USAAF PTO HQ

Post by el cid again »

5th Air Force formed up in Brisbane in March 1942. I formed it on 15 March 15% disabled.

7th Air Force existed as Hawaiian Air Force when the war began. I give it the dual name
Hawaiian/7th Air Force - and while it exists when the game begins - it is at 10% strength.
It was renamed in March 1942.

10th Air Force was formed up at New Dheli on 16 May 1942. I form it 14% disabled.
It was associated with the AVG - and when that organization was renamed the China Air Task Force
it was originally under 10th AF.

8th Air Force appeared in Okinawa in July 1945, and claims to be the atom bomb dropper. 20th Air Force appeared in India in "April 1944" and moved to China, was defeated and driven out of China, and then moved to Pacific bases and really did drop the atomic bombs in 1945. 20th AF is in all flavors of WITP, 8th in none of them. Half of the 8th arrived only in September 1945 - after the war had ended.

11th Air Force began as the Alaska Air National Guard and now starts the war - but is 90% disabled. It has a dual name
Alaska ANG/11th AF

13th Air Force formed 13 January 1943 at Luganville. I start it 17% disabled.

14th Air Force formed as the China Air Task Force on 4 July 1942 in India, and was renamed 14th Air Force later. I gave it a dual name of China/14th Air Force - and start it 16% disabled.

Before posting, I looked at CHS 177 and did not see it. What slot?

More germanely - why put it in? Apparently 20th Air Force formed 20th Bomber Command - and 8th Air Force (after it started to stand up) began to be in command of it - in spite of it still being part of 20th Air Force (administratively?).
Whatever we call it - there was only one command operating one set of bombers in the Western Pacific at the time.
I can see calling it either 8th or 20th - or even 8th/20th. Since 20th operated WITHOUT the 8th until about July 1945, it seems to me that stock and CHS (in the CHS 155 and CHS 177 sense I checked) were more right than wrong to leave the 8th out. If CHS changed that - I am interested in why - and might adopt the same standard (which often is the case)? But I don't understand yet.

Note that with respect to these HQ - until now - RHS IS CHS. It began with the CHS177 file set - and anything never changed (like these HQ) - didn't change - and remains as it was when the conversion began.

175 is the Indian XXXIII Corps - in my copy of CHS 177 - of the last version Andrew sent to me. Since these slots were never tampered with by me or anyone else in RHS, it remains that in RHS - all versions - all scenarios - all levels - to this day.

IF this was changed at some point - what happened to XXXIII Corps HQ?

I think it would be best to use a released copy of CHS, not a development copy, if you want to check it for anything. The current release of CHS is 2.08, which is available from the usual places.
More germanely - why put it in?

I put it in as it is a USAAF HQ, and the scenario includes USAAF HQs in the HQ list. As a general rule, reinforcements are in the CHS scenario if they were to occur before the end of 1945, and the 8th AF arrived in the PTO almost 6 months before that cutoff, if I recall correctly.

11th AF
Military aircraft began to deploy to Alaska during the last half of 1940. To coordinate air activities there, the Alaskan Defense Command established the Air Field Forces, Alaskan Defense Command, on May 29, 1941. Under authority from Western Defense Command, the Alaskan Defense Command replaced the Air Field Forces, Alaskan Defense Command, with the Air Force, Alaskan Defense Command, on October 17, 1941. Neither the Air Field Forces nor the Air Force, Alaskan Defense Command, were legitimate War Department establishments and must be classified in the same category as provisional units, although the term "provisional" was never used in connection with them. The War Department activated the Alaskan Air Force on January 15, 1942, replacing the Air Force, Alaskan Defense Command.

Lineage
Established as Alaskan Air Force on December 28, 1941. Activated at Elmendorf Airfield, Alaska, on January 15, 1942. Redesignated 11th Air Force on February 5, 1942, and Eleventh Air Force on September 18, 1942. Moved to Adak, Alaska, in August 1943. Redesignated Alaskan Air Command and assumed major command status, on December 18, 1945. Moved to Elmendorf Field (later, AFB), Alaska, effective October 1, 1946. Redesignated Eleventh Air Force on August 9, 1990 and, concurrently, status changed from a major command of the United States Air Force to a subordinate organization of Pacific Air Forces.

