US CV's obiberate Japanese Convoy

Post by stldiver »

Jan 4th and 5th of 1942 Once again goes to the US forces. The Saratoga, Lexington and Enterprise caught up with the transport group they spotted the day before, and boy did they have fun over a day and half of strikes. Unfortunatly no troops were aboard, as I believe the group was destined for wake to pick up the troops for other operations. Jessie will just have to let those guys tan a little longer. I planed the strike correctly and my CV group ended up only 60 miles from his Transport Tf, I destroyed all but 1 ship in the two days. Final count 5 MSW, 5 AP, 1 PC and 1 AV[:)] sunk, I think I lost one dauntless to operations. After the attacks all three carriers ops are around 56% and we have spotted one more TF to the west but it is moving 20 knots to the west so we cannot catch that one. I figure the KB has to be hell bent on its way here and it might be time to move out, and I mean move out fast .

Johta has fallen this turn, so now, it's time to bomb the hell out of Singapore.  Unfortunately, I was a little too close to the AA this turn.  Guess Ill have to get back up to 15K feet for my bombing runs.  I always forget to change altitudes when bombing bases with AA.

2 x Ki-48 Lily bombing at 6000 feet
3 x Ki-48 Lily bombing at 6000 feet

Bombing runs on Clark continue to mount up.  It's been this way for a few weeks, and there is no end in sight.  54 Betty's, 27 Nells come calling day after day.

Day Air attack on Clark Field , at 43,51

2 x G3M Nell bombing at 6000 feet
3 x G4M1 Betty bombing at 6000 feet

Rabaul also falls this turn, which was expected.  The push in this area will continue to get stronger.  We hope to capture Noumea by February.

In China, Tim continues to give me fits.  Chinese are swarming the place!  Whenever I leave a base open, guerillas move in and take it.  Im trying to clear them out, but it's proving difficult.  Oh yeah, and the buildup in Canton continues...

Elsewhere, things are quiet.  Tim's CV have disappeared, I havent decided whether to pursue them.  Of course who knows where they went.  Ankorage? Pearl?  Suva?

Subs don't rule

Post by stldiver »

Jan 8,9,10 and 11th 1942 are pretty much positioning days for both sides.

The only significant events was a Dutch sub sunk and Kutching
and two Japanese subs sunk one off of San Fransico and one of Melbourne.

The Nells at Kutching claim some more ships.

And there is more destruction of Guerillas in China and another empty town liberated by Guerillas, this is mostly an anoyance as the guerillas cannot hope to hold these towns.

China Map, of Big B Mod

Post by stldiver »

Well the turns of Jan 12th and 13th of 42, were once again pretty quiet, so I will take the opportunity to update on china with a little detail an a map. Before that on to other theatres.

Central, South Pacific [>:][>:][>:][>:]

Southwest Pacific Rabaul fell a few days ago and he has begun landings further down the solomons, starting with Shortland.

DEI, Malaya Bombers from Kuching get another hit or two, nothing noticable except more transports swinging past singapore headed to Rangoon area [:-]

PI Very queit he is resting his forces in the south due to their manhandling by the philipines at Naga, in the north 10 more units have landed he will start a push in about a week I imagine, daily bombings continue, with heavy zero escort, so P40's amuse them selfs with strafing nearby shipping occasionally and getting some sun on the phillipine beaches, it is really tranquil in this area of the war for them.

China In Big B mod there are many more Chinese units, plus guerillas behind the lines, but a lot of those units are static to towns, and unless they are forced out they stay. Thus making a Chinese offensive is rather limited and a Japanese one has to be very concentrated. Jesse has concerned himself with taking Hong Kong (which fell at the end of December, at first great success then his troops tired out). Now he is cleaning up the Guerillas behind his lines, 2 have been destroyed in the last couple of days, many pushed around almost to destruction, these apparently respawn in 30 days so they will just move back to the front and infilterate back, but he does get good points for killing them.

