I'm afraid not, mate. Unless I'm seriously wrong, I don't think that you can download it. You'll have to use Gamers Gate, an option that I won't use.

If you don't want to use Gamers Gate, then you are forced to wait until the end of June, because then, Paradox will have UFO:ET in stores.

It'll only be released through Matrix's download service in the US... Doesn't seem to be Matrix's fault, but it's still spectacularly annoying...[:@]

Problem is that you have to install their software on your computer to download games from them, AND they put a limit on the number of times you can install the software you've bought with your own money. You basically rent your games from them, rather than buying...

So, the alternative would be to wait for the boxed version?

I'm going to wait on the Starforce answer, I bought EU3 retail and there's no CP at all.Just a serial number that you enter at the Paradox forums so you can get tech support.I'm hoping it's the same thing here, otherwise it's no deal.

You can go into your device manager to see if you have SF installed. I believe it has been confirmed that the retail package does have SF included.

Yeah, I know how to check for it,I was a victim of SH3,there's just no way I'm having that crap on my computer again, it fritzed my old cd burner.I'll have to wait until there's a [one of those things] for it then.If only I could buy from Matrix...

I'd just like to point out that this is a load of bullshit. Yes you need their software to download the games, however their software just downloads the installer, which you can then use on any computer to install the game along with the cd key they provide you without their software. You also get unlimited re-downloads, there is no limit whatsoever. I've bought Sword of the Stars, Europa Universalis 3 , UFO:Afterlight and Penumbra:Overture from them and this has been the case with all of them.

I have just purchased UFO from Gamersgate and I am downloading now.  So far, there does not appear to be serial number (at least no serial is listed) and the game was $10 cheaper (US$29.95) than the Matrix version I think, although I would still have preferred to purchase from Matrix (becasue I like to support the company).

I can't comment yet on the requirement of an Internet connection although their general FAQ indicates that one is required.  I have purchased Take Command: 2nd Manasas from them previously which did not have a serial number and does not require an Internet connection to install or run so it looks like they do change this on game by game basis.

I will report back on the Gamergate requirements when I have it installed.

Cheers

I'd like to chime in as well and say that I've used GamersGate with numerous games since they exist and I never had a problem. They just use a simple downloader and while it *may* be that you need internet connection to run it the first time for some of their games, all other rumours are definitely false. There is no limit on the number of downloads and you can easily save the installer files once you got them. Basically, it's similar to Stardock Central (for those of you who know it) regarding how it works and what kind of protection you can expect.

I'm downloading UFO right now and while I rather would have bought it from Matrix games to support you guys, I admit I'm also happy with only paying 29.99 (incl. VAT!).

UPDATE: It downloaded fine and it works. It didn't try to connect to the internet during the first launch, so I assume it doesn't even need to be activated.

There's no Starforce. Reported in the official forum, by way of the Paradox Plaza forum.

I'd love to have got the game from Matrix, but as I'm in Australia I've had to go with Gamers Gate. No problems, just not the great service you get over here. [:)]

Agreed - You neeed to have an internet connection for the initial download but after that you are OK to play whilst offline.

I think there is a limit - they don't say what it is but if you break it they they cancel your account, HOWEVER it looks like its preety easy to reactiviate it if you contact them and can explain the reason for all the downloads

How do you do this? The only game i downloaded from them there were no install files - it installed the game automatically.

Personally i also view it as renting the game as i have no install file of my own - though hopefully Sti can sort me out on this :)

thanks

It's only a limit regarding how many times you can download *within a certain time*. So unless you want to reinstall every 5 minutes or so, there is no problem.
The files you download are stored in a folder (click "configure" to check which one) and stay there, so you can back them up after installing.

Talking too much about GamersGate on the Matrix forum seems disrespectful to me, though, so I'll stop here for good. It's not my job to convince people to buy stuff at GamersGate, after all. ;)

Edit: Yes, I know that they are not competitors when it comes to UFO-ET, but first of all there may be games where they compete for customers (Birth of America, e.g.?) and secondly stuff about GamersGate should be discussed at their forum, not this one.

In this case,It's not so much wanting to buy from GG but if you're not in North America it's more a case of having to [:D]
