Two crashes so far with this game

Post by Paladin1 »

I've had two crashes in the last hour that I've tried to play UFO: ET. Both crashes occurred in tactical combat. One occurred during the middle of combat and the other occurred right at the start. As far as I can tell, the two crashes had nothing in common. I did edit the ini file to up my resolution to 1280 by 1024. My drivers are not up to date for my video card but they less than 3 months old. My PCs specs are:

Core 2 Duo 6400
Radeon X1950 Pro
2 GB Ram

I have a suspicion that it might be Xfire or some other utility causing my problem. Or it doesn't like dual core processors. I'll play around with it more and see what I can figure out.

Paladin,

Try disabling AA in-game if you have it. I have an ATI Radeon X1600, so who knows. It solved my problems right away.

Yeah I read your post and I did that but it just crashed again. I looked at the exception generated by windows and mmswitch.ax was listed. Its a codec file and I remember having a similar problem with Oblivion crashing because of another codec. I'm gonna rename that file and see if that helps like it did with Oblivion.

I played through a mission and part of another without a crash so maybe that did it.  I have to hit the rack now but I'll try it later today to make it sure that fixed it.

It is most probably caused by that codec. I have Core 2 6400
and Radeon X1950 Pro too and it works ok.

Paladin,

Let us know if removing that codec keeps you crash-free. If so, we'll add it to our FAQ.

Two hours crash free so far.  Guess the codec was the culprit. I'll post if I have any more crashes.
