ooh ,, very very useful info from sigint for once !

42nd Division is loaded on AK,India Maru moving to Marcus Island.

time to move in the CV's first methinks and leave the CVL's covering the transports.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/23/43

Well lets start for a change with ground combat information. 1st up Lae is a complete wasteland
6 japanese units have a grand total of 393 men left there ! i would have expected some sort
of defence for such an important base. Complete allied sledgehammer vs peanut scenario.

Ground combat at Lae

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 3525 troops, 70 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1477

Defending force 393 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 8

Japanese ground losses:
30 casualties reported

Shock attack regardless tomorrow then move in the AV support and engineers (currently waiting
on ship at buma ).

Kai island is looking very very tenous at best. have to send in the bombers tomorrow (they have been
on anti shipping to deter any japanese counter attack).

Tulagi next up. Several waves of land based betties with tony and tojo escort sailed into get
badly clobbered by the lightnings on cover. Not fooled by the nearby CVL they attacked the
main landing force. One torpedo hit the BB Oaklahoma but all other raids were either turned back
or shattered by the combined P38's and leaky F6's from the CVL next door.

Day Air attack on TF, near Tulagi at 68,96

Japanese aircraft
A6M5 Zeke x 3
G4M1 Betty x 23

Allied aircraft losses
P-38J Lightning: 2 damaged

Allied Ships
BB Oklahoma, Torpedo hits 1 Damage unknown so far

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x G4M2 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet

Whoops cut and deleted the tulagi combat reports but allies have what appears to be a 6-1
advantage . artillery tomorrow to test the theory and allow more supply to land.

On the submarine front, Japanese subs sighted for the forst time for a while. where ? 60 and 120
miles from Wake (NW). just where the transports and escorting warships (inc a 6 ship dedicated
ASW group) . both subs were sunk but not before hitting a DD and giving joe vital info.

Sub attack at 67,57

Japanese Ships
TK Ayagiri Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage Fuel burning message . followed by sinking

Allied Ships
SS Rock

With the CVE's out of the way at Lae , japanese LBA tried for the landing ships . LRCAP proved
its value even if its fatigued.

Allied Ships

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x G4M2 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet

Meanwhile japanese bombers and zeros were sighted over the landing beaches at Kai island.
Much to the suprise of the australian pilots the zeros dived for the ships and allowed the relatively
rookie aussie pilots a chance to down a few along with most of the bombers ( i think joe forgot to
set thier orders)

Day Air attack on TF, near Kai Island at 39,78

Japanese aircraft
A6M3a Zero x 19

Allied aircraft

Allied Ships
DD Bagley
AK Steel Traveler
AK Cape Isabel

Nice going boys ! ..

Speaking of forgetting to re-set orders the chinese AF went for ports againt this turn.
fortunately Joe forgot to set CAP so no harm done and one attack did very very well indeed
damaging 3 ASW ships in the critical 'slot' between the phillipines and formosa.

Day Air attack on Pescadores , at 47,43

Allied aircraft
B-25J Mitchell x 13

Allied aircraft losses
B-25J Mitchell: 3 damaged

Japanese Ships
MSW W.18, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
PC Ch 1, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
MSW W.7, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
8 x B-25J Mitchell bombing at 6000 feet
5 x B-25J Mitchell bombing at 6000 feet

Over in sumatra speculative fighter sweeps encountered nothing over malaya but palembang
got a vist from some P38's on day 2 and a few zeroes were downed for no loss.

Day Air attack on Palembang , at 20,55

Japanese aircraft
A6M5 Zeke x 20

Allied aircraft
Catalina I x 1
P-38J Lightning x 18

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M5 Zeke: 6 destroyed, 2 damaged

Allied planese were otherwise occupied when japan struck back at Kulagi (sumatra) where the
barracudas had come from last turn. Cannot say in all honesty i was expecting raids in this
proportion, but at least the lack of recent recon prevented truly bad damage. and the barracudas
had been moved to safety in port blair.

Thsi is the hardest of 3 attacks over 2 days .

Day Air attack on Bankha , at 20,47

Japanese aircraft
D3A Val x 27
B5N Kate x 48
G4M1 Betty x 52
Ki-43-IIa Oscar x 32

G4M1 Betty: 3 damaged

Allied aircraft losses

Allied ground losses:
149 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Airbase hits 7
Airbase supply hits 7
Runway hits 32

Thats all for today folks ! bye bye

Image

EDIT .. just did the orders phase ..

