AAR Lagavulin (JA) vs Undeecovergeek (Allied)
Hi all - welcome to the AAR for my game vs Undercovergeek. Scenario 15, no particular house rules although I have promised to make a reasonably historical turn 1 for start the Japanese - I will only attack areas the Japanese did in reality although I might not stick to exactly historical bases. Undercovergeek has promised not to read this so advice is welcome and ou will be seeing some of my speculative thinking between turns. One thing I don’t plan to post is a lot of actual pasted in combat results - I never read these is other AARs myself, what I like to see is the overall flow of the campaign plus the highlights.
This is my first PBEM game so I plan to keep the Japanese strategy simple but aggressive. I don't feel it likely that Japan can win a long war so I am gearing up for a short one and trying for an automatic victory.
So Shinano will be cancelled and the first 3 Unryus accelerated - with a little investment in shipbuilding I might get these in time to be useful in 1943. Aircraft production is going to get "rationalised" a bit. Myrt and grace r&d will get cancelled and redirected into current production, George r&d gets reduced. Ida, various transports and some of the babs production will be switched to more usefule types - Zeros,Kates Vals and Oscars, the babs are swapped for Dinahs. No increases to aircraft production capacity yet, I will look at it in early 1942 once the military and supply situation takes shape. Alongside the regular changes to Claudes and Nates this should give me decent production of current types through 1942.
Although I intend to stick reasonably closely to the historical attack there will be some changes. I promised Undercovergeek only to attack areas included in the initial Japanese attack and I will stick to this but some bases will change and one or two will be added but only in areas where I am already on the offensive:
Malaya
I plan to on a more aggressive attack here then the historical first turn. One division to Mersing with an additional convoy of support troops, tanks, engineers and artillery. One Division to Kuantan with an additional brigade convoyed from Singapore, plus support troops, tanks, engineers and artillery. IG and Tanks march overland via Songkia. As soon as I have Kuantan and Mersing aircraft will move in from Singapore and Phnom Pen.
With a little luck Kuantan will fall fairly quickly and I can march a division across to the west side of Malaya hopefully causing his northern forces to fall back - or even better cutting them of completely. To ensure Kuantan falls quickly I am bring the 4 slowest IJN battleships down from the Home Island for bombardment duties and bringing the min -kb into the theatre. I wont use these agressivly turn 1 as that would be a little ahistoric. They will meet us in the south china sea, and the mini KB will swap most its Cluades for one of the Formosa Zero squadrons turn 2. These claude squadrons will become the nucleus of my IJN pilot traing scheme. Turn 3 should see the min KB attacking shipping in the SRA and the frankly expendable battleships pounding Kuantan/Mersing.
A task force will also ready itself for Kuching. A full brigade engineers and baseforce. I don’t think the IJN attacked it on day one of the war and as it is not in an area I am attacking as part of another "historical" operation I will not land turn 1, but stop short and land turn 2 or 3.. From here, Kuantan and Saigon I should be able to isolate Singapore and put pressue on shipping in the norther DEI.
First turn will see a port and airfield attack on Singapore - if I can put a torpedo or two in the POW things get easier.
Burma
2 Divisions, the regiment just north of Singapore and a couple of base forces will move up via Tavoy to Rangoon. Once Malaya is under control I will think about moving further but this will be my most cautious theatre for the first month or so.
The Kiungshan transport squadron will fly 1st Aviation up to this theatre to join the Burma HQ at the upronouncable base it starts at. To speed this up I will be moving extra transport squadrons in l2d2Tabbys mostly. Sonias and Oscars can have a forward base to operate from quickly this way.
Philipines
48 Division to Lingayen, 65 Brigade to Vigan. Both with Support units and whatever extra stuff I can carry easliy. The division at Amani is move to Legaspi., covered by surface forces sent down from Japan. I do not intend to rush here, just attempt to bottle the US forces up in Bataan and leave them to strave for a while. 2 Divisions and Brigade can get this process rolling. 38th Divion will join them from HK once that falls. Air attacks turn 1 will be split between Manila port and Clark - I want a few of those subs dead early on.
The Southern PI operation starts turn 1. 56th Brigade and a base force move from Palau to Davao covered by the cruisers. The small SNLF force originally marked for this task moves instead to Guam.
Central/South Pacific
PH attack will go in as per historical first turn. However the KB will pull back towards Wake at the conclusion of the operation to cover the landings there for a day or two as these have been strengthened noticeably and I want to minimise the threat of US carrier interference. The Iwo Jima forces originally tasked for Gaum will now hit Wake, the destroyers in the bombardment foce being detached to avoid shore guns.
This frees up the orignal Wake force to take Tarawa. All other ships at Kwajalien will move to Truk.
China
Apart from Hong Kong and Nanchang I am staying quiet for a few days. Garrions will rationalise a bit to free up comabt power. This is the area I have studied least and I want to examine it a little more before getting into serious fighting. I hope to get an offensive moving somewhere here by mid/late december.
Ok - that is the masterplan. Fairly traditional I know but this is my first PBEM game and I promised not to be too unrealistic in my first turn. Any opinions?
News of the open moves of the war should follow at the weekend.

