Text "Bugs" Eratta

Post by LeBlaque »

Long time lurker, first time purhaser and poster of your excellent FoF game. Started on BASIC to learn the game and actually have READ the manual. A few things that are not jiving:

These "bugs" might be classifed as "text errors" that need to be rectified.

1) In the City Detail Screen Mass. is spelled incorrectly. Also there are a few provinces which have no Governor (particularly river provinces) though others reference a governor.

2) In the manual page 45 it indicates cities act as a Fort II and can hold 4 brigades but I as well as the AI have placed a Divsion in a city (5 brigades). Don't know if it is a text error or a game error.

3) In the manual page 44 it indicates, "Units in a fort participate in battles... (they) do not retreat to a nearby province if the battle is lost, but instead retreat back into the fort." Whereas on page 63 Section 3.1.4 it says, "However, if the player loses the combat, they will retreat from the province with the other forces, abandoning the city or fort they came from." Essentially, I have not yet seen which of these two "rules" works, but it is clearly a contradiction that needs to be addressed in some kind of patch text update.

If these are valuable, I'll continue to post as I find.

BTW, how is a screen shot done and where is the file saved?

In my games, if i rally the garrison to battle and lose, they retreat from the province. so i usually do not use the garrison unless I KNOW I will win.

The rules concerning forts/garrisons relate to two distinct groups so there is no contradiction in practice. Fort garrisons automatically join a battle and survivors return to the forts if a battle is lost ( unless they are totally eliminated by surrendering). With a city garrison however you choose whether it joins the battle (the rally garrison option) but unlike the fort units it retreats from the province if the battle is lost. For this reason I invariably leave the city garrison in place although I like to decide each time so do not turn the option possibility off.

I just checked the data file and in there the state is spelled "Massachusetts" and has the abbreviation MA. That seems right to me. How is it spelled in the screen you're looking at?

Some provinces may have no governor. Which provinces are you seeing this in, which scenario, and at what point in the game?

Ironclad's explanation for 3 is correct; there is a difference between garrisons called out of cities and garrisons called out of forts, and a difference between regular battles in a province and attacks on forts in the province.

Thanks for the feedback.

In the game code cities are specified to be able to hold 5, but I think I'll change it to 4 to match what the manual says.

I'm playing the first scenario (general) and the issues with governors appears on the very first turn.

Select the City Detail button from Main Screen and at the top center display w. left/right arrows it says: Boston Massachusets (with one "T").

Regarding this list on the City Detail, I might suggest some additional consistency in display. By example, Augusta, ME/Augusta ME is displayed but most other displays, such as Annapolis/Annapolis, have no State designation. Although my geography is pretty good, I preferred the Augusta, ME display...

Regarding using this same display and using the arrows to bring up governors in upper right corner, the following DO NOT have governors: Jefferson City/Lower Missouri R.; St. Louis/Missouri Miss. R.; and Washington/Potomac River. I thought this issue was related to river provinces, but other river provinces DO have a governor.

In regard to retreating to forts/cities, thanks for the clarification on how it works. However, the manual is still in error as on page 66 it says, "abandon the City AND FORT (emphasis mine)." Was this the orginal intent? Conversely, despite the way it works now, should city's be abandoned if forces have to retreat? I would think forces would ALSO retreat back to the City (like a fort) as that resource is far too valuable to abandon and it does offer some defensive benefits. Although WWII is "more my war," there were several reasons Bastogne was selected to be DEFENDED in the Battle of the Bulge-- one being a city can be defended more effectively than "open ground." I don't know if this latter comment should go on the wish list or not....

Still could use a link or brief description on how to take screen shots/where saved so I can add some visuals in future, as necessary.

Augusta is special because there are two Augusta's in the game (ME and GA).

Missouri does not start with a governor (the situation in Missouri was complicated at the start of the war).  Potomac River does not have a governor, though we considered adding Abe Lincoln to the governors list, in the end we decided too many people would freak-out if Lincoln appeared in something called a governors list.

The statement in the manual (I see it on page 63) is not quite right; garrisons are only rallied from cities using this option.  Fort garrisons automatically join any battle in the province and automatically return to their forts (unless it's a successful attack on the fort) when the battle is over.

If you lose the battle the troops retreat into their forts?
I haven't seen this yet, but it did worry me that you had no control over the garrison of forts fighting. I thought the "Always Rally Garrision" would apply to the forts, but it only applies to the cities.

About changing the strength a city can hold, I would go the other way and increase it to six brigades so that a full CSA division can be sit in a city.
