OT: Name That Boat

Post by MarcA »

I was nosing around google maps and found this in dry dock at Murmansk. Can anyone tell me what it is, I don't know. From the rear it looks ballistic but I couldn't say for sure.

I didn't think the Russians put diving planes on the conning tower - that looked American to me.

But I think it's a new Russian Borei class SSBN.

I don't know what that was all about - the server took forever to respond and the next thing I know it posts three times![8|]

Anyway - It's definitely ... a sub [;)]

It almost has to be Delta..I dont know much (read:anything) about their new SSBN but surely the missile tubes are integrated fully into the hull, not causing the hump this sub has.. it screams Delta IV..

First of all...jeez..just..duh.. Im not a pro but doesnt the Borei look like its NOT going to be very efficient???

Secondly.. Im still going to go with Delta IV as my ID. Unless Im looking at it wrong the sub at Murmansk seems to be twin screw. The Borei is single screw. Also, it LOOKS like there are three different angles to the hump..the Borei has two.. finally the sub in the pic has quite a bit of space after the hump, where as the Borei seems to have minimal space there.

Of course, Im probably just ..wrong.

After seeing the twin screws - I agree with you - Delta IV it is![;)]

Im not sure, but I think Project 667 is the Soviet/Russian designation for the class.. various Delta types are given names like 667 BDR (Delta III) and 667 BDRM (Delta IV). The Typhoons are Project 941.

Correct. The Russians aren't in the habit of assigning fancy-schmancy nicknames to their submarine classes... Or at least the Soviet weren't.