7/12/41 - Operations report
Having heard that the results of the attack on Pearl are often disappointing I was concerned that the KB would not get the sort of success that would set me up for a serious offensive. So when the combat results showed 7 US battlships hit, 5 with at least one torpedo, 3 of them with 3 or more torp hits as well as bombs I was pretty happy. Even happier when the Arizona was reportd as sunk later in the phase.
Landings in Malaya went well, troops are ashore at Mersing, Kuantan and Khota Baru. With a little luck I can get enough ashore to seize either Mersing or Kuantan quickly and get an airbase up and running. A nice bonus was one of of Nells reportly putting a torpedo into the Repulse.
Troops are also ashore at Lingayen, Vigan. Appari and Legaspi on Luzon - the paln is to round up the US forces in Bataan asap and leave them to rot until Spring.
Siezing Davao airfield is one of my main targets for the first few turns - I really want Bettys flying out of here to interdict traffic out of the Phillipines. The Palau Brigade and a baseforce came ashore this turn and should take it within a day or so. Bettys should be flying from here within the week.
Guam and Tarawa are mine with a force enroute to Makin. The Furutaka class cruisers -minus their destroyer escort bombarded Wake this turn. Invasion transports are enroute and will be covered by the KB as it falls back from Pearl.
Overall a satisfactory first turn.
8/12/41 - Plan
I am not going to worry about my opponents plans - with a few exceptions nothing he can do in the first few days can seriously hurt me.
My vision for the first week/ten days of the war has me firmly ashore in Malaya and the Phillipines, with airbases at Kuantan, Loag, Kuching and Davao. Troops are ashore at or near all of these and it is just a matter of taking them. If I can get to Clark field from Lingayen that will be a bonus. With these airbases taken I can bein the serious task of crusing alliend aland forces on Luzon and in Malaya. I want all these guys rounded up and herded into Singapore and Bataan before the end of December.
My main fears are:
1) US carriers trying to prevent a Wake Invasion around turn 3/4. KB is heading to cover this and if the US carriers do interfere I will take the chance to kill them.
2) A serious counterattack on the Malay beaches, maybe linked with a naval strike on the transport groups. Not much I can do about a land attack on the beachheads except hope enough troops get ashore this turn to fend it off. My airpower and bombardment groups can hopefully deal with the surface threat. I will lose transports to air attack but I am willing to take those loses.
23rd Mixed will load this turn at Singapore along with some engineers, base troops and AA. Target is Kuching. Once I have Kuching and Kuantan almost all the Indo China arir will relocate - Army to Kuantan, Navy to Kucking. This should more or less isolate Singapore for outside help.
56th and 4th Division are marcking to Sasebo where thay will load and be shipped to Malaya to finish of Singapore and be ready for DEI operations, Starting in Februaary.
After covering the Wake Operation KB will move through the Phillipins to the DEI. Mini-KB will stay out for trouble until I can refit it with Zeros, then head for Truk to cover a move against Rabaul/Kavieng/Lae beginning around Jan 1st.