BAD NEWS ... looks like sigint picked up the japanese division actually unloading at marcus island !
several jap ak's spotted by sub and the troops jumped to 35k (F^%^ W^& sigint officer). CV's
sent ahead though might catch some tomorrow.

Augustus, wish i'd taken your advice and stayed around to train up a bit, but this was almost
unforseeably bad timing.

Operation GONAD was being seriously slowed down by 2 low endurance minesweepers .. dropped like a
hot brick ..

Good News

Oaklahoma is 23 sys . so will remain with the landing force at tulagi while more LR cap is sent
from tassaforonga. Lae LR CAP has had to be depleted dut to severe fatigue and from the looks of it
10 pilot casualties from over tired landings.

No men lost suggests that these were almost empty , BUT if they were carrying supply thats
definately gone down as its the last to unload. fingers crossed the unit will be
horribly disrupted and low morale from getting sunk [;)]

It appears that japan has sent up some sort of TF to intercept the transports, with the supply
laden AK's lagging behind this is a potential disaster. Cv's shifted to try and scare off the
japanese. One F6 group sent to LRCAP Marcus to prevent long range jap bombers from hitting the
unloading transports. Stupid loading routine sent up a huge AK force with about 3 engineers
and one tank loaded ! 99% empty ! .. argh .. fortunately a big supply convoy finished unloading
at wake and is ordered to pick up the 2 missed divisions , tanks and more supply (will take time
to load though) SO IF the assault/unload goes badly there is more men i can funnel in. Unless
the jap CV's hit wake (lots of CAP just in case).

Japanese battleships suprise and sink several barges unloading supply at Kai island , while the
allied air flattens the japanese defenders , japanese bombardment group does the same for
the poor old dutch landed here. doubt i can take kai with whats here but might as well try.

Intresting. It seems that those Japanese actually managed to off load their "cargo".

Looking at the bright side of things you propably managed to burn a lot of their supplies by judging that he had still troops onboard!

Good job! [:)]

Aztez - it gets a LOT better than that. they were off-loading base forces ? 10 of the buggers were on
Marcus and the only combat unit a naval guard (9th iirc). It's been captured by the 1st wave of
troops ! .. cant believe it .

And it gets better and better, Frankly i have never seen a turn like this one before, could not
have possibly been better ..

AS a side note i am no longer ever going to believe signals intelligence its broken badly imo.
No division on marcus and none unloading. Maybe i headed off the transport TF BUT there should have
been one there anyway .. stupid game [:'(]

Apologies for the lazy cut and paste but its been a moumental turn for action. when i get the
turn back from Joe I'll post air losses. they should be massively in the allied favour.

I wonder if iwo jima and its neighbour are as badly garrisoned as wake and marcus ? Maybe Joe
put too much into the marshalls and gilberts and forgot the inner defences ?

Now you did cause a lot of harm to Joe! [:-][:-]

What is the next step? ...South Pacific advance? Through Central Pacific? Burma? ...or all of them together? [:D]

Hmm. It seems I'am somewhat impatient and greedy! [;)]

South pacific .. nah it'll wither on the vine (i will take eniwetok 1st though).

Central pacific i think next, if he neglected marcus so badly ( its a 1/1 AF/Port !).
Iwo jima is s definate possibility. will need to sort out the mess at marcus 1st though.

Burma ? .. not yet .. sumatra 1st as i think he's over comitted badly in malaya ( all the
bases are heavily manned ).

not much to do orders wise this turn , pretty much all theatres are in motion to some extent
or another.

air losses as promised .. looking good for the allies !

Those numbers are devastating! [X(] ...hopefully these are from our 1st turn! [:D][;)] (Are you sure you ran the Joe's combat replay)

Your future plans sound reasonable so go for it I say. I think it is best to commit to a plan and stick to it.

Intresting days ahead.

To put it in short terms ---> You are in trouble over at DEI!!! [:'(]

Ouch! I can understand that it is hard to recon these bases so far in the frontline.

