the upper half completely with one division spotted, but he paradropped into northern bases so I have no idea if more troops are there.
Southern PI, Naga is now getting more troops as BB force has showed up to protect and bombard, and CA Houston has left the area (otherwise BB force would not have dared venture against the Houston). He tried bombing Clark, but fighters caused disruption of attacks, go figure.
He had a BB group outside Manila since the start of the war.
Burma,
He has claimed Victoria Point, Tavoy, has division moving on Mouleim with support, and he is moving out of Kota Baru, At Alo Star he achieved 1 to 1 then 0 to 1.
DEI.
He has claimed Jolo, and Menado and a CVL group moved in on Kendari then retreated and 5 BB group moved in to bombard, I had pulled ships out the day before. Tiva's wiffed against the BB group.
South and Central Pacific, KB has disapeared between Johnstone and Kwaleign, probably refueling, and wake hold against land bombardments, I believe he is out of supply.
Here is the title results.

Good luck. I will be following this one! .....and that was a nasty PH assault! [8|]

KB sinks CA Pensacola at Tarawa
Cpt Sherwood, In our initial game he did only 2 port attacks and sank almost all shipping including subs at Manila, I to was surprised at 3 but the splitting allowed my subs to survive at Manila and in the long run they will do more then Force Z ever could, although he has ship superiority at the moment.
Aztez, thanks for watching and I am reading yours also [;)]
The KB has shown up at Tarawa and sank the CA Pensacola, who was sitting there letting the crew get a sun tan, Hmm maybe I had her sitting there in our other start, note to self, don't repeat obvious moves.

Besides that little misshap its still pretty quiet so far, another japanese sub went under the waves SS I-155 that was damaged around Java a few days ago.
BlackSunshine landed more troops at wake, know theres 51st Naval, 6th NLF, 61? Nav Gd and 52 Nav gd if I recall correctly, they achieve 1 to 1 on the 1st day and 0 - 1 on the second. This must be thorn to him at this point.
In China he continues to erode Hong Kong, and I have moved units into Canton to stop the flow of supplies but it may be to late.
In the Philipines Naga repulses his attacks and he will need to bring more if he wants to march through this town. Northern PI he is unloaded a large amount of troops at Lingayan, and he is pounding Clark Field.
In Burma Alo Star holds again but I will withdraw the troops this turn, as forces are threatening to surround them from his initial beachhead.

RE: KB sinks CA Pensacola at Tarawa
Stldiver has summed things up fairly well so far. From my perspective a few things stand out from our previous short game together.
He has definately gotten his ASW working in his favor this time around. Our previous game, I was giving him fits with my subs. Now, it's the other way around! Ive had a sub parked south of Singapore for a few days now, and every ship going into and out has been hit pretty hard. That has been my most positive aspect of the sub campaign. Needless to say, I am having to move them around quite a bit, because they keep getting sunk! His subs on the other hand are annoying the crap out of me. IJN ASW is not the greatest, in fact my most precious ASW forces are my MSW's. Of course now he is beginning to mine my ports, so they have more important objectives.
Our previous game, I spread myself way too thinly. It had been awhile since I not only played WITP, but the IJN at that. I had a lot of tranports sunk due to not having enough Surface TF to guard them. This time around, I am doing a little better, but he did capitalize at Legaspi and Naga. No worries, it wasnt as bad as our previous game.
I did have a nice bit of luck at Pearl, but Manilla was a wash. I think I tried to do too much with my first turn here. Should have concentrated everything I had here. Maybe lowered altitudes a bit, most bombers were flying at 15000 feet. However, this is my first time with BigB's mod, so the AA scares me a bit.
Stldiver definately is a pro at ground combat as I learned our first game and am getting a taste of this game.
Wake is definately a thorn in my side, but I shall prevail! Perfect timing with the Lex airstrike. Most supplies for the invasion force were sunk. More have arrived and are arriving, so it's only a matter of time. Although, time is definately on the allied side.
Hong Kong is slowly capitulating. I am throwing everything I have at it, this needs to fall yesterday. I knew he would send troops to Canton as he did the previous game, so reinforcements were already planned for here.
Naga was a big surprise. I did not expect reinforcements here. Most forces which were to land at Lingayen for our main assault on Clark and Manilla have been rerouted to Naga. I still have more than adequate forces at Lingayen, but Naga has to fall soon.
Alor Star was another surprise. I did not expect it to be reinforced as heavily as it was. Although, it's no matter because the invasion force from Khota is moving due West and hopes to cut all troops off from Georgetown north.