8th Dec 1942 - Operations report
Main action today took place off the coast of Malaya. In what will go down in history as the Battle of Mersing the RN tried to disrupt my landings.
POW, Repulse, Mauritius a C class cruiser and a handful of destroyers steamed into the coastal waters of Mersing looking for my transports. Repulse had been reported as having taken a torpedo hit in yesterdays raid on Singapore harbour and as she was seen to be making light smoke on arrival at Mersing this must be considered confirmed. Luckily for the Japanese infantry packing the transports the IJN bombardment force had not retired on completion of its work and had remained to form a heavy escort. Kongo, Haruna, Atago and Takao, along with supporting LC and DD moved to engage. Superior Japanese night fighting technique and torpedoes prevailed and after a fierce fight at ranges down to 5000yds the British disengaged badly mauled.
Two British destroyers were lost. The Repulse and Mauritius limped away badly wounded. The Mauritius was reported to have sunk later that day and the Repulse, desperately trying to reach Singapore was caught by a flight a Nells as she ran. It took but one more torpedo to finish her off.
Japan did not escape unscathed. The Haruna took a number of heavy shell hits and is making for Saigon at 15 knots. Flooding and fires are coming under control and I expect her to survive but she will be in dry-docking for a long time. Takao may not be so fortunate, she is still badly on fire and filling with water, her chances of reaching Saigon no better than 50/50.
Overall I am happy with the exchange. The landings were protected and I have sufficient forces in place to ensure they stay that way. Nagato, Must, Isle and Huge moved down from Japan pre-war and will arrive off Mersing on the 9th. The baby KB is in Saigon harbour exchanging Claudes for Zeroes. These forces should be more than enough to cover the remainder of the Malaya operation. Allied air operations were enthusiastic but not very effective with no more than a few minor hits on APs or PCs.
The US Navy attempted some sort of operation around PH - not sure what but several TF of Destroyers and DMS came out of Pearl heading W and NW. Unfortunately for them KB had pulled back due W after the PH attack but was still within range of these new groups. KB are claiming 8 DD or DMS sunk for the loss of 3 aircraft.
On land Imperial forces secured Aparri, Loag, Vigan and Lingayen in the Phillipines. Aircraft have already flown into Loag as a baseforce accompanied the initial landing. 2 Divisions, 65th brigade and some support units are now ashore on Luzon. Hopefully this will be enough to pen US forces in Bataan or Manila. 56th brigade is ashore in force at Davao along with a baseforce. As soon as Davao is secured nells and zeros will move in to cut the US Navy's retreat path.
Tarawa and Guam are now Japanese. Makin will be in a turn or two. The Wake invasion is two turns out with KB falling back towards it in support. All in all a positive second day of the war.

RE: AAR Lagavulin (JA) vs Undeecovergeek (Allied)
9/10 th - December 1941 Operations Report.
The war continues to go well.
In Malaya both Mersing and Kuantan have fallen to my troops and army aircraft have been flown in. From now on there will be constant raids on Singapore by Lillies with fighter escort as well as sweeps over the airfield to keep his fighters supressed. Allied air efforts have been enthusiastic but relatively ineffective. A few transports have been hit but nothing I am not happy to accept.
One of my subs put 2 torps into a British destroyer heading towards Palembang and I see lots of naval activity between there and Singapore. My opponent might be planning on making only a token effort for Malaya and fighting harder for the DEI. Only time will tell. My Nells have hit a few ships fleeing Singapore but all in all their performance has been sub par.
All of the northern Luzon bases are now mine, and my lead infantry has reached Clark. Over 100 of my aircraft now operate out of Loag. Unfortunately I forgot to send a base force to Davao - will have to fly one in once Clark falls.
The US put in a brave PT boat attack on my Davao landings. 5 PTs attacked the anchorage but all their torpedos missed and my destroyers sank all 5. B17s and Dutch bombers have hit this landing a few time but loses are light and Davao is now in my hands. I am happy to trade a couple of APs for the place.
3th Division again attacked Hong Kong dropping the forts to level 4.
11/12 th December 1941 - Planning.
Continuing with my orignal plan.
Malaya. Infantry divisions will begin the march out of my beacheads this turn heading for Johore and Malacca, cutting the Peninsula in two and hopefully trapping some Brits in Northern Malaya. Mini-KB has now partly refitted with Zeros - 24 on one carrier and will now sail to a point south of Singaporeand try to kill ships leaving there for the DEI.
Philipines. My lead infantry will attack Clark Field this turn - not sure what I will find here. With luck he has already run for Bataan, as I have seen little resistance so far.
Rabaul/Solomons. - A troop convoy will reach Rabaul a day or two. An SNLF, NLF and base troops. Some small units are on the way south from Tokyo. Once they arrive I plan to expand quickly down the Solomons chain. KB will operate out of Truk covering this move. I want the US to intervene here were I can get at them with KB and land based air. For this reason I plan to expand very fast here - lightly escorted troops convoys will move small units out at every opportunity. My opponent will see a rash of rising sun symbols spreading across the Solomons towards Noumea and hopefully feel compelled to do something about it.
Wake. South Seas detachment lands this turn, should be plenty to take the place. KB is closing on Wake after the Pearl Harbour attack and will be around in case the US carriers interfere. After that it heads for Truk.
Second wave. Large convoys are loading in Sasebo containing my second wave troops split into two groups:
1) 16th Army is enroute to Davao along with an infantry division and support elements. They will form the first assualt wave for Southern Borneo/ DEI in early January by which time it will have been joined by 38th Division from Hong Kong.
2) Another infantry division, engineers and base troops are destined for Malaya. They will either land at Mersing and help take Singapore or if that is under control by the time they get here they will form the first assault wave for Sumatra.
My overall plan has 25th Army from Malaya taking Sumatra as soon as Singapore falls. 16th Army will move through Balkpapan/ Tarakan towards Flores/Bali. This should cut off Java. In the meantime smaller units grab the remaining bases. 16th Army will move as soon as its forces arrie from Sasebo, Sumatra though must wait until Singapore falls.