13th AF
Like the Fifth Air Force, the Thirteenth Air Force has never been stationed in the United States; it is also one of the oldest, continuously active, numbered air forces. It engaged in combat in the Pacific during World War II. Since World War II, it has provided air defense in the Far East, primarily the Philippines, until the 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo forced the closure of Clark AB. Numerous Thirteenth Air Force organizations participated in Southeast Asia combat operations in the 1960s and 1970s.

Lineage

Established as Thirteenth Air Force on December 14, 1942. Activated on January 13, 1943, on New Caledonia Island. Moved to Espiritu Santo Island, New Hebrides in January 1943 as part of U.S. Army Forces in the Far East. Moved to Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, in January 1944, and to Los Negros Island, Admiralty Islands, in June 1944. Assigned to Far East Air Forces on June 15, 1944. Moved to Hollandia, then Noemfoor Island, New Guinea, in September 1944; to Morotai Island in October 1944; to Leyte, Philippine Islands, in March 1945; and to Luzon, Philippine Islands about January 1, 1946. Moved without personnel or equipment to Kadena AB, Okinawa, on December 1, 1948, and to Clark AFB (later, AB), Philippine Islands, in May 1949. Assigned to Pacific Air Force (later, Pacific Air Force/FEAF [Rear]), on May 17, 1955. Assigned to Pacific Air Forces, on July 1, 1957. Moved without or personnel or equipment from Clark AB, Philippine Islands, to Andersen AFB, Guam, on December 2, 1991.

14th AF
Fourteenth Air Force operated primarily in China during World War II and subsequently served Air Defense Command, Continental Air Command, and the Air Force Reserve. Since 1993 Fourteenth Air Force has had responsibility for missile warning, space surveillance, and range operations for DoD, NASA, and commercial launches.

Lineage
Established as Fourteenth Air Force on March 5, 1943. Activated on March 10, 1943, at Kunming, China, and assigned to U.S. Army Forces, China-Burma-India Theater. Assigned to U.S. Forces, China Theater, about October 24, 1944. Moved to Peishyi, China, in August 1945. Returned to the United States, arriving at Fort Lawton, Washington, on January 5, 1946. Inactivated on January 6, 1946. Activated on May 24, 1946, at Orlando Army Air Base (later, AFB), Florida, with assignment to Air Defense Command. Assigned to Continental Air Command on December 1, 1948. Moved to Robins AFB, Georgia, in October 1949. Inactivated on September 1, 1960. Activated on January 20, 1966, and assigned to Air (later, Aerospace) Defense Command. Organized on April 1, 1966, at Gunter AFB, Alabama. Moved without personnel or equipment to Colorado Springs, Colorado, on July 1, 1968, absorbing resources of 9th Aerospace Defense Division. Redesignated Fourteenth Aerospace Force on July 1, 1968. Inactivated on October 1, 1976. Redesignated Fourteenth Air Force (Reserve), and activated on October 8, 1976, at Dobbins AFB (later, ARB), Georgia, and assigned to Air Force Reserve. Redesignated Fourteenth Air Force on December 1, 1985. Inactivated on July 1, 1993. Activated the same day at Vandenberg AFB, California, with a change in assignment to Air Force Space Command.

Far East Air Forces
The Far East Air Forces was created in 1944 to direct the Fifth and Thirteenth Air Forces in the Asiatic-Pacific theater. Also controlled the Seventh Air Force, from mid-1945 through 1946, during the Vietnam war years, and since 1986.

Lineage
Established as Far East Air Forces on July 31, 1944. Activated on August 3, 1944. Redesignated: Pacific Air Command, U.S. Army, on December 6, 1945; Far East Air Forces on January 1, 1947; Pacific Air Forces on July 1, 1957.