The Guerillas have liberated two empty towns, Ningpo on the coast, and Anking in the interior, he has units next to these, but it was good for morale, and the Guerillas were treated very well by the rescued townspeople. They will soon be back in Japanese hands, but it takes time and that is on my side.

At Canton he has 3 divisions and 1 Bde, but I have 2 to 1 in AV superiority with my divisions, Thus he is locked down, with the town as defense I cannot push him out unless I bring in more units, or he removes them. Thus one good thing is the division that liberates Hong Kong is here instead of being packed up to help take islands in the Pacific, thus once again gaining me time. [:)]

His largest stack of units is at Hankow, but untill recently guerillas had supply lines cutoff, they will get cut again shortly, so untill he clears those they cannot move on Changsa or other areas, which are building up defense as we speak.

In the air war he bombs some base about, the main one is Changsa which I rotate AVG units into here are a couple of battle results, BigB mod reduces nastyness of mistakes or advantages, but his nates cannot handle the avg.

Here is the ground combat at Canton
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Canton

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 7301 troops, 28 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1624 2 to 1 [:D]

Defending force 94990 troops, 603 guns, 6 vehicles, Assault Value = 868

On another point, most of his units in the interior are pushing my guerillas around, and I believe there are two more divisions in china he can pull out without paying PP's but they may also be busy clearing guerillas, but I don't know as I have not investigated thier names, but I know there are troops out there I have not spotted and he has yet to make a push anywhere. Except moving a division up from Foochow into the crossroads. But the town next to this unit has a static defender, so I am going to defend whether I like it or not.

Overall supply situation is good, my airforce consists of AVG defending Changsa, the rest trains, and forts build.

Thus that is where we stand, I am happy to have him bottled at Canton, but I realize he will eventually make a push once the guerillas get cleared, but I believe I have enough forces to hold.

1/14/42 & 1/15/42

Tim continues to toy with the Rising Sun.  Nearly all of my ports have been mined, and about every day or so, another ship is sunk due to hitting a mine.  My MSW are now allmost exclusively escorts, and not ASW ships.  My subs try to get in good position, but it's only a matter of time before they are spotted and taken out by his own ASW forces.

He also has a small group of fighter bombers south of Manilla on one of the islands there.  They keep hitting shipping which is sailing by.

Also annoying the crap out of me are the fighters gaurding Changsha.  I'm wondering how many kills these guys have.  Im trying to keep the supplies down here, and the only escorts I have right now are Nates.  The nates are getting shredded.  My Oscars and Zeroes are busy elsewhere, so once I get a group with enough exp, Ill try to switch them to Oscars.

The last few turns I've seen shipping head to Soerbaja, and this turn I decided to hit the port from Kuching.

Also, for the first time in a few weeks, I try Clark Field's defenses:

Ground combat at Clark Field

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 51176 troops, 419 guns, 151 vehicles, Assault Value = 860

Defending force 44493 troops, 252 guns, 121 vehicles, Assault Value = 1055

Japanese max assault: 754 - adjusted assault: 114

Allied max defense: 1132 - adjusted defense: 562

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 2)

Japanese ground losses:
2081 casualties reported
Guns lost 43
Vehicles lost 9

Allied ground losses:
1584 casualties reported
Guns lost 28
Vehicles lost 2

Not bad, but the forts arent going down any.  Not sure why, I have a lot of engineers here.

Other than that, the buildup continues.  The action should heat up very soon, and we'll see if Tim brings his CV to the party.

Captains cabin CV Saratoga evening Jan 5th 42

Post by stldiver »

Early evening aboard CV Saratoga, Jan 5th just after Saratoga, Enterprise and Lexington send a second convoy under the water.

1st Officer of Saratoga Mr Myers "Capt Sir, Which direction to we take the fleet, fuel is low and we have a little over 50 stores for the planes"

Captain Ramsey "Well son, we want go to the Far East so go that way" He casually points away from the setting sun towards the east.