15th December 1941 - Operations Report
Allied resistance has stiffened over the last day or two although my forces are still making headway.
Malaya.
The peninsula is cut in half as my boys have now taken Johore and will take Malacca within 24 hours. As far as I can tell three or four British Brigades are cut off to the north for the Imperial Guard to mop up once the finish their overland march. Both Kuantan and Mersing have strong air forces in place so Singapore is now effectively under siege. The AVG were moved here a couple of turns back so air to air loses are a little steeper than I would like but the runway at Singapore is now in pretty bad shape so I think the difficult bit is over. From now I can maintain 50 fighters and a similar number of Sallys and Lillys over Singapore every day. A few Anns and Sonias are harassing his shipping in the area.
In the loss column I have to report the sinking of the cruiser Kashii, victim of a swordfish torpedo and a bomb from a Wirraway. About half a dozen of my Aps have been hit as well, most will survive. At Mersing my supply convoy was driven off by a surface group - I was wondering where the Houston had got too and now I know. This turn Yamashiro, Fuso and 2 cruisers will move the Mersing in case he tries a repeat and the Mini KB will position itself about 3 hexes to the east.
Borneo/DEI.
35th Brigade is ashore at Kuching along with base troops and engineers. I expect it to fall within a day or two. Then 2 of my Nell squadrons along with a pair of Zeros will move completing the siege lines around Singapore and in position to attack DEI shipping
Philippines
My opponent has formed defensive positions at Clark and Manila, more or less as expected. My main force is at Lingayen prepping for a move to Clark, whilst 16th Division moves up from Naga to Manila. A base force reaches Davao in 24hours and then the Bettys move in. Davao will become my main base for phase 2 operations against Balikpapan and Tarakan.
Rabaul/Solomons.
A mixed bag of SNLFs, Naval guard and engineers are ashore at Rabaul with baseforces following in a day or three. Three transports badly hit by aircraft including b17s from Australia but I can live with the cost. I expect some heavy fighting here and it will take a few attacks to secure the place but I expect to be basing stuff here within 10 days. After that I am going to try a fast "shotgun" approach to the Solomons, grabbing everything I can as fast as I can.
China
Fighting this turn at Yenen and Changsa (my attacks) and Nanning, Canton(allied offensive). Too early to tell which way these will go but I am optimistic.
KB
Reached Tokyo this turn to refuel, then south to the either the DEI or Solomons depending on where my enemy chooses to make a fight of things.
All in all a satisfactory first week to the war. I have made some mistakes and my opponent has made some good moves:
1) I forgot to send a base force to Davao with the first wave setting back my siege of the Philippines by a week.
2) AVG moved to Singapore just as the Mini KB hit shipping in the hex. That cost me 20+ Kates and pilots.
3) The Imperial Guard division got lost and has now reached Victoria point - bad navigation on my part.
4)Resistance in front of Clark has been tougher than I estimated and I don't have much extra force on the way here as the Philippines were intended as a secondary operation. A division will have to be dispatched from Sasebo to bolster forces here. Unfortunately that will weaken my phase two operations against the southern DEI
5) Enemy attacks at Nanning and Canton are going to pin down 38th Division for a while. This was to be my reserve division for Singapore in case things went poorly and I needed a bit more crunch power. With luck I will get away with this as Malaya is going at least as well as plan.