Good luck! I have an feeling you are going to need it! [:(]

So did I to be honest, funny how things turned out too. Mis move of one brit CV task force
caused no end of hurt to japan. the CV's hit baby KB from a coastal hex and won ! ok the
lop sided a2a rules played a large part but joe's excessive CAP level really cont him big time.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/07/43

We will just look at the area surrounding operation GONAD for todays update.

Piccie shows the placements of the relevant forces. Allied CV's had been told to move back
2 hexes and provide LR CAP over the beaches. looks like i forgot to cancel the follow TF order
for one of them and they strayed into the invasion beach rather fortuioutsly.[:D]

Anyway lets start at the beginning .. Allied BB's shell the beaches on do not retire orders
(v v important for what happened later on ).

The japanese response was a large virtually unescorted strike. not sure wether the other CV's and
CVL's sent in LR CAP as they had been ordered (looks like they didnt) as thier hex was rained out
for the entire day.

Utterly lop sided ! i admit this is the game engine at work but the allied had 2 brit CV's and
2 US CVL's in the hex so definately not over stacked . the lack of escort really hurt japan.
some should have leaked through and i'd understand i if Joe was 'pissed off' with the result.
I would have been .

Come the night turn mid way through the 2 days. V heavy japanese surface raider group led by
an absolute nut case ( agressive beyone words) trid to get to the landing beaches and mutual

The raiders then withdrew ( not sure where but i suspect batavia ) . Tone looks badly damaged
but the mushashi is just scratched. That was a few combat screens to behold.

Many heavily damaged and flooding CL's and esp DD's were auto sent back to colombo. AS i seriously
doubt they will survive the journey. stopped the retreat and sent back to toelbakthingy in
anticipation
of the capture of the level 3 port (thier only hope as far as i can tell). BB Royal soverign
is among the worst damaged and probably wont survive the two days at sea . Still they were
old and did save the invasion so hats off the ramilles and royal soverign. [:)]

Just a passing mention of other places :-

Pacific one US CV TF stayed put near iwo jima and while sendign several more AK's down
was suprised at night by a desperate japanese gamble. (i had intended these to retire and

Lets hope KB full isnt coming to call. !

allied shock attack hopefully will open the port . and then can fly in massed LBA fighters
so next turn is the dodgy one .. split the allied CV's so we are not all stacked and giving
uber cap .. seems fairer to me . Joe and I are discussing max stacking limits right now.

phew what a turn ! .. lots more happened too .. but thats secondary to this !

Phew ! .. the CV group decided to set sail back to colombo and the next day the convoys
were utterly unprotected . fortunately japanese bombers came in drip and drabs and didnt
hit anything of note bar a MSW PG and several empty AK's.

bombers from singapore found and murdered an empty troop transport convoy that should never
have left tokloebatong <sp> im sure i set patrol do not retire. anyhoo the up side is they
were empty.

Day Air attack on TF at 18,48

Victims are

1) Jap tanker convoy at batavia wiped out
2) 3 jap tankers fleeing batavia sunk
3) Allied sub and air attacks at palembang sink or damage about 8 AK's
4) BB kongo and haruna venture into range of the CVE group that had advanced one hex
forward to draw any CV attacks away from the fellt carriers.

Japanese Ships
BB Mutsu, Torpedo hits 2, on fire
BB Kongo, Torpedo hits 1, on fire Further attacks score more hits .. badly damaged imo.

Given that teklobang is only a level 1 AF i can only fly in max 50 fighters .. so 3 groups of
thunderbolt 2's (48) are now on CAP over the port. Thankfully its a level 3 so all damaged
ships have been ordered to retire to here and disband. The CV's will pull back a bit and cover the
tanker convoy thats been at sea waiting for the capture of the base. I dont have the 100's of
seebees avalable in the pacific so cant rush the AF building so this area will be a target
for japan for quite some time i think . CVE group will head to the port to provide a bit more
CAP (even though its depleted a bit from being in a coastal hex).

more to come in the next 2 posts.

Telobang fell to massed allied assaults, I had hoped to not land the tanks on a contested
port as they are prepped for palembang but there seemed to be a need for them. apparently not
given screen capture and odds achieved but i had no idea of fort levels and there are still several
undanaged TK and all the engineer units to unload peacefully.

Ground combat at Teloekbetoeng

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 41045 troops, 432 guns, 327 vehicles, Assault Value = 985

l its better to have overkill than fail miserably in enemy territory.