Myers " Sir, you are pointing to the east, which is home to midway and pearl, but you said the Far east, which is to the west"

Ramsey "Don't take me for a fool, they would not call it the Far East, or East Asia if it wasn't to the east! Now go north for a couple days then head to the Far East!" Once again pointing to the east.

Myers "Sir we don't have enough fuel, and shall we inform the Enterprise and Lexington"

Ramsey "Your job is not to question, but to do the orders and don't worry about those ships, they always follow us, know get out!"

Four days later through the morning gloom a large oiler is seen thru the mist, know who put that there, after several days refueling, the oiler almost dry heads home.

Back to the captains cabin. 3 commanders of the CV's sitting around the table, Ramsey, Murray and Sherman.

Ramsey "Well, we don't know where the KB is but they have to believe we are headed home, who else would be crazy and refuel just off the Japanese coast, the question is what to do now?"

Murray "The KB could have come north, I still think we head back to Pearl and combine with the Yorktown and soon to arrive Hornet, our 5 carriers will surely stop the Japanese"

Sherman "I on the other hand say lets not lose this opportunity, we are close to Tokyo, lets bomb the cr****p out of it and head home, a little payback for Pearl"

Ramsey "Both suggestions are valid but I have one that if it works, may just cut the Japanese were it hurts most"

Both captains lean closer in as they both know they have to follow the Saratogo TF no matter what, somthing unseen keeps them together.

Ramsey "Our new plan will be to sail SW just out of search range of Japan, down past Iwo Jima and straight into the Phillipines, where he has transports, all over, and BB's sitting in Daveo harbor. We will sail within two days range at economical speed, then go full speed into the islands, our CV' planes causing mass distruction to his transports and BB's. Then we will pull into Manila, refuel, rearm the planes, before they have a chance to tell their planes to stop attacking Clark, and Cebu island and look for ships!! Then we will sail out at full speed to Darwin, wrecking havoc all the way, and if we meet the mini KB, say goodbye to those boys! What do you think?

All 3 captains grinned from ear to ear!
Sherman "Lets do it, and if we are spotted short of the target, it will mean more Japanese ships underwater and we will have to make the choice then to go forward or withdraw"

The meeting ended with all 3 captains shaking hands and heading back to thier ships.

US CV's spotted

Post by stldiver »

Jan 16th and Jan 17th 1942

Captain Ramsey's diabolical plan has been uncovered on the 17th, 2 days short of execution. The 3 US CV's attacked and sank 2 AK's southwest of Iwo Jima, BlackSunshine is alerted now and will probably switch his Betty's to Naval attack, They still fly from lvl 3 fields so no torpedoes, but will I still catch his transports? The other alternative is to race towards Darwin at full speed (4 days will just make it). Decisions Decisions, and last is a withdrawel, oh why did those AK's have to show up?

A few notes

Post by BlackSunshine »

Yeah the air war over Changsha has been very bloody.  I finally got enough Oscars to upgrade my most experienced pilots in this theater into some better planes.  Although it's only 1 squadron, the results are starting to be a bit better.  Although now Tim has 25 Curtis's here.  I know these guys have taken out a couple dozen nates.

Nice job sneaking your CV that far past my defenses!  Very agressive maneuver.  My intel has been non-existant as to the location of the TF and my scout planes must be blind.  Thankfully I spotted you when I did, or it could have been pretty ugly!

CV's burn another TF on the way out!

Post by stldiver »

Well the allied CV's have decided to turn tail and run instead of facing alerted Betties and Nells, but on the way past Tori Shima (yes they hit the gas and went full speed) They spotted 3 PG, and 1 AO, well 2 PG and 1 AO are confirmed sunk the PC shall not last more then a couple of days, so scratch one more TF. The second day they were back out of sight and on the way home. Only the KB can catch them now and I doubt they are even close. All in all a good couple of weeks if they make it out. Then were to next.[8|]

South Pacific
He captures Tulagi and Lae with no resistance.