RE: AAR Lagavulin (JA) vs Undeecovergeek (Allied)
Operations Report - 18th Dec 1941
Philippines.
Not much to say here. My initial landings are over and all my guys safely on land. All the Northern Luzon bases are taken. My forces are not gathering at Clark and Manila building supplies and prep points. Extra engineers and artillery on the way as is a division from Japan. I expect to launch attacks on Manila/Clark towards the end of December and drive the US forces into Bataan. Air force units in the Philippines are mostly stood down and will stay that way for another day to two then go into intensive pounding of Manila and Clark.
Malaya.
Similar to Philippines. Mersing, Johore, Kuantan and Malacca(?) are mine. Building forces to move on Singapore and Alor Star. Hermes and Revenge tried to come down through the strait, probably to interfere in the DEI. Hermes lost a lot of Sea Gladiators to Oscars but avoided my bombs. Lost sight of them now. Air forces from Kuantan/ Mersing and Victoria point are pounding shipping between Palembang and the top end of the strait.
DEI/Borneo.
Lots of action off Caching. Allied naval forces have made two attempts to raid shipping at Kuching - one with a cruiser force, the other with Prince of Wales plus cruisers, all backed up by heavy air support. Honours are about even here even tho my own forces were outgunned. The 4 Mogami class cruisers intercepted the POW group, damaging the POW and Tromp. Mogami is badly hurt but will survive as I could instantly dock in Kuching. POW on the other hand took 2 torpedoes from my Nells as she withdrew so I might get lucky and see her sink.
On the down side 2 Swordfish pilots put torps into the Hosho. She made Kuching with 20 system damage, 20 flotation and still has 15 fires. She can stay docked in Borneo for now and repair in Singapore when I take it. Her air group is ashore and fighting.
Rabaul
This is my weakest theatre. I really underestimated the force needed to take Rabaul and the strength of his response. My initial landing got ashore but the 4 small combat units I have here are not going to take the place - 2 0 to 1 results have proven that. My attempt to get reinforcements in got driven of by Canberra, Hobart, Leander and Achilles plus and friends. I have lost 2 light cruisers down here, several PG/PC and about 6 AP and doubt I have done much damage.
Within the next few days I have to reinforce Rabaul. 5 forces are enroute. 2 SNLF with a light cruiser and 2 DDs as escort from Truk. A light cruiser and 6 DDs from Palau. 4 DDs fro Kwajalein and finally - the KB. However this has to come from Tokyo so won't be in theatre for some time.
China.
I am holding on at Canton. My forces cleared Nanning this turn and are pushing the Chinese back fro there towards Canton. If the allied player does not pull back from Canton I will cut his supply route to the hinterland within a week.
Yenen and Changsha are quiet while I build up forces.
KB
All but Kaga are on the way to Rabaul. I need to reinforce here and anyway this is where I want to pull the Allies into a major battle - although I want to take Rabaul before it happens.
Kaga is staying in Tokyo for repairs. She acquired 8 System damage in the PH operation - all from time at sea, none from enemy action. No other ship got more than 3. I don't want to send her on another long voyage until she repairs some of that.

RE: AAR Lagavulin (JA) vs Undeecovergeek (Allied)
Operations report 20th December 1941
Malaya.
More infantry have landed at Mersing over the last couple of days, fresh from Sasebo and Saigon. When these guys reach Johore the whole force will advance on Singapore and begin taking down its defences. With a good chunk of the British forces still in Northern Malaya we should make progress. IG Division is moving south from Songkia this turn and a brigade is marching north from Malacca to Kuala Lumpur to deal with these northern troops.
I am hitting shipping leaving the Malaya /DEI area pretty hard. Nells and Anns from Tavoy and Victoria point are picking of an AK, and I would guess more that I am not seeing as confirmed sunk given the number of hits.
DEI
Allied aircraft out of Batavia and Brunei are very active. I have a problem at Kuching. Allied surface forced chased off my invasion fleet before all the supplies had landed and I am desperately short here, meaning my aircraft are not flying. Supply aircraft are flying in what they can but I need to get a supply convoy in urgently. A fast transport will drop off a few hundred this turn, at the cost of an AV torpedoed last turn by aircraft out of Batavia. A more significant convoy, shielded by the baby KB is forming in Saigon.
Philippines
Quiet on Luzon, except for my troops suicidal attacks on the Clark Field defences as they move there piecemeal from Lingayen. I hate the "auto shock attack" business.
The allies are still using surface forces despite my air superiority. A mixed CL/DD force including Boise and De Ruyter sneaked up on Davao and wrecked a troop convoy arriving there. This is to be my launch pad for the Borneo operations in January and I am trying to build up forces here so these cruiser raids are a pain. This one hit especially hard - Boise was on form as usually and I lost 2 Otori class destroyers and a couple of transports. My Davao based Nells got revenge sinking the De Ruyter but AA fire got 4 Nells so their morale is pretty poor and I will have to rotate them out.
Rabaul/Solomons.
An enemy carrier is still lurking just south of Rabaul, 36 Dauntless hit my troops on the ground there every day if they don¡¦t hit ships bringing in supplies. If it will stay just one more day I have a surprise for it as the KB has just passed Caving headed south ƒº One CV vs. five, just the sort of odds I like. The speed run from Japan has caused some fairly significant system damage though so I want a quick fight then a couple of weeks for repairs. Another SNLF will reach Rabaul on the 23rd along with supplies - I should then finally be able to take the place and push on into the Solomons.

