2/09/42

Finally some good news in the land war...

Ground combat at Singapore

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 127937 troops, 1398 guns, 412 vehicles, Assault Value = 2629

Defending force 38041 troops, 211 guns, 7 vehicles, Assault Value = 493

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 3

Japanese max assault: 5214 - adjusted assault: 5671

Allied max defense: 459 - adjusted defense: 577

Japanese assault odds: 9 to 1 (fort level 3)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Singapore base !!! [:)]

Japanese ground losses:
2224 casualties reported
Guns lost 52
Vehicles lost 3

Allied ground losses:
31288 casualties reported
Guns lost 209
Vehicles lost 1

The seige of Fortress Singapore was a lot less costly than I had anticipated. Now I can free up some troops for other theatres.

In other news, China continues to be a stalemate. The AVG keeps popping up at different bases, and making short work of air attacks.

In the Phillipines, I continue to bomb various bases trying to eliminate their supplies.

The buildup at Truk and Ragoon continue. Noumea obviously hasnt even been invaded yet, so my time table for capturing it is a bit behind.

Hopes are still high for the Japanese though.

Tarakan Falls

Post by stldiver »

Feb 11th and 12th 1942

These days were marked with the fall of Tarakan, he bombed, landed and pushed the troops out with ease, what is worse there was very little damage to resources [:(].

He continues to hit Palembang with air and he is primed to take it out shortly. He is bombing ambonia and balikapan now and its only a matter of time before I spot transports incoming.

I have been more concerned with mining then pulling fragments out, and even though I had transferred some good units out of Singapore, a fair number were lost completly with no fragment pulls. Singapore fell very fast once the battle started his bombing campaign worked very well there as well as Tarakan.

In PI he continues to bomb clark, my troops there are eager for engagement but he holds back.

He restarted his bombing campaign in china but the AVG was resting (it needed it). It will fly on the 13th fully charged and hunting Japs.

The rest of the world is very quiet, no sign of CVs from either side.

2/13 & 2/14 1942

Action across the pacific is beginning to heat up. Numerous transports are now enroute for other areas.

2 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 15000 feet
6 x Ki-48 Lily bombing at 15000 feet
2 x Ki-48 Lily bombing at 15000 feet

In other news Tim has got me wondering what to do about the Phillipines. I am seriously debating leaving them alltogether and letting his troops rot there. Bombing does not seem to be working very well, and this turn 17 enemy LCU are spotted at Clark. I am sure they are going to hit Lingayen. I cannot let that happen, as that is my main beachhead.

How the heck will these guys be able to stay supplied for an attack? No transports have been spotted since the war began. Sub transports can only do so much.

Decisions, decisions.

Palembang, Pontianak Falls

Post by stldiver »

Feb 15th, 16th 17th and 18th 1942

Jesse finally unloads on Palembang and takes it on the 15th, the good news is unlike Tarakan which the resources were left intact, the engineers did a good job damaging Palembang's resources. I have included the picture.

Ambonia is invaded on the 15th and I send in a surface group on the 17th that only damages some AK's, I have swiched the leader in charge to more aggression. But he has a lot of troops ashore, it won't last long.

China, Burma is quiet except his bombings, The AVG is quiet[8|]

KB sinks AK, Hibiki sunk

Post by stldiver »

Feb 19th and 20th represented the turning point in the war!

The KB showed up North of Fiji and devasted 3 convoys, 2 at Suva and one just leaving. Over 11 ships were lost in todays action with more to sink the next few days as I cannot stop the full KB.

On a bright note the small surface group that banged around the transports headed to Kendari when I had spotted another invasion fleet incoming. The group lost a CL to a torpedo but the action was a great success with the invasion force withdrawing before unloading and the DD Hibiki was sunk [&o] The ony Japanese ship lost today. Yes that is right the war has turned and the Japanese have no chance to win without there heart and soul.

RE: KB sinks AK, Hibiki sunk

Post by BlackSunshine »

Yes poor Hibiki...

I was very impressed however with the way Hibiki handled itself in this action.  Singlehandedly it protected the invasion fleet and allowed them to escape, taking hit after hit in the process.  The men are to be commended and the story will be a big inspirational lift for the Japanese!

So is the war lost?  No! In fact, with tales of such courage, the Japanese will fight that much harder.

Ambonia falls

Post by stldiver »

Feb 20th and 21st sorta anticlimatic compared to the day before.

The KB moved NE from Suva towards Canton and sank an already damaged AK, aside from that no shipping has it found. [:'(]

In DEI, Ambonia falls, more troops land at Balikpapan.

Jesse Paratroops into Port Blair and takes it with no resistance. He begins landing on a small base in Northern Sumatra and moves a CA group to the southern tip of Sumatra. It looks like its covering transports.

He moves BB's into Kendari but my brave CL's seek other areas.

In Burma he moves within 120 miles of Mandalay with 8 units, I had a unit on recon, but it did not pick these up. I have included a picture of this and China to give you an idea of the area. As you will see the important bases in Burma have dark allied unit markers indicating we have 3 one legged men and a donkey. He should have fun taking these as that donkey can kick.

In China Ichang is taking units as I advanced there and he has countered. Elsewhere it is more just watching each other although he continues to bomb. The AVG will fly this turn to try and counter.

Here is a picture of the Burma, China area

Brisish CV damages Japanese BB's

Post by stldiver »

Feb 23rd, 24th 25th and 26th 1942

The war continues with Jesse grabbing more basis, Balikpapan falls, Kendari falls and several bases on northern Sumatra fall. He seems very organized on his attacks at the moment.

