No mouse cursor

Post by walterlzw »

I'm sure this problem is not new to you guys but there's no FAQ here so I think I'll just ask.

I'm using Windows XP SP2 and there is no mouse cursor when I entered War in Russia. It is there, just not visible. I know because if I move the mouse I can click on different buttons.

I just tried it in my office computer which also has XP installed but I can see the mouse cursor.

Does anyone know how to correct this problem?

Thanks in advance!

Problem solved. Use DoxBox.[8|]

Thought Matrix version is customized for Windows so I didn't resort to DoxBox right in the begining.

Walter.... just want to say here that... I posted something about display modes in the PW forum but the same discussion applies to WiR as well as other Grigsby games of the era like Carrier Strike and..... I can get these games to come up fine on my XP SP2 and, when I bring them up in DosBox and go to fullscreen... the top and bottom of the display are blacked out. In other words... it takes the 350 of the 640x350 and puts it on the 640x480 display.... centering it and thus leaving black space at the top and bottom.

But... I have compared this to the normal XP SP2 fullscreen on my display and, at least on my system, the DOSBox display is BETTER despite the black space. To be more specific, the text is more contiguous and thus more readable, and the icons are also more contiguous and thus more distinguishable, etc. Also, the units in WiR and the flags in PW, end up being rectangular and, IMO, that looks better <g>.

But... maybe there is varience on something like this from system to system. On my system, when I use normal WiP, there is some black space between horizontal lines and thus I get the impression that my system can handle the 640x350 but... not very well. When I use DOSBox with the black space on top and bottom.... there is STILL some black space between the horizontal lines but.... just a bit and that is whey it reads and looks better.

Whatever... just thought I post this FYI and any comments you might have.

I am reading your reply a little late but thanks, DeadInThrench!

I don't like the black boxes, too, so now I'm playing fullscreen without DosBox and mouse. I believe this game was made for the keyboard and mouse support was only thrown in as an afterthought. The best solution I have read here is to get a wide screen LCD but that would have to wait until my current one breaks down... not in a couple of years' time... [:)]

I suggest using DOS box, everything got better for me when I did. The graphics in particular were much better and the mouse functionality became very normal.