26th December 1941 - Operations report

Only one item to report, all other sectors remain quiet or are running according to plan.

The British have stage an amphibious landing at Tavoy - a brave move as they must have weakened their forces in other areas to have achieved this. My own forces at Tavoy consist of no more than 2 base forces so this has the potential to be nasty.

Luckily for me I don’t think this will cut my supply lines for the Moulmein/Rangoon operations as I can get supply for this via Rahaeng (one division is already in the hex NE of Rangoon and 4th Regt is on the road from Rangoon to Raheang (not at home so spelling of this one is guesswork). 55th Division is at Moulmien which will be attacked this turn. Intelligence says there are 3 enemy units at Moulmien and at Rangoon so I have the chance to cause some real casualties here.

To cope with the landing at Tavoy I am going to cancel the Parachute assault of Brunei and Miri - forces to take these will instead sail from Taan in about a week. The two parachute regts will be transported to Tavoy and Bangkok. Between them they should be able to contain the enemy long enough for either Moulmien to fall or the 4th regt to move down towards Tavoy. In addition heavy air support has moved to Victoria point - 26 Zeros, 20 Oscars, 36 Bettys and 40 army divebombers, further aircraft can reach from Bangkok so enemy shipping here will get pounded.

This is a gutsy move by Undercovergeek - definitely not something I would have tried. I feel that over committing to defend Burma can get India into trouble. Add to that the fact that those troops landing at Tavoy have no good way out and you have the potential for a disaster. On the other hand this has dislocated my plans for Borneo so it has achieved something.

RE: AAR Lagavulin (JA) vs Undeecovergeek (Allied)
Operations Report - 3rd January 1942
Fierce fighting on all fronts over New Year saw significant Japanese gains but some were only achieved with heavier loses than I hoped.
Malaya/Burma
The British landing at Tavoy has been contained by 1st Para. With luck my opponent will lose a Brigade here. Moulmein fell on the 3rd with a brigade and 2 base forces becoming prisoners. Efforts will now shift to Rangoon where 55th Division has another 3 British units bottled up.
In Malaya British forces are penned into Georgetown, Khota Baru and Singapore itself. Once IG reached Johore I will begin efforts to assault the Island. With 3 Divisions, 2 Brigades and 2 engineers I hope to see it fall, especially as at least 2 defending brigades never made it south from Alor Star and Khota Baru.
Borneo/DEI
The heaviest fighting of the war took place off Southern Borneo over the first two days of 1942. 56th Div arrived off Samarinda and began landing but the British committed a major naval force to prevent me getting a foothold. Prince of Wales, Revenge plus Boise, Houston, D Class and Dutch cruisers arrived the first night and really hammered my still loaded transports. Due to a planning error KB was too far away to support the landings as I had hoped; I simply had not allowed sufficient time for them to arrive from Rabaul given their appalling fuel state. About 1/3 of 56th Division ended up in the water, overall I lost about 10 transports and 2 destroyers. However the troops that did get ashore took the base but are now completely unsupplied.
Fortunately for me Prince of Wales must have been nursing some serious wounds - one of my subs reported hitting it last week and I think one of my destroyers scored a torp hit during the convoy battle. On the morning of the 3rd Kb launched at long range strike but POW was already reported as sinking before the strike landed. Revenge, Boise, Houston and several other cruisers and destroyers were hit hard. A D class and a Dutch boat have been confirmed sunk.
In secondary operations, Tawi Tawi, Jolo and Tarakan were also secured.
Solomons/New Guinea
Rabaul fell on Jan 3rd after a fierce fight and is now home to 1 Zero and 2 Nell squadrons. No sooner did it fall than 60 4e bombers hit it fro Port Moresby L. I am going to rely on land based aircover to push on into the Solomons chain as quickly as I can.
Summary - Month 1.
Overall I am pretty happy with events so far. The Allies have lost force Z battleships plus a significant number of cruisers and destroyers and a large proportion of the merchant shipping in the DEI and Philippines. Given the latest KB strike I estimate that the DEI must be almost devoid of enemy surface units.
My forces own most of Malaya, Southern Burma, Guam, Wake, Rabual and most of the Philippines outside of the Manila-Clark-Bataan triangle.
January should see me mop up the minor bases in the Philippines and drive the US out of Clark and Manila. I hope to see Singapore and Rangoon fall before month end, freeing forces for Java/Sumatra in operations to begin in February.
On the downside my air loses are heavier than I hoped, a 2.5-1 kill ratio for the most part. Morale bomber squadrons is fragile, even the Nells and bettys so they will need a lower tempo of operations this coming month. My AP loses are also creeping up and I will have to start being a little more conservative. Finally KB needs some port time, system damage on all the carriers is closing on the 7-10 range - Kaga has spent the last two weeks in Tokyo having gotten to 8 damage on the PH operation. Zuiho needs dry-docking having take a torpedo and 500lb bomb off Kuching in Mid December. 56th Division is also badly weakened after it's dunking over New Year and will be a bit fragile for the future operations against Sulawesi/Flores I had hoped to use it on in January.