The final elemets have been cleared off Kai island and gasmata fell to the marines. I'll need to
do a bit of ship juggleing in the SW Pacific as there has been zero threat from LBA in rabaul or
from bases further along the New guinea coast.

Ground combat at Gasmata

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 13630 troops, 137 guns, 14 vehicles, Assault Value = 374

Defending force 833 troops, 9 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 41

Allied max assault: 682 - adjusted assault: 564

Japanese max defense: 21 - adjusted defense: 4

Allied assault odds: 141 to 1 (fort level 0) Huzzah !

Allied forces CAPTURE Gasmata base !!!

Japanese ground losses:
267 casualties reported
Guns lost 5

Allied ground losses:
96 casualties reported
Guns lost 2
Vehicles lost 1

Next up here is sag sag .. then further along the NG coast. medan looks possible and some
reserve infantry is prepping for it as we speak (and have been for a while).

Darn good fun right about now , and joe got revenge for baby KB too.

In the pacific the US CV's and escorts suck up 80% of the fuel at wake so 6 need to get to midway
for a top up. these ships drink fuel like a kid in a cola shop ! .. im bringing more forward
but i admit i was suprised at the thirst of the main CV groups.

So thats it for today, was tempted to post the entire combat reports but a lot of it was
fluff. However its hats off to the silent service sinking 6 AK's 2 TKS and a DD in 2 days
around saipan and iwo jima primarily.

China update. We have rescued the corps cut off in russia and japan has decide to retire from the
siege at ichang ( i was flying in men using dakoyas .. move 2 entire corps unmolested ). Dont
want to advertise the fact that about 80 dakotas are operating from chungking and have made
china a far more flexible theatre. Back in Burma allied air planners have accumulated 4 wings
of 64 commando transport a/c to fly supply in large quantities to china.

Lets hope tomorrow is as much fun as today !

Humm .. given the location i suspect he may be trying to raid the PH-Wake shipping .. Fortunately
for me 6 allied CV's are 1-2 days out from midway and once refuelled can go hunting. 4 CV's are
avalable in Wake and will be formed up just in case .

The mess at sumatra .. we have plenty of supply , as well as 100K
more in the port (disbanded) Cv's will retire while LRCAP covers
the last approach of the tankers. many merchants sent home via the
west map edge to avoid singapore.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/15/43

Boy oh boy its hotting up all over the place .. lets run through the combat 1st though then some plans.

1st of many sub attacks japan is rushing men into the bonins and saipan area. jap engineers
were heavily damaged going to iwo jima (the AP carring them was sunk 120 miles off shore [:D].

I'm going in chronological order here so bear with me .. a LOT has been going on ..

significantly i closed down singapore and caught many many a/c on the ground too. I have been
shying away from massed 4e bomber raids as i feel they are a-historical really BUT it's the
only tool i have to close singapore which has been a real thorn in the allied side . not
anymore [;)]

with AAA batteries , also allied CAP slashed trough the escorts but many bombers did get through
in the end .. lucky escape me thinks .

Well that was the action . japan is rushing men to the bonins and mariannas .. 3 US CV's will raid
the bonin shipping then retire as i dont want to get caught by the jap carriers and iwo jima
at leval 1 AF and bonin jima at level 2 do not pose any serious threat .

The main carrier fleets swept east of johnson island and found nowt, must have been a jap ruse
as no sightings at all round here today , they will retire to wake and then lead the invasion
on iwo jima .. i'm sending recon to bonin jima in an attempt to make joe place more men here
while i prep for iwo jima.

4th USA marines attived at the west coast with 4 tank units (one amphib) and combat engineers.
I'm prepping them for eniwetok along with one USA cavalry unit at wake . for an operation
tentatively called "shut that door" it'll close down the SW Pac and then japan can rot in the
gilberts and marshalls.

North pacific invasion of paramushiro is now all 100% prepped by everythig in north pac command.
amphib HQ and AGC waiting at kiska. I'll need to shift up the centpac combat transports for this
operation come April (end of winter 4x losses i think, i'll check on it when we get closer in
date. ) Paramushira looks wakly held with 12k men so far .. I'm sure japan can send in more
but i'm pretty sure joe is focused on cent pac and the DEI for now .

