Someone please help!

Post by SmilinJack »

Hi all,

OK[:@]. This is my fourth league that WILL NOT ADVANCE. I finish the playoffs...the championship screen comes up and I hit DONE.

I go to the standings screen and END SEASON button is available (not New Season button) I click END SEASON and the window explaining what is about to happen pops up, I click YES and it blinks me back to the standings screen....NOTHING[:@]

This has occurred now in four of my own leagues. Two indoor 8man leagues and the other traditional American Football leagues.

What am I not doing correctly? Am I missing something?

This is heart breaking.

In most of the leagues I have a human owned team...could there be something I supposed to do to my team before it will advance?

Frustrated not-so-SmilinJack[&:].

Not sure what's happening

try going to utilites  and click on compact league database
not sure if that'll work but it's worth a shot

SmilinJack,
I did have that happen once, cant remember if I figured out the issue. I am generally always patched with the latest update, so I dont think that was it.

Can you send me the league file

gary_l_sorrell@yahoo.com

Its necessary to ask, so here goes :-)
Are you working with a fresh install and the most recent update Patch v.1.3.149 (44mb)

Oh, and when you schedule the playoffs, did you click 'Yes' when asked if the game was the championship for your league? I think New Season is available only after you actually play a title game. Although I may be wrong.

Hi Gary,

Yes I'll send you a copy of the league. On the first AFL I was playing a best of three so NO I did not say yes to the championship window...I thought that might have been the problem. I then did a complete re-install, having deleted all old files and folders. Now, I conclude every season with the Championship game and I get END SEASON, but worse it will not even advance from there. Also, I am using the latest update 1.3.149.

I have one league (in which there is no human owner) that I finished sometime last week and it advanced through the championship game and provided me with the right New Season option. That too proceeded through the draft and camp just fine.

So, it appears having a human owned team (I also watch the championship games?) might be a problem, or having watched the cpu versus the cpu?[&:]

One other thing, I currently back up Leagues, MainDat, TeamPos etc all in a seperate folder. Could a lock up anytime during my season cause a problem with MainDat or the league file? Could it corrupt something I don't notice until season's end?

I did during this last league have my PC lock completely (I used one of hack153s playbooks that wasn't a complete book--my fault--great plays and books by the way). I had to unplug the PC to power off[X(]. I rebooted and restarted with the proper play books and all seemed fine until the season end.

Thanks guys.

Still any other clues or help would much appreciated because this has occurred on all but one league. It is a trend. The worst part...I LOVE this game...can't get enough...teams, books, leagues, etc...I can spend hours just tinkering...AHHH reminds me of the Front Page Days!!

Just saw this and had a thought. Is the league set up as a career league? Also what level are the players, if I recall if the players are "All Pro" level then the league can only be a single season league.

Hi nmleague,

I selected Professional? 45 man rosters with 5 man draft...45% import rule etc... I assume this is a career league?

I'm not sure why this would be happening. CPU v CPU or Human teams or any of that has nothing to do with the advancement of the season. Once the title game has been played then the game advances the season. It doesn't care about who owns what team at that point.

The stock installation seems to be advancing properly as I just recently played out 8 seasons of indoor football using the current public build.

...I can spend hours just tinkering...

This is the only clue I have. In that during the tinkering, something broke and you didn't notice (or didn't know what it was).

SmilinJack,
I looked at the league you sent me. It appears that it is a 18 week schedule, and you have only played thru week 13 or 14.

The Playoff screen says Season Not Complete. Which is correct since you have several weeks to go.

Check your other leagues and see if they have more weeks in the schedule than you wanted. I think that 18 is the default in the League Creation section, which is what the CFL plays. You have to set it to something else if you dont want 18.

David,

I don't tinker with files. I don't own a database like Access nor do I use any tools supplied by 3rd party dev. I have used playbooks by hack153. I meant tinkering with making uniforms, teams, plays and leagues...the kind of tinkering your game is supposed to supply. I assure you I've not used anything other than your GAME and your supplied tools.

I've done a fresh install withall the latest updates. My goal is to help identify what MIGHT be a bug or something I might be doing.

This morning I statred fresh with the same league but reset it. I'm in season four with no problems[:)]. However, I no longer have a human team.

All I can figure is something, somewhere was corrupted.

I'll ask again. If the PC crashes during your game could the MainDat get corrupted or would it be the league files themselves?

