I am playing a game on normal where I am doing ok.

4 Interceptors all with Laser Tech and I can take Cruisers easy enough.

Havent lost anyone and my troops all have Beekeepers (Heavy lasers are the business !!!!!)

I have built an Advanced Lab and researched everything so far but it wont let me research Plasma Tech its sorta greyed out and even my advanced lab wont research it is there something I am missing ?

Cant help u directly.
Im at a point in the game, where i have nothing to research. My Plasma is greyed out too and i have advanced labs too and those are the only projects i have.
I suspect next step is to capture commanders, but i havent seen any yet so i cant be sure. Will let u know if i find out more and plz let me knwo if u find out some thing.

To get the plasma tech you need to capture a Vipron commander, the Viprons are the snake guys and the commander is green instead of brown. Alien base missions usually contains atleast on commander.

needless to say, they should also be a lot tuffer then the normal types
 
in my one base attack, I had a lava pop up, my good guy, nailed him with 2 bursts of rifle fire, and my APV hit it with a cannon round
 
it took down my trooper, so my APV fired a rocket into it, and it then took out my APV
 
then I think it bled to death
 
but in those Bases, it can be HARD to see if the color is the same

In my experience, commanders can be found in any UFO of cruiser grade or above, in alien bases, and on alien terror missions. I haven't seen any while retaking alien bases yet, so either they don't show up, or they're hilariously unlucky and keep running into my reaction-fire.

Now, a question. Has anyone run across a Chaser commander? I've seen commanders for Vipons and the...race that comes after them that I won't spoilerize, b ut I haven't been able to discern a difference between one Chaser and the next. They're also stupidly resistant to stun gas. >.<