Operations Report - 10th January 1942

Things have been relatively quiet since the major battles of Balikpapan and Samarinda. My forces move forwards steadily with little Allied resistance. I think his run in with the KB off Borneo has worried my opponent as well a severely reduced his available forces.

Malaya - My boys have moved to Singapore and will begin bombarding the place - say a week or ten days of pounding then I will begin the deliberate attacks. New Guinea is a little different as I want Port Moresby.
China - We have agreed a ceasefire here. Mass land warfare is not that exciting and neither my opponent nor I want to have things decided here. We have agreed to let Japan have Yenen but no further offensives beyond that unless Allied bombers are based in China.

I am seriously considering an airdrop on Akyab early in February, about the same time as my infantry should be reaching Mandalay.

18th January 1942 - Operations report

Malaya/Burma. Rangoon fell on the 14th with a nice haul of prisoners. I am moving base forces here and the two parachute regiments. Once they are all settled comfortably I am going to try to take Akyab with a parachute assault. The Allies lost at least two brigades and a couple of base forces that were trapped in Moulmein/Rangoon and another at Tavoy. The Burma front has to be weak so I am going to push hard here and see what gives.

The Singapore assault began yesterday. The first attack took the fortifications down 2 levels, today's only one. However I expect the place to fall with the next few days. After that the troops will rest up until the end of the month and prep for Java, it will take a while to get shipping in place for that operation anyway. One engineer unit and maybe some tanks with head north to help the 5th division mop up at Khota Bharu and Georgetown.

Borneo/DEI. All of Borneo, apart from the far west coast is now under Japanese control. My forces are building up at Balikpapan and Kuching which will be the jump off points for February attacks on Java and Bali/Flores/Timor respectively.

Today the 23rd Mixed got ashore at Jambi along with some supporting units. It will rest up for a few days then push down to Palembang. If my opponent has not sneaked in an extra garrison then this might be enough to take the place if not I will run in some reinforcements once Singapore falls. Apart from Palembang I plan for Sumatra to be a bit of a sideshow to February's main event in Java.

Solomons/New Guinea. My progress here has been more expensive than I hoped. A US Carrier group intercepted my landings at Lae and Salamaua, the troops got ashore but I lost a dozen AP and some escorts. Supplies are short at Rabaul as I horribly misjudged the demands of the troops there. Major reinforcements and logistics support are on the way south as I write but I am pretty much stalled here for the next two weeks until they arrive. Undercovergeek is using the opportunity to pound my ground forces from PM, all his 4e bombers appear to be there. Looks like he plans to make a real fight for the Solomons and New Guinea. Frankly I regard the area as secondary theatre - I want PM and the Solomons as far as Espiritu Santu, maybe Noumea but it is not my main objective and I will trade progress here for gains elsewhere so finding his main forces here is not a real problem.

However as he wants a fight here I do want to keep his attention. The bay KB along with the new Shoho is coming down to the Solomons. Between them they have 108 aircraft. Along with the Zeros and Bettys at Rabaul this should be enough to handle up to 2 US carriers. I own a number of airfields and ports around here so if I do lose a carrier I can probably save a lot of the pilots. It is worth risking my smaller carriers for a shot at the US ones.