The problem with the 8th Air Force is the same as with many units that were scheduled to go from ETO/MTO to Pacific for Japan invasion and that should arrive as reinforcements in late 1945-1946.... They are not in stock OOB but should be included in mods if there are enough slots...

Very nice data AKW.

I will make 5th AF a dual unit - and FEAF can then exist at the start. But how did it move? Was it evacuated, or recreated?

I also found a disconnected slot - and 8th AF does appear in all mods after all - but not near the other USAAF HQ slots.
Apparently at some point CHS rearranged slots so that all the HQ were together.

I have taken this review as an opportunity to flesh out these units so they are more like support HQ. The early war units have - when all up - 192 support squads - 48 aviation support squads - an air force security company (9 infantry squads plus 4 HMG) and an air force engineer battalion (27 motorized engineer squads plus 27 support squads). This totals 247 squads. Late war HQ add 12 x 90mm and 12 x 40mm AAA.

8th Air Force was replaced in RHS by UK Burma Command. Since RHS ends earlier than CHS and stock - I see little point in adding it. 20th Bomber Command can represent it fine. But the 4th Air Force seems wholly missing. I will add that. And I see we have HQ slots freed up by a change in the way RHS deals with Chinese forces - so we can add ANY missing HQ.

In general, I am moving HQ dates forward. Think of it as you get 4th at start instead of 8th in summer 1945.

I am adding Far East Air Forces as a HQ. Adding 4th and FE means we now have more HQ than any other mod.

REPLY: Correct - but there was an official designation - Alaska Air National Guard HQ - it is still unofficially the Alaskan Air Force - and Alaskan Command is traditionally an air force HQ. Unusually - the commander or deputy commander (it rotates) is a Canadian general.

I quoted the 5th AF association history. Machts nichts, I am moving it to PI as Far East/5th Air Force - so you get to move it whereever you please - or not.

The problem with the 8th Air Force is the same as with many units that were scheduled to go from ETO/MTO to Pacific for Japan invasion and that should arrive as reinforcements in late 1945-1946.... They are not in stock OOB but should be included in mods if there are enough slots...

Historically it was on Okinawa. But we cannot know if Okinawa is available for it in a game. Probably it will not be available. WHERE should it appear?

"Moved without personnell or equipment" sounds pretty administrative to me. If we did put it in, it should start at 99% disabled or something like that. It would be awful late becoming effective for RHS - which recommends the war end on 1 Sept if atom bombs are used (I assume the normal case). Since it had been a strategic bombing force in ETO it may be mainly propaganda - to make it sound like an entire air force had moved - one that did strategic bombing - when in fact it was just a designation. Note that 20th AF liniage claims to have done the ops 8th also claims re atomic bombings. Apparently 20th AF never left CONUS, and formed a separate HQ 20th Bomber Command - which may have operationally been theoretically under the 8th HQ - which had no people or gear. Whatever that may mean? Sounds like propaganda to me. 8th had famous commanders and other history - and still does - so using it may have been a way to mount psychological pressure / generate psychological support in US.

Far East Air Forces sounds a lot more real to me. And it arrives in 1944 - in time to matter. So a HQ WITH personnell and equipment in time for almost a year of ops sounds like better slot usage to me.

11th AF(Weatern Command-North Pacific): 1941.12.28 Anchorage (Elmendorf Field) as Alaskan Air Force which was Not an offical disignation.

REPLY: Correct - but there was an official designation - Alaska Air National Guard HQ - it is still unofficially the Alaskan Air Force - and Alaskan Command is traditionally an air force HQ. Unusually - the commander or deputy commander (it rotates) is a Canadian general.

When did the Alaska Air NG come into being as in 1941 Alaska was a territory and as such did not have National Guard units which are State and not Territory contolled organizations? And we are discussing 11th AAF and WWII, not modern reality.

Richard The 11th Air Force was formed 2/42 from the Alaskan Air Force. Components include 11th AFSC(P)(6-8/42)Eleventh AFSC (8/42-46)

In that they had their own "Air Force", I don't think it would be wrong to consider them "National Guard" (for themselves), unless you are comparing them to modern day NG units??