I keep a backup league file but have found that when going to it the "non advance" issue is still there...making me think it is a maindat corruption or something.

Gary that was my last back up; however, if you sim through the rest of the season conduct a simple playoff, as I did, with that league it will not advance.

Try it and see.

Maybe it is something in my game dat.

Okay.. different people have different ideas of 'tinker' so I'm never really sure of the extent the person means. Heck I've had people send me email asking for help on decompiling the executable so they can 'tinker with it'.. (no, I didn't help them :) )

Yes for both. A PC crash can cause damage to any file that may be open at the time.. not just with this game. I don't suppose you happen to know the nature of the crash?

I cant get thru a week without errors, im thinking that the league file must be messed up. I dont have this problem with other leagues im using.
I know I had this problem once myself, with the season not progressing. It may very well have also been related to a crash.

Nice league SmilinJack, how are the short quarters working for you. I use 7 or 10 minutes usually.

The latest crash occurred when I used one of hack153's playbooks, but didn't know it wasn't really a book. Basically it didn't have all the appropriate plays in the book and I didn't know.

The other crashes? I cannot recall; however, they are few[:)].

However, I'm well into my fourth year of the new season as of today for a 8 team league and (knock on wood) all is well.

I will assume the mid season crash had originally coruppted the league before last.

I'm trying to backup the league more regularly. And now the MainDat.

Thanks David I appreciate your game, time and infinate patience.

I really liked the league and the quarter length was fun; however, as of late I'm playing a traditional American league. I will eventually restart the league you have seen.

I will eventually start posting my league stuff at the on-line forum. I may one day devote a web site to a league with, history etc.

My current league is very fun and I'm writing a fiction for the league. I'll post it later.

Thanks Jay

Feels good. I was as suprised as anyone. All the teams that were at the top of the league, and in the playoffs, had already beaten the snot out of me in the regular season....Florida twice.

Motor City gave me a gift by losing in the last week, so I backed into the playoffs. But, it all worked out for the best :-)

Next season we may be going to custom plays, and we are going from 3 downs to 4. It will likely be a whole new show....so im enjoying the limelight while I have it.

And on that note, let me just say, 20man rosters are a nightmare to manage. It doesnt take long before you are manipulating the inactive roster and the free agents. Finding DBs and WRs that can be at least somewhat interchangeable is important. Plus, I did away with all but one LB and kept only one active RB.

DL and OL should be interchangeable to some extent also. Its a challenge to manage but really was fun near the end of the season. I raided the FA list for speed guys. It paid off in the title game.

I am going to experiment on my own with reducing overall speed ratings for DBs and WRs. And bump up the speed of the RBs. It kills me to see a lot of 99 speed guys. Put a DB or KR with 99speed at RB and you can sweep to your hearts content. It turns arena ball into a "12yds and a cloud of turf" league :-)
The computer LOVES to run the ball if it starts getting yardage. I watched a CPU game and the teams ran wild, double digit rush attempts and single digit pass attempts.

Making 8 man plays is a lot of fun. I have a few that have everyone but the o-line and QB in motion. If you send a blocker up the middle with a strong RB right behind him, it is possible to get some good short yardage. Good for goal-line possessions. Its fun trying to get a run game going in the indoor league. And it can be done without putting a speed freak at RB.
I havent messed with defensive plays yet, but there are a couple in the default book that handle the sweeps ok.

Im rambling!

Ramble on! Gotta love this game.

I really liked my first AFL 8man league; however, I've always had trouble with the score a minute scores. It's like eating green mash'd taters...tastes like mash'd taters but just doesn't look right. I'm an old school 3 yards and a cloud of dust, play for field position-kind of guy.

I really have to change my thinking to except 75-69 point games. I think that's why I liked the 3 minute quarters.

Anyway after many tests and setups. I'm at home with 11 man pro with MAXFB. It is sweet.

I agree about the 20 man rosters. A friend and I actually use 40 man rosters in an 8 man experemental league we are playing. It is really cool. We actually build our teams to have strengths and depth. LBs can become a real strength in 8 man if you have enough to sub on specialized plays etc...

I requires less juggling for sure and creates a real atmosphere for building a running team, defensive team etc.

SmilinJack

PS Good luck next season[;)]. Our 4 down games were less fun but did opened up a realistic running strategy for indoor football.