In China, he tangles with the AVG on the 23rd and 24th, losing a lot of bombers but 10 AVG go down, it is forced to retire and the skies belong to Japan, over 50 zero's over Chinese skies.

In burma he bombs and grabs the minor bases, the big battles are forming. The 55th division is at the front.

At the northern tip of Sumatra he invaded just a little to far, although he captured the base, the british CV power arrived, of 4 possible strikes 2 each day, only one went off and it was good. The Yamashiro should be in trouble.

We will stick around 2 more days to see if we can finish her, the weather is very bad though. I will update all maps once the month is done.

The KB swings north toward canton and finally hits the airfield with strikes. Jesse has learned the defence there can put up good flak as many vals, and Kates go down.

More bombings

Post by stldiver »

Feb 27th, 28th, March 1st and 2nd 1942.

The last 4 days represented the continueing pattern. Another couple of small bases captured.

4 Main bases being bombed Batavia, Mandalay, Naga and Port Morseby.

The Kido Butai is sailing west of Canton but has not left the area, just pulled out of search range.

Castor Troy just stated 3 of 4 Japanese minelaying subs sunk[:'(] I didn't even know they had minelaying subs! Wonder which ones they are. The 1-17 just went down near Timcolee, and the 1-19 sustained Heavy damage.

It appears the BB's made Singapore, so unfortunatly none sunk but they will be sidelined for a while.

There are two divisions west of Mandaly by 120 miles, the 33rd and 55th div, and a tank unit. There are also a lot of transports at Rangoon and Singapore, so the question is. Will he strike for India.

With the Kido Butai in the central Pacific and 3 BB's just recieving torpedo hits, its doubtful he can try an invasion on the mainland India, but it would be exciting if he tried.

I had some DD's make fast transports and pick up some of the survivors from ambonia, the next day a cruiser force shows up in the same spot. Alerting me Jesse's ships are just outside my search planes.

I will post maps in two days.

End of the month summaries

Post by stldiver »

Thanks Castor, I never knew that info, my opponent may not have either, as I have encountered no mines.

March 3rd and 4th were uneventful except an AK torpedoed by my minelaying sub 020, on its way to lay mines ( a first for me), and one of his subs bagging a MSW on the west coast of Australia.

The main events this last month was his taking of the Palembang, Singapore and the other main DEI bases except on Java, the KB made a raid on Suva and Canton and sank approx 10 plus transports at Suva, at Canton they ran into heavy AA. Where they have gone, I am not sure but since I have only 2 CV's I will not be running to fight them.

A british CV popped up near northern sumatra where Jesse was invading and managed to torpedo 3 BB's over two days, one was heavily damaged but probably made Singapore. This will slow him down in that area.

In Burma he has moved north of Rangoon to Magwe, but has not advanced on Mandalay, there have been 2 divisions spotted.
India grows stronger each day and with 3 BB in need of repair and the KB in the central pacific I have no fear of invasion, but the coasts will be protected and watched of course.

In southern DEI, Kendari and Ambonia have fallen, but no other signs.
In the Pacific no movement detected but my scouting is sketchy at best.

In the Phillipines action will comence as on March 4th 6 units advanced back into Naga, we will see what his rested troops can do. Naga has been bombed all month, but holds well.

China is a stalemate all over, he doesn't push and I only have limited pushing ability.

Overall I am pleased with the defensive position my units have, they are digging in and await the coming onslaught. This is the last month for his invasion bonus and I believe he is ready to strike in Sumatra, as I spotted many AP's north of Bornea heading west. His intentions in the Pacific are unknown but we are ready.

Here is the current score, and I will follow with snapshots of the area.

It will be seen this month if the divisions from Singapore went to burma, Phillipines or Sumatra. He is beginning the operations in the Phillipines back at Naga, the troops stopped him once, and claim they can do it again!

Well things are going well enough for the Japanese. Although it's only March, I could be doing a little better.

Most of Burma is in my control. A large airforce is now stationed at Ragoon, and more planes and base force units are enroute. Sub activity should pick up in this area as I now have a few AS ships docked here.

I have 2 potential routes of advance into India, 1 would be through Aykab. The other, behind Mandalay. Either of these routes takes me on horrible trails, which would fatigue my troops badly. The other options are obviously by transport, or by taking the main route right through Mandalay itself. This option is a tempting one, but my troops will automatically shock attack as they cross the river.

Decisions, decisions.

Along the China front, things are going very poorly.

I am stuck in Canton, along with all supplies from there. Japanese forces are stuck in Ichang as well. Everywhere you look, I am unable to advance very far.

Supplies are being delivered to forward bases, but occasionally guerillas are hampering my efforts. They are very easy to root out, and mostly just a nuisance.

AVG continues to popup, but when they are spotted I have several squadrons of very experienced Zeros and Oscars ready to launch sweep missions, from my 3 main Airfields which can reach all of Tim's main Airfields.

I also now control most of Sumatra, Borneo and Celebes. The critical airfield at Amboina is under my control.

Fuel, Supplies and ships will be pouring into these area the next few days, as we prep for our next wave of attacks. Obviousloy Java will be a main priority.

Thoughts of hitting Darwin are also in the equation. Darwin now has a size 6 AF, and I believe a size 6 port as well. By taking out Darwin, I can hamper air attacks on my southern resource areas.

And now a look at aircraft losses.

As you can see, I am losing a lot of zeros. Most of the A2A losses were in China to AVG before more experienced pilots showed up. The operational losses are for the obvious reasons which I have tried to avoid, but havent done that good of a job at it.
