Verify - Kneeling

Post by jureidinim »

Hi to all..

Just got the game and liking it so far. Question though - what exactly is the benefit of kneeling? I see no way of going totally prone - only kneeling.

I know in the original XCOM series and even the UFO:AS/AL games, kneeling gives you a slight defense benefit and accuracy benefit. I see no accuracy improvement here and have no idea if my troopers are harder to hit while kneeling.

Can anyone confirm this?

On a related note - is there any "stealth" in this game? Or are all missions a "kill them all" type?

I see an accuracy benefit when kneeling, so I assume it's the same as in the original.

Hmm.. will check again then. I was looking at the value after the "crosshairs" symbol (shows accuracy of unit) before and after the kneel and it didn't change.

For defense purposes, is it just the trooper stat (can't remember which one now) that affects this? I notice trees block line of fire, but do they also give partial defense bonuses?

Sorry for all the questions - just not seeing the answers in the manual. As the early game is tough (alien weaponary hurts!!), knowledge of what can be done to maximize your troops defense/accuracy would really help.

That's just the base value. If you check the accuracy by actually clicking the weapon and going to shoot a target, you'll see a bonus from kneeling vs. standing in the accuracy values listed there for the different shot types. As far as I've seen, terrain works about how you described - it can provide partial hard cover (blocking shots) and also reduce accuracy if there's a lot in the way.

Just to support the notion of accuracy with kneeling: my trooper, while standing and using a rocket launcher, has a 43% chance of hitting the Alien, but he has a 56% chance once he kneels down. Not a bad way to expend 3 APs.......

Sounds like a 30% bonus (i.e., X*1.3). Neat! It used to be 15% in X-COM.

Thanks! [;)]

I didn't check the percentage chance to hit - so that's where i need to look.

Glad to hear cover helps not only for complete blocking but also gives partial cover bonus as well.

Wished this stuff was explained better in the manual.