Central Pacific The SS Tambor has been playing with an ASW group at wake the last two days and there are AK's there also, it appears, he is supplying or moving. I also had 4 reports of radio transmission 60 miles NE of Entinewok sp?, anyway I believe the KB is lurking just behind these forces hoping that the allied CV's show up on the way home. Well I won't risk that one so instead 5 DD's will arrive tommorrow during the daylight (experiance mid 70's day, 30's to 40's for the night). If they KB shows up I will know, if not it will be a good fight with this force.

Carrier Battle NW of Midway

Post by BlackSunshine »

Well, my esteemed opponent couldn't quite get away.

As he was moving into range of the Phillipines a few days ago, KB was moving on Midway and beyond.  When I spotted them, I assumed they would withdraw back to the East.  Thankfully I guessed correctly.  Had he gone south, or continued west, he would have ran into a lot of LBA near the Phillipines as well as Manado.

I plotted a course NNE with KB hoping to intercept them as they withdrew.  I forgot to take screenshots before ending my turn, oh well.

In any event, here are the results:

Losses in aircraft were high on both sides, my most experienced datai now has 32 kills.  One CV will try to escape I am sure, but KB wont be going home until it's sunk!

RE: Carrier Battle NW of Midway

Post by stldiver »

Jesse did an excellant job laying in wait for my CV's I will not underestimate him again. Hopefully. Jan 24th and 25th saw the KB laying low the escorts of the once proud American Taskforces at the end of 4 days all 3 CV's have gone under, 5 CA's and a CL at least. The only solice is they will be rebuilt, but thats a long way's away and Jesse has bought himself definate breathing room.

4 days mostly ground combat

Post by stldiver »

Jan 26th, 27th 28th and 29th, 1942 were mostly concerned with ground combat.
The allied forces are still recovering from the lost of their mightly carrier force but the land units have shouldered the burden and are giving the asian hordes their just dues.

Burma Jesse hit a supply fleet to Akyab with a lot of Sally's from Rangoon, the buffalo's were pushed aside easily and many AK's were sunk or badly damaged over the 4 days. Buffalo's have been recalled from the front lines and will only defend bases without fighter escort.

China [>:][>:][>:][>:]

DEI Japan has invaded Palembang but over the 4 days have only managed 0-1 attacks, here is the last days attack. He is bombing and bombarding these forces.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He also bombarded Tarakan to stop nuisance bomber raids, they have flown out.

PI Cagyan holds the 1st 2 days but fall the last day. I lost about 100 VP points of troops there. Clark holds again to a 0-1 attack. Tommorrow I am going to try and shock those boys back to Japan.

Japan's coast I normally don't put subs on Japans coast due to torpedo malfunctions, as Jesse is learning they are mainly minelayers, but I put the Grayling there and two shots, two hits, two good torpedoes, The tanker showed oil burning [:)]. They won't sink due to the port being close, but this is probably the 1st supply convoy back to Japan.

End of the Month Report

Post by stldiver »

Well the last two days of Jan 42 saw standard action. He bombs Singapore, Akayb and Clark, along with other bases, his troops rest. The good news is at Clark he was pulling his forces back at the same time I decided to shock them. The 48th Div, 7th Tank Rg, 8th Hvy Field Artilary, 21st Eng Rgt, Yok 1st, 3rd SNLF, and 14th army HQ were all routed [:D]

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

Now to talk about this month. It was Good and Ugly for me. The good was my CV's racing thru his convoy lanes disrupting transports and supplies the the Central Pacific. The Ugly was they were caught and I have lost 3 CV's and numerous CA's. I will post pictures. They will come back but it gives him much more freedom of action, me being down to 2 CV's. Jesse played it very well and spanked me for my aggressivness. But the game is not fun sitting in port.

In China my guerillas' harras his back lines but everything is pretty stagnent, the AVG has quelled his bombing actions for the moment. They have been very successful vs Nates and Oscars.

In Burma, he has Rangoon and bombs Akyab but has not moved further yet. He also badly damaged a supply convoy to Akyab and I lost 4 Ak's. I feel comfortable in this area for the moment.