Boise and Houston go under
Well it was a sad day for the allied High Command, the CL Boise and CA Houston had hooked up four days ago and had missed an ocean intercept (I guessed wrong on target), and then they went to clear out the entrance to Manila but it was already clear due to Houstons efforts at Naga pulling the BB group there to cover the landings. Thus they sat at Cagyen wonder who to attack next, and noticing Daveo was invaded with BB group but the search planes had spotted supply convoy headed that way they raced to the east of Daveo just off the coast and caught the convoy at night, only damageing one ship, but I had react set and they reacted to Daveo and the BB force, in addition the mini KB was 240 miles west of Daveo and decided to expend some effort on these brave ships, as the sun set both ships slipped under the waves from the mini KB and the BB force, here are their trials [&o]

Wake falls on Dec 21st
Well the japanese finally got the needed supplies into wake and make the 2 to 1 attack to capture the island, the defenders made a heroic stand [&o]
Dec 21st and 22nd were filled with little action, 4 PT boats in southern PI intercept a AK and sink it, Mini KB swings north of Borneo to 200 miles NE of Kuching and bags a couple of AK's.
In the land battles he tries Naga again at 0 to 1 odds, but now has 2 divisisions landed the 56th, 16th plus support NLF's so it won't be holding much longer and there is plenty of shipping around the PI signaling landings there or elsewhere.
In the air he hits some AK's AP near Singapore badly damageing 3 (empty), assorted bombing of bases but nothing significant.
In Burma a tank unit finally reached Moulemein and he has at least one division behind it, the 55th. Moulemein was abandoned 4 days ago. Bombers from Mandalay continually bombard the 55th as it advances.
In China the Japanese have a division and Bde in canton and try to push out the 4 chinese divisions, a 0-1 ensues and 3k casualties to BlackSunshines vaunted troops.
The Japanese troops in Hong Kong also try to break the forts down again and suffer another 0-1, it looks like I have stabalized the bleeding in this area. I will post maps in a few days of the entire theatre when I get home to my computer.
BlackSunshine's advance is slower then our last short game, but so are also his losses. The KB is no where to be found [&:], and many of his divisions are unaccounted for.
What will the coming week bring?

As for the rest of the world, some BB's and over 70 ships showing up at Truk, so I figure Rabaul and PM possibly Noumea are his next big push.
On the economic side he has captured 30k fuel at Daveo, and Brunei will have plenty as I had no time to pull any out, with his initial blockade of Manila Harbor with the BB's. So he has enough in the front line to refuel his battle fleets unfortunatly. The KB is no where to be seen, it would be nice if they sent a postcard for christmas.

Tarawa captured
Dec 25th and 26th are marked by more conquest by the imperial lakeys.
Tarawa is invaded on the 26th and captured by SNLF, nobody was home.
Hong Kongs forts are reduced to 0 on the 25th but even at the end of the day on the 26th, the British still have roofs over their heads.
Naga is not attacked these two days as BlackSunshine figures his troops need a rest and he only bombards, which shows us there are now 3 divisions at Naga, Guess he wants this place. [X(]
Brunei falls, as does Taiping, he has many ships now in the PI area and moving around north Borneo, Jolo finally recieved its Base Force so southern Borneo will be next, he is not leaving me many opportunities to strike his forces.
He is clearing out the Gurilla units in China, the static units make it hard for the Chinese to do much in this theatre untill he pushes them out.
The Japanese also sink a DD off the west coast that had been sent with two others to sink it. The subs on both sides seem to be getting hits.
And it appears maybe 40 plus ships have moved out of Truk, expect the worst soon.

