Using TOAWIII for operational map only?

Post by ETF »

OK I remember several years ago playing a Combat Mission (Eastern Front) using an operational map from TOAW II.
Is was a blast resolving tactical battles via the Combat Mission engine and then updating the map (TOAWII) with the editor. I do recall though the editor was clunky and of course was not designed for one trying to combine these fine two products.

That being said will TOAWIII be more conducive to this you think? How has the editor been improved? Can one move the units on the map and the save the game and make additions or deletions to the said units and then continue to play the next turn?

Thanks Guys...........

Back in ACOW you could rename the save file extension .sal or .pbl to .sce and load the file into the editor and edit it like any other normal scenario. Don't know if this is still possible in TOAW III.
The only problem is that this will mess up events as the turn counter is each time set back to turn 1, but for your purpose it might be fine.

For the editor improvements: You can export/import and edit the OOB and/or the map or part of a map as an .xml file.

Right now TOAW III doesn't allow editing of saved games because of possible issues with cheating in PBEM. If there's enough interest, we can look into putting in an 'editable' flag.

If it's just repositioning units after you resolve combat with CM, then you won't need to worry about events, etc. Century of Warfare is probably a better bet since you can still open save files in the editor. The editor is still the same on the surface.

OK sounds great will go back to Century of Warfare for this.

Can anyone refer me to a product/software with half decent maps that  can move or update counters on it? Re. Using a third party software to handle the tactical battles with a campaign?
Thanks Guys!

I would like the ability to edit a game while in progress, makes it so much easier when testing to correct problems and not have to start all over.

Sounds like for the stated purpose they can just use the raw scenario file and just make the edits as necessary. Doesn't sound like they need, or want, a pbl file. They can use the sce file as a living document and update as required.

Yeah, but with a monster game like FitE that would mean literally thousands of edits. Zort ( Buzz ) is talking of making just 50 or so edits.

Why not use Google Earth or Earth Explorer? You can add place marks and move them around. You can also save some text with the place mark. With some fiddling, you may even be able to make the place mark a NATO military symbol.

On second thought, I guess there would be no way to update and send the info to an opponent.

Yup and you can also use the TOAW counters (Nato military symbols) that are available in the various mods.

Why not do a screen grab and save it in a file and email the file to your opponent?
