RHS Ship Art

Post by Buck Beach »

I have read in the manual that I can swap other ship ART into RHS games with no negative effect. May I get a confirmation that this is still the case (things change with time)? I would like to use some of the files posted on Spooky's site.

As long as you are just changing the art it should be OK.  You need to make sure that the files you are overwriting are the correct ones.  Some of the ship art you'll download may not be set up for RHS, so the files might need to be renamed

Go to the ship class (or aircraft type) in the editor. Find out the "art slot" (bitmap) number. Name the new bitmap that number. Put it in the right place. There are DIFFERENT art files for planes and ships, and for each side. If you understand these names - and that there is more than one picture involved (planes and planetops, ship sides and ship sils for example) - you are OK.

There is a new standard library of art being worked up by Matrix, CHS and RHS. Cobra handles this for RHS. Cobra loves to address art - and he operates at light speed - so ask him for anything you need. He has lots of art from different places. There are also art resources on several sites, including AKWarriors RHS site, and Spooky's WITP site.

I thought it was a plug and play. Think I'll stick with the Art connected with the scenario since it is very good too.

Try Freemans art....excellent IMO (nothing against Cobras - his is excellent also)....go to Freemans site and you can get some great looking ships with multiple backrounds).....all you need to do is change the slot #s on the file to match the RHS ones (making sure at first that they are the same ship) and replace....don't forget shils and sides need to be done for each transfer.....

What are the shils & sides. I know of them but in my ignorance I thought the shils were the transports, etc. Now that I think of it that is pretty stupid but I still don't know what they are.

They are different graphics for the ships....very cool IMO....

The shils are in the art file called AlliedShip_Transp
The sides are in the art file called AlliedShip_Back

Note - these are the allied ship files.....[;)]

yes, pretty stupid labeling IMO.....[:(]

The shils are used in ship - to - ship, air to ship combat screens
The sides are used when you bring up a ship into info screens

Shils are shillouettes (I think) used at night (or something like that).

The thing to understand is that the art numbers DUPLICATE. Bitmap 101 for the Axis is not the same as bitmap 101 for the Allies. So there are corresponding folders for the art - sides and shils - for each side. And they aren't consistently named either. Confusing I know. You need to put both bitmaps in the right folder for the right side when you change just one ship. And it is the ship class that changes - not the ship itself. All ships of a class share the same graphics.

It is well worth the effort though. Fremen is my favourite ship artist, but unfortulately he is so busy with his WITM super mod that he does not have the time to accept requests for art like he used to. I would also recommend Dixie's site (see the link at the bottom of one of his posts). He has some excellent ship and plane art.