RE: Tarawa captured
Malaya
Nearly all Allied Forces on Malaya have fled the Japanese invaders. Recon flights of Singapore indicate nearly 80k troops. It appears fortress Singapore will be a tough nut to crack.
The northern half of Malaya is now in my hands. Georgetown was the last to fall, and with it, the surrender of a few thousand troups. Khota Baru has become my main airfield here and daily air attacks on allied positions will be the norm from here on out.
Our troops will begin their trek southward after a short breather and the chance to allow the supply trains to catch up.
Burma
Our units have advanced to Moulmein, and Ragoon should be next. The allies continue to fall back to safer positions. It appears they will defend near Mandalay.
Speaking of Mandaly... Allied air attacks have begun.

Expect more of this until I can get some baseforces a little closer. My main AF is at Bangkok, stacked with Lillys. They cant reach that far, so base force units are enroute.
Phillipines
Clark Field is being pounded by Bettys and Nells as my forces move into position. Artillery bombardments are very costly to the allies, and hopefully when the attacks do come we can get good odds.
On the other hand, Naga is not getting any weaker!!! Ive had bombardment TF, Airfield attacks, ground attacks and LCU bombardments on this place and I still cant get good odds. Engineers, HQ and 3 divisions of Japanese infantry are here. Expect some banzai attacks soon!!
Elsewhere all is quiet. My opponent continues to look for KB. I expect it to show up this replay, unless it cant find any targets [;)]

3 US CV's destroy transport group
The highlight of the last day of 1941 is 3 US CV's catching a transport group 120 miles SW of wake. Two days prior we had spotted by a sub at wake ships there, at the same time I had move CV Enterprise, Saratoga and Lexington just North of Wake. Thinking this force was bringing in a base force I move the TF just NE of wake, The TF was actually transporting troops or picked them up from wake, either way they all perished in the anger of 3 US CV's. After the 1st raid it was reported elements of 52 Nav Guard were being rescued, but Alas all ships finally slipped under the waves.

Summary of 1st Month
Well after the first month of war ( the repeat of our first game), I can say BlackSunshine (Jessie) is definatly more hesitant then the first game. I guess he noticed I was not adverse to attacking far flung forces. That being said he has had only two setbacks, Hong Kong and Naga, of which Hong Kong has finally fallen and at Naga he has pulled out on Jan 3 42, so as far as time schedules go, he is pretty much on track, or very little behind.
As far as air losses this is an area he has not pushed me and they are about even, his main line fighters are attacking bases I don't ( or won't) defend and his second string encounters my second string so we end up even (except when nates are in china, I win [:)]).
On the ship front in numbers of ships we are close to even but I have lost the the BC Repulse and BB Arizona, plus CL Boise and CA Houston, other then that pretty much even. The Ships on easterm PI were liberated and escaped to the west coast of North America when the CA Houston came a calling at Naga. Most of the ships at Manilla were bottled up by a BB task force but when they went to protect the transports at Naga from the Houston, they made there getaway across Northern Borneo (vary scary), only a few were caught with the mini KB just on their tails.
As far as Burma, Jessie has closed down most of that and gone all the way north to Rangoon, I have pulled back and not contested. Singapore is becoming a fortress, and Kutching rules the waves as far as shipping goes south of singapore, Kutching's planes will come a callin
In the central Pacific he finally took wake, but had no base force so my 3 CV's swept in and targeted a troop convoy probably the 52 naval guard and an snlf went under, they are now tracking another transport group, so I suspect I have bought myself a couple of weeks here.
The KB is nowhere to be seen but I suspect they cannot let my CV's run amoke in their convoy lanes, so they will be headed there, if not I will run amoke
So in all said, I believe I have had a fair start and my opponent a fair start, nothing major has happened yet to alter the war for either side.
Here is the current scores