Central Pacific. About 4days back my opponent landed the 2nd Marine Div on Wake, catching me totally by surprise. However I think it is a big mistake. This stage of the war is far too early for an Allied counter offensive and I plan to make him pay for it.

After taking Wake with the South Seas Detachment I left it there just in case of an early move by the Americans. It seems to be holding without too much trouble. If it can hang on for another ten days or so help will arrive in the form of KB which is currently refitting at Kure. In addition I have the PP points to transfer on of the Home defence divisions to an active command and the transports to move them to Wake. 4 extra Nell and Betty Squadrons have moved to Kwajalein and Saipan and are spending a few days resting. With any luck I can kill the 2nd Marines here plus whatever chunk of his Navy he uses to try and protect it.
Philippines. Not much going on here. I am still sitting at Clark and Manila waiting for reinforcements and for the Americans to begin starving. 38th Division is on the way from Canton and engineers from Japan.

Overall I am happy with progress so far. Some problems tho.

1. IJN pilot pool is empty ! My training program has started but I am already worried about pilots. From now on I have to be more careful with aircrew.

Operations report 23rd January 1942

Malaya/Burma. This is my most successful theatre of operations. Singapore fell on the 22nd, Khota Baru on the 23rd, between them these two netted almost 100k prisoners. Another small commonwealth force is trapped at Georgetown and will be mopped up by a division headed north to Burma. At Singapore I have 3 divisions, 2 Brigades, engineer and support units, all resting up and prepping for Java. When the harbour is free of mines I will move in troop ships and escorts.

2nd Para landed at Akyab on the 23rd - only a base force there so the place fell easily. Next move is to fly in a base force of my own. 1st Para will then try a repeat performance at the Andaman Islands. I think the Allies are really weak here; they lost Brigades at Tavoy, Moulmein and Rangoon. Another is cut off near Raheang as my lead division had taken Tuang Gyi, Pagan also fell this turn. So I plan a major offensive here in February aimed at Mandalay and the roads to China.

DEI/Borneo. One brigade got ashore at Jambi and is headed south to Palembang. I lost some transports to Allied bombers but losses where acceptable. Small forces are mopping up the last Borneo bases over the next week or so. My main operation against Java is scheduled for the first week in February. To support this I am resting up my airforces at Singapore, Balikpapan and Kuching.

Philippines All quiet. 38th Division has landed at Naga and is marching to Manila. When it arrives the assault on the city will begin.

New Guinea/ Solomons Port Moresby is proving a real pain in the backside. My opponent is making a real fight for this area. B17s, B24 and Hudsons out of PM are pounding my convoys to Salamaua, lots of AP loses. A major supply convoy is rerouting to Rabaul and another to Salamaua. When they arrive my airgroups will try to close Moresby - Sallys are being moved from Malaya to help with this as I need the Bettys in the Central Pacific.

Central Pacific. Wake will be the scene of this wars decisive battle. US Marines retook the place a few days ago, although South Seas detachment is fighting on. I cannot permit Wake as an Allied base and intend to take the chance to kill off a Marine division. Infantry from Japan is moving to the Marianas as I can free it up with PP points, KB and Mini KB will hit Wake in a few days along with a BB bombardment group. 3 more BBs are moving over from the Malaya area. Every Betty I can spare is moving to Kwajalien and the Marianas where engineers are improving airfields. If my opponent wants to fight for Wake in February/March 1942 I plan to oblige him, but he will be fighting the A team on ground fairly friendly to me. This gives me shot at his carriers if he tries to support the Marines on Wake, anything else is doomed. In the meantime I will continue advancing in the DEI and Solomons using my second line forces.

OPERATIONS REPORT 31ST HANUARY 1942
All fairly quiet at the minute as I regroup for the next phase. The only major operation in the last few days was Baker Island - a small comabt unit and base force are now ashore.
Troops are prepping for Java and ships to transport them are collecting at Singapore. The first invasion wave should land in about 4 days with more to follow in around a week.
Other small forces are mopping up minor DEI and Solomons bases.
KB is headed south - I really need to do something about Moresby so all 6 carriers will pay a visit, along with a couple of BS. Infantry is prepping at Rabaul. However the KB has been around Wake for a few days and will take time to reach New Guinea.
Once Moresby is taken I will shift attention to Wake and Midway in March - at the same time trying to get a foothold in Northern Australia.
