CVs in port
I am curious if other players move their squadrons (particularly the fighters) off the CV/CVL when it is at port. I know that this is strongly advised not to do this with replacement squadrons.

RE: CVs in port
The only time I ever move air units off carriers is when I disband a unit into the carrier air unit. You can't disband a unit into a carrier air unit while it's on the carrier.

This is highly realistic (and also means the squadrons supplement the local air defense), but the game engine has serious problems with it.

I would remove my squadrons from my CVs, if I weren't afraid I'd suddenly have to pay 348 political points to make them get back on their carrier!

Oh no. At the start of my current game (Dec 8th scenario), I moved the Claudes off of the Ryujo to Palau and upgraded them to A6M2's. I then transfered the F1Tainan Datai to her. The plan was to use the Ryujo immediately and with a full complement of Zero's. By using the F1 Tainan Datai, I was buying time while the Zero's from the upgraded Claude unit repaired. The original unit is now almost completely repaired and in a turn or two, I should be able to transfer the F1 Tainan off and the old Claude unit back onto the Ryujo. Is this going to create problems?

I never moved carrier planes onto restricted bases. It doesn't matter. Recently, I had 4 CVs from KB spontaneously change the command of all their aircraft from independent to Home Defense Force. It took me over a month to gather enough PPs to convert them to something else. I was afraid to use the carriers for fear that the planes wouldn't fly. The thing that bothered me was that none of those carriers had ever sailed to the Home Islands in that game. [:(] (It was your game Ted. I passed up a couple of good opportunities to use KB because of that.)

I have transfered units to bases and back with no problems - but I usually use the original air groups from the CVs or such - never used replenishment groups -- always play Japan and never had any.
I usually leave my air groups somewhere usefull while the CV is undergoing major repairs - no since the effective part of the CV being down 3 months while the ship gets its whole's fixed. I have also noticed the air groups recover morale a lot faster at a base then on the CV - especially when hammered down below 50.

RE: CVs in port
The old bug where carrier groups changed HQs and resized when moved ashore has been addressed (back in the 1.8s somewhere).
Be careful when moving the groups to/from the carriers. If the carrier is at sea, they fly. But if the carrier is docked, they get trucked and will arrive damaged.
It's OK to move a squadron ashore for a while, then move it back. But do NOT put another squadron on the carrier in it's place.
RE: CVs in port
Don,
Just for clarification...I had major damage to a CV. I put the squadrons ashore and sailed the CV back to port where she has now been repaired. Are you saying I should not put anything on her (was planning on using her to ferry a/c to the front) for the long sail to pick up her squadrons?

The game will detect the extra planes on the CV and not be able to properly differentiate them from the CV airgroup. This will probably cause the various groups to resize erratically. If you can endure this, no problem - they will re-resize once the transported groups are off the CV. You can also prevent any resizing during transport by running off accept replacements for ALL the airgroups involved - the carrier's regular squadrons ashore and the transported squadrons.
The basic issue is the desire of the carrier to resize it's air group to match allocations at various times during the war. And a carrier's concept of its aircraft includes the squadrons originally assigned to it (which it perceives as it's CAG) AND any other aircraft which may be aboard it. A 72-plane carrier with a 4-squadron air group will split the 72 capacity between the squadrons in different ways at different time (generally increasing fighters, reducing something else). If it detects FIVE squadrons it get's confused and allocates unexpectedly. If it has a squadron from another carrier onboard, the allocations of the airgroups of the two carriers become interconfused.
No one really likes this, including me, but that is the way it is. And, given the goal of adjusting air group allocations to track historical changes, it seems about the best way.
And Ron: Don't bother - that's the way it is.

I'm playing the AI right now and I was snooping on the Japanese. I noticed all the planes on the KB carriers were set to Home Defense Force. They flew OK. Or at least that's the report from my bases pounded flat by cyclone KB.

Thanks for the reply Don. That's very good information to know.
Mostly I just wanted to add the fighters to the air field so they could get in a little training and participate in CAP if needed.

Now, seriously, thanks for the information Don. I'd been keeping my squadrons on the carriers because of the resizing deal, and hadn't paid close enough attention to the fix list (one of those was really long, thanks again).
I had always preferred to fly them ashore whenever the fleet was in major port (you're not going to fly them all into the local base at, say, Eniwetok because all of the carrier aircraft will overload the base - but it's smart to base most of the fighters ashore when the fleet's in port. I guess the trick is to note which squadron belongs on which carrier before sending them ashore.
EDIT: Ron, just joshing ya! When are you boarding ship for the Aegean?

Maybe he has the load problem and can't get more than 30% of his supplies loaded.[:D]

RE: CVs in port
They will fly from their CVs ok, but will they divert to a non restricted base if their CV is damaged? Or will they splash down in the bay?

I think when the carrier planes go ashore now, they continue to list which carrier they are assigned to. At least that is what I noticed when I was playing around with it.

I had a similar experience. The planes flew to a nearby base after they could not land on their CV. Problem is they would not transfer to another CV so they are land based from here on out i guess.
RE: CVs in port
In my game vs BlackSunshine, BigB Mod, Wake held out early and the Lexington swept by the island, as it approached I flew off the Buffalo's to Johnston Island and flew on the Wildcats from Wake ( I figured 12 Wildcats were better then 22 Buffalo's), anyway I have since swapped off the Wildcats to another base and flew the Buffalo's back on board, to no detrimant.
Showa rules!