RE: Jap ships swing past Singapore
Well the first month of the war has definately not gone according to plan for the Japanese!
The good
Malaya is a proving a bit easier this go around vs Tim. I may have a bit too much force on the peninsula. When I get to Singapore then I guess I will find out. Although the inital defense of Alor Star was a bit tougher than I anticipated, Im disappointed Tim pulled his forces out. I was hoping to trap them. So far, there has been little resistance as I move southward. Even aircraft are strangely absent from this theatre.
Burma is nearly all captured. I had never tried para drops on Victoria Point or Tavoy, and figured what the hell. Needless to say, it worked out nicely. That secured any retreat by allied forces to move northward. Although bombing runs have been started on my resources (which was to be expected) they arent that devastating, yet. AA and support units are being transported to Burma and should be able to slow them somewhat.
The DEI things are going a bit slower, but still nothing to be stressed about. Mandalay was a prime location for a turn 1 invasion. A level 4 airfield will allow me to secure the area from the east. Little to no naval activity is spotted in this area however. Kuching was another primary objective and it fell rather easily. Currently these two bases will be staging areas for further expansion. I am playing very cautiously here, I want to be sure everything is in place before advancing (fuel, supplies, bombers, support). Its been quite sometime since I played as Japan and I just want to be sure Im not forgetting anything.
The Pearl Harbor strike was a good one. Although only 1 BB was actually sunk, the Japanese public is under the impression that more may have in fact been sunk. Whatever happened, the damage was extensive.
Japanese production is going well. Zero production is currently nearly 200 planes per month. Supplies are in great shape. CV's have been accelerated. Oscar production is still a little low, but it is picking up. Everything else looks good here.
The Bad
The conquest of the Phillipines is certainly not going according to plan. I never like to split my forces if I can help it, but this theater you pretty much have to. The Allies can defend the main island from Naga or from Clark/Bataan. They can also do both. So it is inevitable that Japanese forces must land at both ends of the island. The mistake I made, was to actually try 2 seperate landings on the southern side of the island. The landings at Naga got hammered. A lot of losses just coming off the beach hurt my forces. Furthermore, initial recon did not realize the amount of defenders there! So I did not have much prep on the invasion. In fact, I think I initally only hit it with 1 bombardment TF, and that's it.
To make matters worse here, this was one of my few landings which were lightly defended. CA Houston wrecked havok with my landing craft. I had a blockade of Manilla harbor set with a strong Surface TF, but this TF had to leave Manilla and protect the landings. My weak port attack on Manilla certainly played a factor in me maybe holding this blocking force in place a little too long. Had I done more damage here, I would not have worried about it.
China is also going badly. Hong Kong took way too long to fall. Not sure what went wrong here, but I certainly couldnt abandon Canton to make sure it fell. Especially vs Tim. I knew he would invade Canton, and sure enough, he did. Now, I am feeling pressure here.
I am slowly clearing guerillas from our roads. Nearly all Aircraft from the Kuching area have been transferred to 3 main AF here. Bombardments are a daily occurance, so at least when attacks do come, most larger armies are disrupted.
The Ugly
Wake was a disaster. Intial landing forces had their supplies sunk by CV airstrikes. Reinforcements and more supplies were hit by CV, subs and coastal guns! It took a lot of time, effort, casualties and supplies for the defenders to capitulate. However, that was not the end of the disaster! No sir! A few turns ago, I decided I need those forces elsewhere. So, I sent some transports to pick them up. After picking up the first wave, boom! Sunk again by CV's! Now, this CV Tf is wreaking havoc in my supply lines. A lot of losses here. It's not pretty.
I missed a golden opporutnity a few days ago to cause massive damage. My main AF on Malaya, Khota Baru, had been bombarding Jhota constantly for a few weeks. Search planes spotted ships leaving malaya and heading north! Strangely enough, my support forces for Burma were being tranported right behind them! Anyhow, all aircraft on Georgetown and Jhota were switched to Naval attack. I thought to myself, this is going to be good.
But alas! No strike came on day 1. None on day 2. WTF?? So... when I get the turn back I look and see. Nobody is on Naval Seach!!! None of my bombers, recon AC, nothing.. I had neglected to search for them from these bases. Cant attack something you cannot see. Man was I pissed...
And lastly, KB...
Oh glorious KB. I'm sure my opponent is wondering what the heck happened to it? Is he playing the AI? Is it out of fuel. No my friend, it is out there. Unfortunately it is not where you are.
After the 2 day strike on PH, losses were pretty high. It patrolled close to Suva, and then headed to Truk to refuel, and repair it's aircraft. That took about a week of gametime until it was back to 100%.
After this, it began to patrol the seas south of Rabul, back and forth, from Rabul to Noumea, to Suva it went, not a single target of opportunity.
It's location now, is a mystery of course!
Needless to say, I suppose I will have to use KB to force my opponent's hand. Instead of guessing where hisCV are, maybe I should make him come to me