Up in burma operation "backdoor" (new to you) is progressing well 2-3 days before Raheng gets
hit with a v v large but unprepped hammer. I have moved across the main burma army since japan
left the contested hex north of moulmein (big mistake imo). the Tavoy invasion force is now
holding that hex (its big too). This could blow open the entire back door into Thailand and the
rails line leads like an arrow to bangkok .. no messy invasions needed either .

P>S Wrote this while the forums were down , lucky email from joe alerted me to i cut n paste
without him i wouldnt have done it twice . so say a little thanks to Joe for the report [8D]

RE: 43 - The Mouse bites back. Rob vs Littlejoe 43+

Post by Rob Brennan UK »

Been a while since a report as on the 17th and 18th of December KB appeared and hit tokleobang port.
Joe imo had far too high a CAP % and few escorts flew in. the creame of japanese naval aviation
bombers died in droves to the jugs and spits who are very highly experienced by now. Joe wanted
a few days to mull things over and the combat report was lost due to overwrites on the japan
game.

Summary for the 17th and 18th .

1) KB appeared and lost its bomber crews, Joe wasnt happy about that and i understand.
However POW took 2 more torpedo hits and is in a very bad way, probably will not sink
but she is listing hard and needs the services of repair ships (which i dont have here).

2) american 3 CV raid on the jimas sank many AK's and a few tankers unloading over iwo jima.

3) Operation backdoor was delayed till the 19th as the lead element slowed down. (see later).

4) subs as per usual decimated japanese shipping around the jimas and the Mariannas.

so now to todays resumed game .. good news and bad news in equally large doses.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/19/43

The very vulnerable tanker convoy unloading at teklobang was hit by japanese surface ships on a
bombardment run .. they were almost empty and 1 day later would have left for home. they had
avoided mis directed anti shipping (going for the port) and were unlucky to have been caught.

Ouch ! 4 tankers will run for it .. one damaged one will try and get flooding down 1st.

I am also sending out the 'pumped' fleet elements BAR POW, back to colombo for
needed repairs (and upgrades). The fleet carriers are in one case almost home
to colombo. the other TF is languishing with no fuel about 600 miles away from port
and no oilers available to help out (limping home).

Fortunately the bombardment was pathetic. humm slight dilemma in that i have another
re-inforcement TF 600 miles out in the indian ocean . should it be sent to dock or wait
till i can improve the surface defences ?

OK .. plans

US CV's will cover iwo and bonin jima and prevent any more japanese shipping coning here.
with most of KB bomberless in the DEI and neither base able to take torp planes i have little
worries. transports ordered to gather t marcus for the invasion troops.

speaking of invasions, Bankha invasion will be launched tomorrow under LBA and 3 CVE's. will
take more than 2 days to get there so no action next 2 days expected unless japan interferes with
LBA.

Hopefully Lunga will finally crumble next 2 days too. as this whole solomns campaign is more
of a dirversion than anything else there should be a nice haul of troops. Humm maybe not
so much a diversion for much longer. I'll secure Munda for the sake of argument. then maybe
dash NE to ndini island .. with that and eniwetok the japanese SW Pacific is 100% closed to all
bar subs and LR transport planes.

Nice job! You should now have an firm foothold at Solomons. Basically meaning that Joe is about to lose this area.

Amphibitous troops are embarked to Iwo Jima? ...or you just satisfied with blockade at the moment.

Waiting for the attendant supply to load up at wake 1st . AP's and LST heading to marcus as we speak (will arrive next turn (marcus being a size 2 port will take a while to load up the men , so thats why we load supply at wake and catch up with the men at marcus.

Looks like Joe didn't fall for my recon ruse over bonin jima and iwo has double the number of units (bah im prepping for iwo). still i might have enough to force the issue either way ..

Joe admitted to sending a LOT more men to the burma borders and that why the pacific was so weak (palembang has definately been upped too)

Spotted a potential allied death trap at raheng IF Joe drives up from moulmein (30 units listed here) so we are retiring from Raheng just in case. as worst case scenario he can roll up the entirity of burma while the allies rot in raheng with only a trail for supply.

Brave sir robin is running from this one .

Looks like burma/malaya might not be 'invadeable' right now . so will pull men out and defend the border and transfer them for a Java venture and reinforce the drive on palembang.