In DEI and Malaysia, He has not moved into Singapore yet, but bombs it constantly, He has invaded Palembang but has been held to 0-1 attacks. I moved some extra units there from Singapore [:)]. He has not moved past Menado, but I see his transports getting loaded to go. He controls the airways, nothing moves without getting sunk.

In Central and South Pacific all is quiet. He sits at Rabaul probably building for Noumea and PM, they have to wait for KB, as I still have 2 CV's.

The Phillipines continue to be a pain for him as I hold the line at Naga/ Manila and Clark/Batan. He has pulled his forces back from these bases due to there continued 0-1 attacks and attrition, they will rebuild and come back, but I don't see it for a couple of weeks.

All in all aside from the loss of my CV's, and CA's I am comfortable with my position.

Here is the score at the end of 1/31/42
I still hold a slight lead but the troop losses and capital ship losses are definatly putting him in position to pass me. The air losses are about even with most of mine being the 3 CV's sunk with no place to land the planes.

I see that you still have an firm hold on Timor which is always good notice.

As for the US CV's ---> You get them back! [:)] ...and those enemy CV's propably will need some yard time too.

Enemy Cv's East of Noumea

Post by stldiver »

Feb 1st & 2nd 1942

Well there is no rest for the wicked as An enemy CV group is spotted East of Noumea, probably the mini KB but cannot be sure as it reconned Noumea, as no shipping did it find.

Changed the erroneous report, apparently Palembang held, there must be some mindbender operations going on the allied side, teaches me not to look at turn but to do report off of the replay.[:-]

Singapore is invaded and knocks down a fort level. He achieved a 1-1 my replay showed 0-1 but Jesse is good about sending the Japanese replay to eliminate the errors in the allied replays. Sorry I didn't keep the copy to post. There are 3 divisions plus others.

In China there is ground combat at Ichang where he has 2 divisions and an Aritillery. He trys to push out my 3 newly arrived divisions and finds it hard going.

I decided to take this update to give everyone a feel for the Sub/Minewarefare and PT boat efforts as the Allied command see's it.
First the Japanese SS boats range from just off the west coast from SanFransico up to Anchorage, to all the major islands, Major Ports in Australia, all along the coast of India, throughout DEI, Lets just say I cannot go anywhere without stumbling across these buggers.

But that just means all my international forces get a shot at them, As for my forces most escaped the initial raid on Manila, only 1 lost and as Jesse has found, they have been on an extensive minelaying campaign throughout PI and neighboring ports. The PT boats at Manila and Soerabaja have sortied many times, with no major results but the attacks have to bother Jesse a little.

So what are the results, well here they are. 1st PT boats.
I have lost 22 PT boats so far (1 sank in my sub laid minefield), for those efforts they have sank
1 AP, 3 AK, 2 PG, 3 MSW nothing earth shattering but a good effort.

As to the not so fast killers, what has those minefields been doing. Well aside from my PT boat sinking in my newly laid field. Here are the results of Japanese losses.
1 AP, 3 AK, 2 PG, 1 MSW, 1 PC, 2 DD, 2 APD, 1 TK A solid effort so far and it has slowed Jesse down in terms of he has to make sure MSW are with all his task forces.

As for the silent hunters I have lost 4 subs so far, 1 to a torpedo at Manilla on Dec 7th, 2 in port at Soerabaja to bombs, 1 to Depth Charge,
they have sank the following ships.
7 AP, 5 AK, 1 MSW All these kills attributed to Dutch and British subs, as the US forces do minelaying. Except for a few on attack patrols.

Drum roll please, to Jesse's subs efforts, the following allied forces have been sunk.
2 AP, 5 AK, 3 PG, 3 ML, 1 DD, 3 TK, 1 AO, 1 AV, 1 AS a total of 20 ships so far and at what cost?

12 japanese subs have been found and sunk so far, I am very pleased with these results but any day I expect him to hit one of my capital ships so I expend all efforts to eliminate these secret hunters.

Here is a picture of his current losses.
