Chariots and Disbanding units

What are the consequences of "disbanding" a unit? Do I get to keep the manpower? Is there a way to upgrade units? I have a lot of low tech units from early in the game taht I want to upgrade

I can't remember! It was 4 years ago I know in Legion you can upgrade squad size, but not sure if you can in CoW? I think we took it out for CoW because people exploited it having one city with all the upgrades and sending all their men there. If you can upgrade it is only in terms of men in a squad, not unit type. There is no way to change a Levy unit to another unit type if that's what you mean?
