7/08/42 - Burma

While something approaching stalemate prevails along the upper Irrawaddy, the advancing 2nd Imperial Guards Division ran into trouble on the outskirts of Akyab.

Nanning Falls - Actions in the Indian Ocean

Post by spence »

11 - 14 July 1942

A Japanese surface action group invaded Diamond Harbor and engaged several small patrol craft. The battle left one patrol craft sunk and 3 badly damaged with little damage done to the invading Japanese. One Japanese destroyer struck a mine upon retirement.

Japanese surface raiders attacked and badly damaged a tanker in the Arabian Sea.

In China heavy bombing of Changsha and Wuchow continued unabated. Following a massive air bombardment a Japanese assault carried the defenses of Nanning. The Chinese garrison was able to retreat in good order to Pakhoi on the coast.

Action in the Indian Ocean

Post by spence »

DATELINE COLOMBO - 17 July, 1942

Naval Headquarters here announced late this afternoon that Royal Navy and other Allied Forces had eliminated the threat of Japanese Merchant Cruisers in the Arabian Sea by sinking those ships in seperate actions today.

Very early this morning, HMS Newcastle and HMS Birmingham, which had tangled several days ago with the enemy, intercepted and set afire the enemy cruiser Hokoku Maru in the Northern Maldive Islands. Contact was subsequently lost due to very poor weather and darkness. A search of the area once daylight arrived revealed no survivors of the enemy ship.

Headquarters also revealed that later in the morning an RAF search aircraft located the second enemy cruiser 250 miles SE of Ceylon. Allied air forces subsequently attacked the ship, identified as the Akagi Maru, and struck her with at least nine bombs, including several bombs of 1000 lbs. When last sighted at sunset the ship was still afloat but adrift and afire from stem to stern. Naval authorities believe the ship had no chance of survival.

SYNOPSIS OF EVENTS TO 28 JULY 1942

Fairly quiet for the last few days of July. For the most part the Japanese have contented themselves with bombing schools, hospitals and peasant markets in China. The AVG made a brief appearance over Honan and brought down a couple of bombers but then withdrew. Ground assaults NE of Changsha and at Honan were repulsed though the Japanese did manage to bring the fort level of Honan down a couple of notches.

A Japanese carrier force composed of at least a CV and a CVL sortied into the Bay of Bengal on the 26th of July and inflicted significant damage on a returning (and empty) convoy from Calcutta.

The CV TF appears to have returned to base on the following day (Port Blair) where one of the escorting destroyers struck a mine. In the meantime two small convoys arrived in Colombo from Austalia on the 28th carrying 2 squadrons of American fighters to the Southeast Asian Front.

Had the IJN TF moved a bit further to the East (South actually) they might have found more lucrative targets....but then again they might well have provoked a strike from powerful land based air on Ceylon. (Since I don't trust LBA to do anything useful against carriers I'm just as happy the "What IF" never came to be. I'm happy with my extra new toys in India[:D])

Skirmishing

Post by spence »

July 28th - August 5th, 1942

The Japanese pushed hard and made some inroads into the Chinese defenses of Honan. Fort level is down to 3 (from 6 at the start of the week) but the IJA has paid for each yard with gallons of its soldiers blood. Heavy Japanese bombing of the fortress has continued unabated throughout.

Elsewhere in China the IJA expanded its bridgehead over the Yangtze River near Changsha. Chinese air units have exacted a small but continuous cost from Japanese bomber and fighter units that have been attacking Luichow.

Allied bombers have hit Adak, Port Moresby and enemy positions in Burma.

At Sea, the S-36 torpedoed two freighters in a convoy near Soerabaya on the 29th. She is now considered overdue as she has not been heard from since that date. Allied ASW forces attacked and badly damaged a Japanese submarine off the East coast of India on the 30th. Allied submarines S-41 and O-16 each claimed a freighter sunk in DEI waters.
Submarine O-23 was damaged by depth charges off the coast of Malaya.

On the 1st of August, Convoy SHX-35 was attacked by a Japanese merchant cruiser, believed to be the Aokoku Maru.
Several convoy ships were lightly damaged but the heavily armed Japanese ship was driven off by the escorting Canadian Minesweeper Quatsino. Subsequent to the action the gallant minesweep succumbed to damage sustained in the action but the crew was rescued.

DATELINE BRISBANE - August 6, 1942

General MacArthur's Headquarters announced today that a new American fighter plane made its combat debut today in the skies over Port Moresby, New Guinea and immediately proved its worth. The fast, long ranged and twin-engined P-38 scored heavily against the defenders downing 7 Japanese fighters for a loss of only one US plane. Today's mission was the first time the previously untried Americans had encountered the enemy. At last American pilots seem to have found the answer to the infamous "Zero" fighter.

c. August 24, 1942 - Central China

Changsha's forts continue to crumble and have now been reduced to a level 2. The town has been isolated for the past week or two after two divisions entered Hengchow from the NE. A bridgehead in hex to the NW of Changsha and NE of Hengchow has fended off several attempts by the Chinese to break the hold on Changsha.

The Chinese are also apparently abandoning Hengchow as well as force levels have dropped. IHQ suspects the Generalisimo may be in the process of pulling his troops back through Luichow.

The final days of August 1942 have seen quite an intensification of action:
And this doesn't describe what's taking place at Canton island.
1st Changsha has fallen to Japanese forces and Hengchow appears to be the next base in China which will be taken by the Japanese....however Kweiyang would pocket a sizable number of Chinese troops away from Chungking.

Ground combat at Changsha

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 112527 troops, 612 guns, 76 vehicles, Assault Value = 1480

Defending force 41825 troops, 69 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 998
