Here's a thought on a possible counter-tactic.

try placing the Malta bombers on very high search % when set to naval attack (or if not attacking, place on high level naval search) The game routines do allow for bombers (and it would appear patrol aircraft) being "away" from a base when it is attacked. This is why there are usually few ground casualties if airbases exchange mutual bombing strikes within a turn.

This might help reduce the bomber losses.
